STOVE ATTACHMENT.
Specification 0! Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 3, 1920.
Application filed December 26, 1917. Serial No. 208,817.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LO'ITIE H. NVORTH- INGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pendleton, in the county of Unlatilla and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to improvements in stove attachments and it is the dominant object of the invention to provide a guard for the fuel control valve handles of liquid or gaseous fuel burning stoves whereby tampering therewith by children or the accidental turning of the same to open positions will be prevented.
Among other aims and objects of the invention may be recited, the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction sim ple, the cost of production small, and efiiciency and operation high.
he improvements in the details and ar rangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific descrip tion hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section through the guard and a portion of a gas stove, and,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the guard.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, S, represents a portion of the frame of a liquid or gaseous fuel burning stove to which my improved guard attachment is applied, the usual valves being operatively associated with the fuel supply pipe 1 of the said stove, the handles of these valves being indicated by the numeral 2. 1
The improved guard comprises a plurality of angular brackets generally indicated by the numeral 3, certain of the ends of which are bolted to the front portion of the stove frame asat 4 and have sheet metal sheathing 41' to the same as at 5. In this connection, it is to be noted that the angular'brackets 3 are arranged thereover and riveted secured to the longitudinally disposed fuel supplying pipe of the stove S by supple- -n1ental brackets or clamps 6, which clamps are curved and arranged over the said fuel supplying pipe and secured to the angular brackets by bolts 7 or like fastening devices.
Angle arms 8 are provided and have certain of their ends hingedly connected as at 9 to the free ends of the brackets 3, the angle arms, in turn, being covered by metal sheathing 10 which is riveted to the same as at 11 and has one end thereof rolled upon itself to provide a beading 12,the purpose of which will be presently apparent. It may be here noted, that the guard formed by the arrangement of the angle arms 8 and the sheathing 10 is of a size and shape to fully inclose the handles 2 of the fuel control valves.
As means for releasably securing the hinged guard in position over the handles 2, spring catches 13 are employed and are secured to the front portion of the stove frame by rivets 14 and the bolts 4. These catches are so positioned as to automatically engage the beading formed upon the upper end of the sheathing 10. Thus, when the hinged guard is swung into guarding or operative position, the catches 13 will serve as means for preventing undue movement of the same to inoperative or non-guarding position. However, by merely lifting the free ends of the catches 13, the same may be disengaged from the bead 12 and the hinged guard may be then swung to non-guarding or inoperative position. Obviously, any number of spring catches may be employed, such as conditions or preference may dictate.
My improved guard affords means for preventing tampering with the fuel control valves of liquid or gaseous fuel burning stoves by children and also, prevents accidental turning of the valves to open position. The device due to its exceedingly simple construction can be readily attached to practically any form of stove without material alteration thereto.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim The combination with a gas stove having 110 I a valved fuel supply pipe disposed horizon-- tally outside of the same, of angular ets secured to the stove and to the brackipe, a
sheathing carried b the brackets to molose 5 the pipe and inclu ing a hinged front and top the top I gitiidinal edge,
being formed with a rolled lonand resilient catches mounted on the brackets to engage the rolled edge and having upwardly and outwardly inclined outer handle extremities above the top. 4
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto.
LOTTIE H. WORTHINGTQN.
