DUMP-BODY HOIST.
Application filed July 3, 1819.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, IVALTER C. KERN and WILLIAM YOUNG, both citizens of the United States, and residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-Body Hoists, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hoists for raising and lowering the dump bodies of trucks, trailers and wagons and in its generic nature the invention has for its object to provide an apparatus which will be positive in its operation, strong and durable in its construction and which will effectively serve its intended purposes. In its more subordinate nature, the invention comprises a standard or support in which there is vertically slidable a carriage to which the end of the dump body to be elevated is connected, there being a cable and pulley mechanism provided for sustaining the elevator carriage in its different positions of elevation and there being further provided a ratchet and pawl mechanism for effecting the upward movement of the elevator carriage, means being provided for automatically disconnecting the pawl from the ratchet at the extremity of the upward movement of the carriage and restoring the pawl to engagement with the ratchet after the carriage has been again lowered, the lowering of the carriage being controlled by the pulley and cable devices.
In its more detail nature, the invention includes those novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the invention in use.

In the drawings, in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 represents the frame of the vehicle and 2 the tiltable dump body while 3 indicates the hoist which constitutes our invention. The hoist is composed of a pair of channel irons 33, secured at their base to the chassis of the vehicle in any desired and effective way and connected together at their tops by a cross bar 9 which carries an idler pulley 10 over which the sustaining cable 11 passes.
4 is the elevator carriage which may be grooved to fit over the longitudinal edges of the channel beams 3 (see Fig. 5) and be guided thereby, or the arrangement shown in Fig. 9 may be employed. The carriage includes a bracket 5 and supports a cross bolt 6 on which the lifting and holding pawls 7 and 8 respectively are mounted.
The carriage 4 may be provided with eyes 12 and 15 to which the ends of the cable 11 are connected, the cable 11 being passed around the'drum 13 which is mounted on the shaft 14 that is in turn suitably journaled in bearings on the chassis of the vehicle, a crank 18 being provided by which the shaft 14 may be manipulated, there being also provided a ratchet 16 and pawl 17 to prevent backward motion of the shaft 14 as the carriage 4 is being elevated.
19 designates a fixed ratchet mounted in one of the channel beams 3 and having a throw-out projection 27 for a purpose presently explained. 20 designates the operating or movable ratchet which isalso mounted in the channel beam adjacent to the ratchet 19 and the ratchet 20 may be held for vertical movement by pin and slot arrangements 22-21, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings. The ratchet 20 may be of T shape in cross section and interengaging the ratchet 19 and a bar 3* secured to the channel member 3. as shown in Fig. 9' The le r 1.1. 1 of the atche 2 rests on a bell crank lever 23 which is fulcrumed at 24 and linked at 25 to the operating lever 26. The ratchet 20 is also provided with a throw-out projection 27, the throw-out proje;tions 27 of the ratchets 19 and 20 serving tothrow the pawls 7 and 8 beyond the dead center so that when the carriage 4- is elevated to its maximum height the pawls 7 and 8 will be disengaged from the ratchets and fall over, as shown in dotted lines, thus leaving the carriage 4 free to be lowered again by means of the handle 18, the pawl 17 being disengaged from the ratchet 16 when it is desired to lower the carriage 1. 29 is a projection designed to engage the pawls 7 and 8 to restore them into engagement with the ratchets when the carriage approaches its lowermost position.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the pawls 7 and 8 are hanging pawls, that is, the weight of the carriage 1 hangsby the pawls on the ratchets. If desired, an arrangement of ratchets such as diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 7 may beemployed in which the ratchet engaging end of the pawl 7 a is below the pivotal axis and thus the weight of the carriage rests downwardly on the pawl and ratchet rather than hanging from above on the same as in the first form. Instead of employing the bell crank 23, lever 26 and link 25, the lever 26 may have its action compounded through rocking levers 25 23, as shown in Fig. 6, or. other modifications of the invention, as will readily occur to the skilled mechanic, may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
30 designates an eye on the bracket 5 which is connected by a cable or rod 31 to the bracket member 32 of the dump body 2 or any other suitable connection between the dump body and the carriage 4. may be employed whereby as the operator I'OCks the lever 26 (the carriage 1 being in the lowermost, position with the body 2 down, as shown.v in dotted lines in Fig. 1) he causes the ratchet20 to be raised and lowered by a succession of movements, the weight of the ratchet being ordinarily sufiicient to cause it to drop to its lowermost position after being elevated by the operation of the lever 26. As they ratchet 20 is rocked up and down to raise the carriage 4, the holding pawl 8 will engage its ratchet 19 during the time the ratchet 20 is falling and thus hold the carriages in its elevated positions. Having elevated the tank body 2 sufliciently to dump the contents, the operator, by manipulating the crank 18 a few times more, will cause the pawls 7 and 8 to be engaged by the throw-out projections 27 and thus tilt the pawls 7 and 8 sufficiently to cause the center of gravity to fall to the right of the vertical axis of the bolt 6 in Fig. 2 (see dotted lines at the upper portion of that figure) and thereby cause the pawls to rock out of engagement with the ratchets. The operator then releases the pawl 17, while grasping the handle of the crank 18 and lowers carriage 4. As tne carriage reaches its lowermost position, the projection 29 will restore the pawls to their ratchet engaging position and the parts will be ready for further operation when desired.
