UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES D. MYERS, OF WARE, MASSAdI-IUSETTS, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO EDWARD K. LATHROP, 0F SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
SOAP-DISPENSING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vare, in the county of Hampshire and State of 'l\'lassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soap-Dispensing Apparatus, of which the following is a This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a soap dispensing apparatus, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a soap container which is.
provided with means for ejecting the soap therefrom in small quantities as the same is used.
Another object of the invention is to provide a soap dispensing apparatus of this character which is adapted to receive in the soap container either hard soap or soap paste, and which is provided with means where hard soap is used for shaving the same as it is ejected throughthe lower end so that only small flakes will be dispensed. \Vhere soap paste is used, the shaving member is dispensed with, and the paste is ejected from the container as needed.
A further ob ect of the invention is te provide a device of this character which is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efiicient in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the container in section, 4 i.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the device,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The numeral 1 designates a substantially U-shaped supporting member which is adapted to have its base portion secured to a wall or like support, and which has its upper and lower arms designated by the numerals 2 and 3 adapted to receive a soap container 4. between the ends thereof, said Specification or Letters Patent.

container being preferably cylindrical in shape and open ended, and also made of glass. Thelower arm 3 is provided with an opening the'rethrough that alines with the open lower end of the soap container and the upper arm 2 is provided with a hingedly connected outer extremity 5 adapted to-fit down over the open upper end of the container so that the same may be easily rean opening in the forward portion of the arm 2. This plunger rod 8 has a rack 9 formed on one face thereof, and the said rod is provided with an enlarged head 10 whereby the same may be forced through the container to move the plunger 7 to eject soap through the open lower end of said container. The opening through the arm 2 in which the rod 8 is positioned is larger than said rod, and a spring 11 is carried by theforward portion of the arm and bears against one face of said rod to throw the opposite face outwardly, upon which the rack 9 is positioned, against the adjacent edge thereof. Positioned on said arm adjacent said opposite edge is a spring pressed locking pawl 12 that is adapted for normal engagement with the rack 9 to hold the ejector in various forward adjusted positions i Pivotally connected with the lower surface of the lower arm 3 of the support 1 is a swinging arm 13 that has a handle 14.- formed on the outer end thereof. and movement of the arm across the lower face of the supporting arm 3 is guided by an arouate guiding member 15'. said .arm having a coil spring 16 connected therewith and adapted to hold it in normal position away from beneath the lower end of the container as isclearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The arm 13 is provided with a slot 17 therein, one edge of said slot having an upwardly projecting knife edge 18 thereon whereby I will fall from the device in flakes.
In operation, when a cake of hard soap is placed in the container 4, it is obvious that upon downward movement of the plunger rod the plunger will bear against the upper face thereof, and force the soap through the lower end of the container. When moved in'this position upon grasping the handle 14: and moving the arm 13 across the lower end of said soap, the knife edge will shave some therefrom, and the flakes thus formed will drop through the slot 17. NVhen the arm 13 has been moved across the lower end of the soap, the spring 16 will beexpanded and upon releasing the handle 14, the spring will return the arm to normal position. When the projecting portion of the soap has been shaved, the plunger is once more forced down and more soap ejected from the container.
The spring pressed pawl that is cooperatively related with therack on the plunger rod, serves to hold the plunger in various forwardly adjusted positions, and prevents the return thereof. This serves to hold the soap projected from the container so as the projected-portion thereof may be readily shaved therefrom. The swinging extremity 6 on the upper arm 2 permits the container to be easily removed from the support so that the soap may be easily replenished. This device is equally applicable for use in dispensing soap which is in paste form, as the paste container is placed within the container or receptacle 4: and the soap is ejected therefrom in the usual manner. Where soap paste 1s used, the cutting or shaving means may be dispensed with, as it is not necessary in this case.
i From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes 'may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A device of the character described, comprising a substantially U-shaped supporting frame forming spaced parallel upper and lower rigid arms, the lower arm being formed with an opening, a cylinder forming a soap container open at opposite ends supported on the lower arm with its lower open end registering with the opening in said arm, a hinged extension on the upper arm for closing the upper open end of said container, a lunger working in the container and having' a rack slidable through the extension, and means for locking the rack to hold the plunger in adjusted position in the con tainer.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
CHARLES D. MYERS.
