UNITED STATES PATENT GEORGE H. COMER, OF INDIANA, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FURROW-STAFFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,952, dated November 12, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. OOMER, of Indiana, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furrow-Stafl' for Millstones, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved furrow-staff; Fig. 2, an end elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and practical instrument for determining the depth of furrows in millstones, so as to insure their equal depth throughout. The invention consists in the arrangement of a sort of sled, carrying a vertically-adjustable furlongitudinal bars, a a, and of the cross-bars O V O, as shown. The bars a a are at the sides of and parallel with the furrow-staff A. The latter can be adjusted up or down at will and fastened in suitable position by wedges b 1), screws, or other devices.
In use the staff is set as far down as necessary to reach the bottom of the furrow is then painted at the bottom, and slid along the furrow, leaving paint on the parts that are too high. At these places the furrow is redressed and the staff moved along again, until the requisite depth is found to have been reached. By my furrow-staff all the furrows can be kept at the same depth, and, at the same time, true with the face of the stone, making more flour, and of a higher grade, from a given quantity of wheat. v
Having thus described my invention,.l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The adjustable furrow-staif A, fastened at
