Description

C'. W. WILLIAMS. Improvement in Coal-Chutes. No. 132,884. Patented Nov.5,1872.
. ,mu-wam-umoofiAPH/ccowxmssams PROCESS.) v
UNITED STATES CORNELIUS W. WILLIAMS, OF PORT JEBVIS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-CHUTES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,884, dated November 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OoRNELrUs W. WIL- LIAMS, of the town of Port Jervis, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Screening and Spouting Attachment to Goal- Pockets, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists of a guard hinged a little below the lower end of spout to prevent the coal from shooting over the side of the wagon, and in arranging beneath arailroad track an apparatus whose essential parts are constructed, arranged, and combined as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a sectional elevation of a pocket with my improved screening and spouting attachment applied to it, the spout being turned down to conduct the coal into the wagon Fig. 2 is a similar elevation with the spout folded up to allow the wagon to be properly placed alongside; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the said pockets and attachments. v
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts. i
A is the pocket, which is to be elevated sufficiently for spouting from it into a wagon. B is the upper portion of the spout permanently fixed to the pocket; and O is the lower portion hinged to B at D, so as to fold up on B out of the way, as represented in Fig. 2, so that a wagon can be drawn close alongside without being obstructed, as it would'in attempting to drive under a permanently-fixed spout, arranged low enough for discharging into a wagon properly. E is the cross-bar, suspended in front of the lower end of the spout for the coal to strike against, and be thereby turned directly downward to prevent it from shooting over the side of the wagon. Said bar is hinged to the sides of the spout, which project a little beyond the end of the bottom, so that it can be raised to free the coal that may clog in the space or to prevent clogging. F represents a series of grate-bars, which I propose to arrange at the bottom of the part B of the spout as shown, to screen the coal as it flows from the pocket to the wagon. This screen is arranged so high up that the matters falling from it will not fall into the wagon when loading. G is a gate for opening to let the coal escape from the pocket to the wagon. These pockets are filled from cars run along the rails H above them.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The hinged guard E, arranged on end of spout, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of bin A having inclined bottom, the sliding gate Gr at the side of bin, and the spout B having sieve F, folding extension O, and hinged guard E, all arranged under a railroad track, H H, as and for the purpose described. I
/ CORNELIUS WV. XVILLIAMS.
