My invention relates to resilient recoil padsfor gun stocks and an object is to pro vide a pad of this character which may be easily attached and detached for use on army machine guns, sporting rifles and shot In the use of guns and rifles, espesuch as are employed for army purposes, there is a great deal of recoil, whichresults in much bruising and injury to the shoulder of the soldier or user, so that frequently the shoulder becomes sov sore that it is difficult to aim and fire accurately. A resilient recoil pad for application to the butt of the gun is, therefore, extremely desirable. Such a pad, however, will not bear the rough usage incident to handling and drilling with thejlg1 1 g. invention provides means whereby a recoil pad may be easily and quickly applied to the gun when the same is to be used for firing the gun, and detached at other times, leaving the usual metallic butt plate exposed.

The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and the novel ns. cially features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

As shown in the drawings, the end of the gun stock 10 is provided with a metallic butt plate 12. This plate may be an army shown in Figs. 3 and 4 in which there is a gate 14 for admission to the thong case chamber, the gate having a notched finger piece 16 for use in opening the gate. The butt plate 12 is secured to the gun stock by

18 and 20, the screw 20 extending through an outstanding arm 22 with Which'the butt plate is provided. When the gun is being in use for drilling, the butt plate 12 will alone be employed, and this being of metal and closely fitting the end of the gun stock will bear the hard usage of drilling and handling.

The attachment for providing a resilient recoil pad comprises a piece 24 of substantially rigid material such as hard rubber to which is secured a pad member 26 of resilient material such as sponge rubber, the latter being shaped on the rear side to fit the shoulder by concaving it at 27. The pad 26 may be provided with corrugations 28 on its side which is adjacent the member 24, and the latter is formed with a central carried or' shipped, and when aperture 30. The

24 and 26 are covered with leather 32 and to the forward side of the piece 24, near one end thereof, is secured a metallic plate 34 carrying an outstanding stud 36 having an elongated head which is adapted to cooperate with an elongated slot 38 provided for this purpose in the butt plate. To the other end of the piece 24 is secured an outstanding metallic arm 40 containing an opening or recess 42 adapted to cooperate with a projection such as the head of the screw 20 on the gun stock. When the recoil pad is in the position shown in Fig. 2 the head of the stud 36 may be readily inserted through the elongated slot 38, whereupon by turning the pad member the latter will be held upon the gun stock. When the pad member reaches an upright position the opening or recess 42 will be engaged by the head. of the screw 20 or other projection on the gun stock, and the pad will be held firmly in place since the arm 40 is slightly resilient.

It will be apparent that the recoil pad member maybe quickly and easily attached to and detached from the butt of the gun by turning the member through substanrecoil pad attachment also permits the use of any form of door for opening through the butt plate into a chamber or chambers formed in the body of the gun stock. My resilient recoil pad is compact and may be easily carried in a coat pocket or a compartment of the cartridge belt. Some of the advantagesof my device may be summed up as follows:

1. It positively eliminates the shock of the recoil.

2. It increases the efliciency of the marksman. i

3. It does away with flinching.

4. It eliminates sore or bruised shoulders.

5. Itconduces to accurate aim.

6, It fits the shoulder with absolute comfort.

I claim:

1. A resilient recoil pad for gun stocks comprising, a member of resilient material for engagement with the shoulder, a stud carried by said member, said stud having an elongated head for cooperation with an turning the same through substantially.

2. A resilient recoil pad for gun stocks comprising a member of substantially rigid material,- a member of yielding material secured to said rigid member, a stud carried by said rigid member, said stud having an elongated head for cooperation with an elongated slot in the butt ,plate whereby said members may be attached and detached by turning the same through substantially ninety degrees and an arm extending forwardly from said rigid member, said arm having a recess for engagement by a projection on the gun stock.
