Be it known that 1, PAUL W. FURSTEN- BERG, a citizen of Germany, (but having taken out his first papers with the intention of becoming'a citizen of the United States), residing in the city of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Advertising Device or the like, of which the following is aspecification.

his invention relates to the art of advertising, and is, more particularly, directed to a new article'of manufacture which may be used for advertising purposes, as a show card, for use in mailing, or in an oiiice or showroom, though the invention may be also employed by photographers as a picture holder or portfolio.

The object of the invention if'used as an advertising medium is to provide a device which may not only be readily forwarded through the mails, but which will, upon receipt, so arouse the curiosity of the addressee that he will give the article a second thought and peruse the same instead of immediately depositing the same in the waste-basket, as frequently occurs with advertising matter.

A i'urtherobject of the invention is to provide an article of this character which will allow of the housing of a picture or the like in protected position to preclude soiling or marring of the same durin use evice which will be highly artistic and pleasing in appearance.

Features of the invention other than those specified will be apparent from the hereinafter detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated diiierent practical embodiments of the invention, but the-constructions therein shown are to be understood as illustrative only, and not as defining the limits of the invention.

In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the invention is shown as particularly adapted for an advertising show card or calendar intended to he stood in a substantially upright position on a desk or table. In this embodiment of the invention, A designates a body portion provided with a central depression or recess B adapted to normally receive a flap or door C which is hinged or pivoted to the body portion A by hinges c. A icture or illustration of any desired descripti'on depending upon the goods to be advertised, occupies the base of the recess or depression B, and at least a portion of said picture is adapted to be viewed through one or a series of transparent panels I), Ihe panels I) arepreferably of glass, celluloid or some other form of transparent material, so that when the flap C is closed the picture may be readily viewed therethrough. The lower portion of the flap may be provided with a calendar or with suitable advertising matter, as desired.

The picture which is placed in the recessed portion B may extend throughout said portion, or may simply occupy that part thereof which may be observed through the panels D, and, in the latter case, the lower portion of the recess may be suitably printed to embody advertising matter of any desired form. In a like manner advertising matter may be positioned upon the inner face of the flap C to fill that portion thereof unoccupied by the panels. To allow of ready operation of the flap C, a lrnob or finger piece E is. preferably provided thereon as shown.

In lieu of the picture which is shown as positioned in the recessed'portion B, a number of catalogue sheets may be positioned therein as a pad, and the first sheet of the pad may be in the form of a picture adapted to be viewed through the transparent panels'D. v

In the construction of Fig. 3 the device is shown as particularly adapted for use as The structure disclosed is the same in many respects as described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2, except that in lieu of the advertising matter on the lower portion of the flap C, this portion of the flap is adapted to contain the name and address of an addressee, and thereabove a stamp may be applied so that the device may be used for mailing without necessitating the use of a separate folder, cover, or envelop. In this construction, the flap C 1s shown as made integral with the body portion A, but is adapted to be folded from open to closed positlom'and vice versa,along the dotted line C, as will be readily understood. The flap C may be maintained closed during transit by pasting small stickers over its free edge and the adjacent edge ofthe body portion, or may be more readily sealed by a fastener e which extends through the flap and through the body port on, and is adapted to be spread rearwardly. thereof to hold the flap in closed position. The fastener e, in practice, appears like the knob of the door 0, and is in full artistic harmony with the remainder of the article.

In Fig. 5 a further modified form of the invention is shown wherein the body portion and paneled flap may partake of either of the forms of Figs. 1 or 3, but, in addition to these structures a second flap 1 is provided which is adapted to be folded along the line f to overlie the entire front of the body portion and flap 0. This type of article is particularly adapted for use by photographers as a portrait folder or ortfolio, is very artistic and has the further advantage of absolutely sealing a portrait positioned in the recessed portion B against dust.

The device of this invention may be made from any suitable material which is preferably formed from cardboard or papier mach, whereby it'is inexpensive, highly artistic, and possesses marked utility as an adw vertising medium, show card, a cover for. catalogues or a folder in general.

Havlng thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. As a new article of manufacture, an advertising device having a body portion provided in one of its faces with a depres-' sion adapted to receive printed and pictorial matter, a flap pivotally associated with the body portion "and normally occupying the depression therein, and a transparent panel forming a portion of said flap and through which. only a part of the matter delineated on the depressed portion may be observed, said flap being pivotal into open position to allow of the viewing of such matter.

2. As a new article of manufacture, an advertising device embodying a body portion having'a'depressi'on in one of its faces adapted to receive printed or pictorial matter, a flap plvotally associated with the body portion and adapted to normally partake of a closed position wherein-it occupies the depression of the body portion said flap be-' mg partially cut away, whereby only a, portion of the printed matter adapted to be deon one face of which cut away portion,

and normally occupying the recess thereof with its exposed face flush with the corre-. sponding face of the body portion, said flap having a part thereof cut away to allow of the viewing of a part of the printed or pictorial matter, when the flap is closed,

and means for normally maintaining the'fiap in closed position.

4. As a new article of manufacture, an advertising device having a bodyportion provided with a depression in one face thereof, on the base of which depression printed or pictorial matter is adapted to be delineated, a flap pivoted at one of its edges .to one edge of the depression and adapted to be normally folded into a position within the depression, said flap having a cut away portion through which a portion of the printed or pictorial matter may be viewed when the flap is closed, and a second flap pivoted along one of the edges of the body portion and adapted to be folded to overlie the other flap when the latter is in closed position.

5. As a new article of manufacture, an advertising device having a body portion matter is adapted to flap pivoted to the body portion and adapted to be folded to closed position to overlie the ,printed or pictorial matter, said flap being partially cut away to allow of the viewing of only a part of the printed or pictorial matter through the cut away portion, when the flap is in closed position.

6. As a new article of manufacture, an advertising. device having onone face of which printed or matter is'ad-apted to be delineat and a flap) pivoted to the body portion and adapted to e folded to closed position to overlie the printed or pictorial matter, said flap being partially cut away to allow of only a part of the/printed or pictorial matter through the cut away portion, when the fl-a'p is in closed position, and a second flap pivoted to the body portion and adapted 2o overlie the first flap when in closed posiion.
