HATBAND.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented .13.11.27, 1920.
Application filed May 24, 1919. i Serial No. 299,451.
To all whom t may concern:
dc it `lF-.icwn that I, JUnit-s HENRI DE SI- soUn, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Vlashingtoin in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hatbands, yof which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to hat bands designed to perpetuate to the public a reminder of the services rendered by the wearer during the recent great Vorlds War.
rlhe object of the invention is to produce a hat band which will designate the general branch of service to which the wearer belongs-whether Army, Navy or Marine Corps, the kind and duration of such service, whether over-seas or service in this country, and also other special insignia, including corps and division marks.
i further object oi' the invention is to provide a hat band provided with certain service insignia on the band portion, said band portion having means for attaching thereto interchangeable bows displaying additional insignia thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hat band including a band portion containing certain of the insignia and a bow portion adapted to display or to interchangeably display, other insignia.
In one form, the hat band consists of a band portion of a particular insignia or coloring to indicate the Army, Navy or Marine branch of the service, together with other insignia or a band or bands of suitable coloring, indicating the duration and kind of service, whether home or foreign service, respectively. In addition, the bow portion of the hat band is adapted to bear the corps and division marks or any special service in that particular branch to which the wearer belongs. The bow portion displaying this insignia may be attached directly to the band portion, the bow may be detachable, or the bow may be provided with an attaching insignia member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings` Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hat provided with my improved band;
Fig. 2 is a side View of the band detached from the hat;
Fig. 3 atop view thereof, showing the usual manner of placing the attaching hooks;
Fig. 4 is a front view of the bow insignia member;
Fig. 5 is a side view thereof, the dotted lines indicating the 'manner' of folding it over the bow when attached thereto; and
Fig. 6 isa modification showing the bow as aseparate'piece and provided with lmeans for attachment to the band-in this type the bow bears the insignia directly thereon.
In the drawings, the band proper is of any suitable color, such as blue, for the Navy, :forestry green, for the Marine Corps, and khaki, for the Army. If desirable, these colors may be used in different shades to designate oiiicers and enlisted personnel, or different colors may be used for this purpose. 0n each band portion l there is provided one or more bands 2 of a suitable color, to indicate the period and kind of service, respectively. In the present instance, foreign or over-seas service may be indicated by gold or yellow and service in `this country, by silver or gray. The period oi2 service is indicated by the number of bands of contrasting color on the band portion proper. For instance, in the Army a light blue band may be displayed for less than six months service; a gold or silver band for siX months foreign or home service, and an additional gold or silver band for each additional six months. In the Navy, a gold or silver band may be displayed for the first three months service and an additional band for each years service thereafter.
The bow portion 3 of the hat band is peculiarly adapted to be used for designating more special insignia, such as the corps, division devices, see Fig. l, special branches of the particular branch of the service to which the wearer belongs, or any other mark which the wearer is entitled to wear. And these devices may be woven directly in the fabric of the bow or may be on members adapted to be attached to the bow The bow may be attached directly to the band proper or may be made detachable therefrom. One end of the band is provided with an attaching hook, while the other hook is placed vin the bow, as shown in Fig. 3. When the bow is detachable, as .in Fig. 6, both ends of the band are provlded with hooks, but
other locations for these hooks are contemplated. For instance, the hook may be on the bow as in Fig. 3.
Fig. 4 is a front view of one of these attaching members 5, provided with a particular insignia and two flaps 6 and 7, the ends of which are provided With hooks 8 for `attachment to the rear of the bow 3. Obviously, any convenient mode of attaching such members tothe bow may be used. As indicated in dotted lines, the flaps :told back over the bow 3 and are hooked in place.
Fig. 6 discloses a band portion proper provided with a removable bow 9, adapted to display a corps device, or other insignia. thereon. In this instance, the face of the band pro-per `is provided with one member 10, of the ordinary snap fastener, while the back of the bow kis provided with the other member 11 oi'such fastener. One or more of such fasteners may be used, or, in place thereof, any type of a detachable fastener is available.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a device of the class described, the combination of a band portion of suitable coloring to denote the branch of service, a suitable number of designating stripes thereon of appropriate color to indicate the period and place of service, and a bow provided with suitable service indicia.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a band portion oi' suitable coloring to denote the branch of service, and a bow displaying suitable insignia.
In testimony whereof, I aiiiX my signature.
JULES HENRI DE SIBOUR.
