To all 'whom it may concern:
vBe it known that I, l/VrLLIAM J. KOCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of lWisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tailstocks for Button-Blank-Sawing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the tail stocks of button blank machines.
The objects of the invention are to provide a lever operated plunger which will be as sensitive to the operators feel as is the present standard screw operated plunger or pusher; to provide a plunger actuatingdevice in the form of acam or eccentric actuated by a hand lever and engaging a disklike abutment connected with the rear end of the pusher or plunger; toprovide such an actuating device in the form of a circular eccentric adapted to be rocked in opposite directions so as yto produce a forward movement of the plunger or pusher in both rocking movements of the eccentricby its hand lever; to provide for the vertical ad justment of Vtheplunger or pusher so that the usual metal or wooden plug carried thereby may be accurately centered with respect to the tubular saw carried by the head stock; and fnallyto produce `a hand lever machine which will have `all of the advanf tages of the standard screwfeed machine, together with a capacity for a greater amount of work andv one in whichvthere is a greater responsiveness to they operators delicate sense of .touch or feel, which governs the operation of machines of this type;
These objects I accomplish by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: f

Babbitt linings 17, 17, through which the tubular plunger or pusher 18 slides. The plunger 18 has ya setfscrew 19 at its outer end to hold the plug20 in place.` The pusher or plunger 18 lis retracted 4by/an encircling spring 21, bearing at one end against the left hand bearing blocks andatl its opposite end bearing, against a collar v22 secured to the plunger by a set-screw,123; said collar having la depending arm 24 vprof vided with a roller25 bearing on the bar 13 so that the plungerf18 will not be rotated when the shell is brought up ,tothe saw, not shown.
Within the plunger 18 is the plug `adjuster 26 in the form of a tube having internal threads engagedb'y an adjusting screw 27, turning in the rear end of the ,plunger18. The adjusting screw 27 is held fromlongitudirialliiovement ...in one .directie-n brmeens of an annular shoulder 28 engaged bythe inner end of a threaded collar 29 screwed into the adjacent end of the tubular plunger 18 and from movement in the opposite. direction by means of a hand wheel 30 at the outer side of the collar 29.
AThe outer extremity of this end of the screw 27 is threaded and upon this threaded end is screwed an abutment in the form of a disk 31.
The right hand arm 2 of the base 1 is provided with a bracket 32, which projects outwardly and upwardly adjacent to the disk 31 and is there provided with transverse bearings 33, between which is the operating eccentric er cam 34, carried by the rock shaft 35 mounted in the said bearings 33 and provided with a handle or lever 36 extending to the opposite end of the tail stock within reach of the operator.
Power operated plungers have not proven successful in this art where so much depends upon the sense of feeling for good work, owing to the shells being all of different thicknesses, sizes, etc., so that the standard machine to-day is that having a screw actuated plunger to bring the shell up to the work. These screws, however, soon begin to wear and become loose so that it is diicult for the operator to feel with certainty just what the throw will be. Then, again, in a few years the wear on the screw is so great that new ones must be supplied, which necessitates a new plunger also. It is to avoid all these and other objections that I have designed my eccentric feed. It will be seen that these eecentrics may be readily replaced, are always in view, and that they may be supplied in different sizes to suit different operators. A great advantage of the eccentric feed lies in the factv that a blank may be cut in both throws. When the operator swings the lever to the right to bring the eccentric against. the disk to throw the plunger toward the saw a blank will be cut and the lever and cam will be carried to the position shown in dotted lines shown, Fig. 1, and then in swinging the lever in the reverse direction or its return movement a second blank will be cut; thusv double the amount of work may be performed bv the operator and that greatly to the benefit of the operator and the factory.
Then, again, the lever motion and the action of the cam in moving the plunger to the work is very easy and the spring always retracts the plunger instead of this having tobe done by the operator, as in the case of a screw.
The abutments or thrust disks 31 are readily removable and may be replaced by others to suit the particular workman.

So also the circular cam or eccentric may be replaced by the cam 41 shown in Fig. 1, where a single action device is desired.
In Fig. 6 is shown a bracket 50 having a fork 51 at its outer end and provided at its inner end with a centrally apertured threaded cap 52. The attaching nut 53 extends through the cap 52 and has a collar 53 engaging the inner side of the cap 52 so that the latter is held in place thereby. This nut 53 has a threaded socket 54 which screws on to the threaded end of the plug adjusting screw 27.
