IMPROVEMENT IN LETTER-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,954, dated November 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONGE DE-METS, of the city of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Street Post-Office Letter-Boxes, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects oflrwen-tion.
My invention relates to the enlargement of the boxes and separation of them into receptacles for letters and printed matter, respectively; the object being to give additional security and symmetry, as well as to supply a receptacle for printed and bulky matter, now totally wanting.
Description of theAceompanying Drawing.
General Description.
A is a granite block for a foundation, to be inserted in the ground to a suflicient depth, and project above the surface by its curved portion only. B is the body of the box, of cast iron, of a suitable height and size at once for the public in front and for the carrier in the rear, marked Letter-Box. (J is a swinging door-with suitable lock, admitting the carrier into the main body of the box and the receptacle for letters. D is a door sliding downward, admitting the carrier into the smaller receptacle for newspapers. E is a street-lamp, to be superimposed, if desirable. F is the opening for receiving letters, closed by a door opening inward, hinged at the top, and provided with a spring. G is a corresponding opening for newspapers and bulky matters. H is a plate, which may indicate the hours when the-mails are collected, or simply be marked U. S. Mail.
I claimas my inventionp 1. A letter-box provided with two orifices, one adapted for the reception of letters and the other for larger packages, such communicating with distinct compartments, substantially as described.
2. The case B having an opening, F, and door 0, interior box and its closing door D, and orifice G, said parts being combined and arranged substantially as described.
