Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARNOLD A. KUEI-ILHORN, {on CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ELEVATOR .er'rnonmnnr.
Application filed August 5, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARNOLD A. KUEHL- HORN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 2203 E. 67th St, Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevator Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for elevator gates whereby a bridge or sill plate will be automatically moved to bridge the space between the elevator cab floor and the well sill when the cab approaches a floor or landing.
Vith the above object in view the attachment consists of a plate pivotally attached to the upper end of the lower half of a Meeker door or gate which plate engages a guide as each floor is approached and is thereby swung from vertical to horizontal or bridging position to bridge the opening between the elevator and the floor of the building.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View partly in section of an elevator and elevator gate showing my improvement attached, the gate being in open position;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view the elevator gate closed; and
Fig. 3 is a front view of the elevator 'ate detached showing my improvement attached.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which like reference numerals desig-' nate similar parts throughout the several views, 5 denotes an elevator cab of the type generally used for carrying freight, and operated in any suitable manner within the well 6 of the building 10. The cab 5 is also conventional in form and operation as is the gate or door 7. The latter which is arranged to slide vertically in front of the well opening 18, comprises upper and lower sections 8 and 9 adapted to slide toward and away from each other according to whether they are being moved to closed or open position. Automatic means of any and well known construction (not shown) causes the sections to move away from each other to the open position illustrated in Fig. 1, as the cab approaches a landing, and to closed position illustrated in Fig. 2 when the cab showing Specification of Letters Patent.

leaves the landing. It will of course be understood that there will be a gate at each floor of the building. As the elevator and gates are of conventional construction and no claim is made thereto further description of these parts is deemed unnecessary.
It will be noted that when the cab is at rest at a landing some little space as at 20, exists between the front edge of the floor 11 of the cab and the floor 12 of the building which space if uncovered interferes seriously with the unloading of trucks etc. This space is bridged in the following manner.
' A door sill plate 13 extending approximately the full length of the gate is hinged intermediate of its width to the upper end of the lower gate section 9 as at l l. Rollers 15 are attached to and project laterally from the ends of the plate 13 in position to engage pair of angularly disposed channel iron guides 15 suitably secured above each floor adjacent the well openings 18. As the elevator is loaded and either goes up or down the doors automatically close causing the wheels to travel between and along the inclined faces of the straight side walls or The plate 13 is thus tilted on its pivot to either one or the other of Fig. l or Fig. 2 positions. In the former position the plate extends horizontally over the openings 20 between the floor and elevator cab and rests at one edge on the floor 12, permitting easy trucking off or on to the elevator and when the gates are closed the plate assumes a vertical position by force of gravity. In other words when the gates are moving to closed position and the rollers 15 have cleared the guides 15 the sill plate 13 rocks on its pivot to vertical position under its own weight and the wei ht of the rollers 15.
Il aving thus described my invention:
hat I claim is:
A device of the character described comprising a sill plate pivoted intermediate its width to the elevator door or gate, angularly disposed guide members at each floor of the building, said guide members having spaced parallel straight side walls or flanges, and rollers attached to and projecting laterally from said sill plate for engaging between. said flanges whereby the sill is moved to hori zontal position to bridge the space between In testimony whereof I aifix my signature the elevator floor and respective floors of the in presence of two witnessses.
building when the elevator gates are open, ARNOLD A. KUEHLHORN. said S11], plate adapted to rock on its pivot Witnessses: V 5 to vertical position by force of gravity when F. B. HAMMAN,
the elevator gates are being closed. G. H. GRooE.