Within the fork 51 any one of several abutments or actuating devices may be mounted. The abutment shown comprises an eccentric cog mounted onan axis 61 journaled in the bracket and engaged by a cog 62, the axis 63 of which is journaled in the bearings 33 of arm 32, see Fig. 1, in lieu of eccentric 34. The axis 63 of cog 62 is concentric, while in Fig. 7 the eccentric cog 60 is engaged by an eccentric actuating cog 63.
In Fig. 8 the abutment 64 comprises a rectangular plate having two connected rollers 65-65 the said connections being two side arms 66-66 connecting thek endsv of the rollers. The rollers 65 are held in place on the abutment 64 by means of spiral springs 66. The inner face of the abutment has an internally threaded stud 67 to screw e onto the threaded end of adjusting screw 27. The eccentric 34 when thrownagainst the rollers 65 to force the plunger ,forwardly has a roller support instead of a sliding on the abutment 64; the two rollers moving bodily along the abutment.
In Fig. 9 the eccentric 68, used in lieu of eccentric 34, Fig. 1, is provided with an external freely turning sleeve 69 supported on ball bearings 70. f
These several forms of plunger actuating devices are readily interchangeable so that any and all operators may be suited and the desired feel imparted.
In all of the several forms the rear end of the feed plunger is actuated, broadly speaking, from the hand lever by means of cam gearing or cam mechanism.
What I claim is.:
1. In a tail stock for button blank sawing machines. the combination with a lower or base member havingvertical posts, of an upper member provided on its lower side with sockets mounted on said posts, means for adjusting the upper member verticallv on the posts. and means for securing the said member in its adjusted position. and a plunger mounted on said upper member to force the shell toward a tubular saw.
2. In a tail stock for button blank sawing machines. the combination with a lower or base member having vertical posts and lateral extensions. of an upper member having sockets on its under side receiving said posts,
vertically disposed adjusting screws at one side of said sockets and bearing at their lower ends on said extensions, and a plunger mechanism mounted in bearing on said upper member.
3. In a tail stock for button blank sawing machines, the combination with a lower or base member, of an upper member vertically adjustable with respect to the lower member, and formed of two bearing members and a connecting bar, boxes at the upper ends of said two bearing members, a plug-carrying plunger mounted in said boxes, a retracting spring encircling the plunger, a collar fast on the plunger and against said spring acts to retract the plunger, an arm on the collar extending down past the connecting bar and traveling therealong, and a hand actuated operating means for said plunger.
4. In a tail stock for button blank sawing machines, the combination with the plug carrying plunger, of an abutment or thrust device at the rear end of the same, and a hand actuated device engaging said abutment or thrust member adapted to actuate the plunger toward the saw when rotated in either direction. 5. In a tail stock for button blank sawing machines, the combination with a plug carrying plunger :for forcing the shell to the saw, and means for retracti-ng the plunger, of a circular rocking eccentric for throwing the plunger and a hand lever for rocking the eccentric in opposite directions to give two throws to the plunger.
6. The combination, in a tail stock for butto-n blank sawing machines, of a tubular plug carrying spring retracted plunger, a plug pusher within the rear of the plunger, a feed screw for said pusher swiveled in the plunger and provided with an abutment or thrust disk at its outer end, and a disk having an actuating edge engaging said abutment and provided with an actuating hand lever.
7. The combination, in a tail stock for button blank sawing machines, with a lower or base member having vertical posts, of an upper member having vertically split sockets receiving said posts and provided with screws to clamp the sockets to the posts, vertical adjusting screws at one side of said sockets and bearing at their lower ends on portions of said base members, and a plunger mounted on the upper member and provided with actuating means.
8. In a tail stock for button blank sawing machines, the combination with a plugcarrying plunger for forcing the shell t0 thel saw, and means for retracting the plunger, of a circular rocking eccentric operable in both directions to project the plunger, a rolling contact between the eccentric and rear end of the plunger, and a hand lever for actuating the eccentric.
9. In a tail stock for button blank sawing machines, the combination with a plug-carrying plunger for forcing the shell to the saw, and means for retracting the plunger, of a circular rocking eccentric operable in both directions to project the plunger, a loose sleeve on the eccentric, ball bearings between the sleeve and eccentric, and a hand lever for actuating the eccentric.
10. In a tail stock for button blank sawing machines, the combination with aplugcarrying plunger for forcing the shell to the saw, and means for retracting the plunger, of a circular eccentric mechanism at the rear of the plunger adapted to project it when rotated in either direction. i