Instead of the levers 23, 25 and 26 arranged as shown in Fig. 2, the mechanism employed in Fig. 10 may be used. By reference to that figure it will be seen that to the lower end of the ratchet is connected a link 20 with an articulated joint, link 20 having a pin 20 to enter the slot 23 of the heel of the lever 23, the lever 23 being linked at 25 to the arm 26 of a gear segment 26 which is mounted on a stub shaft 26 journaled in suitable bearings (not shown) and meshing with a pinion 26 on a crank shaft 26 to the end of which a crank lever 26 may be attached so that by rocking the crank lever the necessary motion will be imparted to the lever 23 to effect the required reciprocations of the ratchet 20.
Instead of directly connecting the body 2 to the carriage 4, as shown in Fig. 1, an evener bar 33 is provided which is connected by the cable 31 to the dump body and which is itself sustained by cables 34 which pass over sheaves 35 and have their ends fastened in any suitable manner (not shown) to the frame of the vehicle so as to anchor the said ends. The sheave 35 are carried by an evener bar 36 which is secured to the carriage 4, as indicated, so as the carriage 4 is raised, the body 2 will be elevated a greater distance than the elevation of the carriage 4, due to the pulley and cable connections, etc.
Changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art and we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise details of construction shown and described.
l Vhat we claim is 1. A dump body hoist comprising a standard having guides, a carriage verticall movable on said guides, a pulley and cable mechanism for loweringsaid carriage, and a ratchet and pawl device for raising said carriage, said carriage being adapted to be connected with the dump body to raise and lower the same.
In apparatus of the class described, the combination with the vehicle, the dump body pivoted thereon, of a hoist mounted on the vehicle and comprising vertical standards, a carriage mounted on said standards for vertical movement, pulley'and cable mechanism by which said carriage may be raised and lowered, a bank check pawl and ratchet mechanism cooperative with said pulley and cable mechanism, a ratchet and pawl device for raising said carriage and a connection between said carriage and dump body.
3. A dump body hoist comprising a standard having guides, a carriage vertically movable on said guides, a pulley and cable mechanism for lowering said carriage, and a ratchet and pawl device for raising said carriage, said carriage being adapted to be connected with the dump body to raise and lower the same, said ratchet and pawl mechanism comprising a stationary ratchet cooprating with said standard, a pawl on the carriage cooperating with said stationary ratchet, a reciprocable ratchet, another pawl on said carriage cooperative with said reciprocable ratchet and means for reciprocating said reciprocable ratchet.
4. In apparatus of the class described, the combination with themehicle, the dump body pivoted thereon, of a hoist mounted on the vehicle and comprising vertical standards, a carriage mounted on said standards for vertical movement, pulley and cable mechanism by which said carriage may be raised and lowered, a back check pawl and ratchet mechanism cooperative with said pulley and cable mechanism, a ratchet and pawl device for raising said carriage, a connection be tween said carriage and the dump body, said ratchet and pawl mechanism comprising a stationary ratchet cooperating with said standard, a pawl on the carriage cooperating with said stationary ratchet, a reciprocable ratchet and another pawl on said carriage cooperative with said reciprocable ratchet, and means for reciprocating said reciprocable ratchet.
5. A dump body comprising a standard having guides, a carriage vertically movable on said guides, a pulley and cable mechanism for lowering said carriage, a ratchet and pawl device for raising said carriage, said carriage being adapted to be connected with the dump body to raise and lower the same, said pawl and ratchet me hanism comprising ratchets carried by the standard, pawls carried by said carriage, means for operating said ratchet and pawl mechanism to raise the carriage, and means for disconnecting the pawls from the ratchets after the carriage has been raised.
6. In apparatus of the class described, the combination with the vehicle, the dump body pivoted thereon, of a hoist mounted on the vehicle and comprising vertical standards, a carriage mounted on said standards for vertical movement, pulley and cable mechanism by which said carriage may be raised and lowered, a back check pawl and ratchet mechanism cooperative with said pulley and cable mechanism, ratchet and pawl device for raising said carriage, a connection between said carriage and dump body, said pawl and ratchet mechanism comprising ratchets carried by the standard, pawls carried. by said carriage, means for operating said ratchet and pawl mechanism to raise the carriage, and means for disconnecting the pawls from the ratchets after the carriage has been raised.
7. A dump body comprising a standard having guides, a carriage vertically movable on said guides, a pulley and cable mechanism. for lowering said carriage, a ratchet and pawl device for raising said carriage, said carriage being adapted to be connected with the dump body to raise and lower the same, said pawl and ratchet mechanism com prising ratchets carried by the standard, pawls carried by said carriage, means for operating said ratchet and pawl mechanism to raise the carriage, means for disconnecting the pawls from the ratchets after the carriage has been raised, and means for restoring the pawls into engagement with the ratchets when the carriage has been lowered.
In apparatus of the class described, the combination with the vehicle, the dump body pivoted thereon, of a hoist mounted on the vehicle and comprising vertical standards, a carriage mounted on said standards for vertical movement, pulley and cable mechanism by which said carriage may be raised and lowered, a back check pawl and ratchet mechanism cooperative with said pulley and cable mechanism, a ratchet and pawl device for raising said carriage, a connection between said carriage and dump body, said pawl and ratchet mechanism comprising ratchets carried by the standard, pawls carried by said carriage, means for operating said ratchet and pawl mechanism to raise the carriage, means for disconnecting the pawls from the ratchets after the carriage has been raised, and means for restoring the pawls into engagement with the ratchets when the carriage has been lowered.
9. A dump body hoist comprising a pair of channel irons forming a standard, a carriage vertically slidably guided between said irons, a pulley and cable mechanism connected with said carriage, a fixed ratchet and a movable ratchet mounted in said standard, pawls mounted on said carriage cooperating with said ratchets for raising WALTER C.
