This plate-is most conveniently made as a separate piecc, but is preferably rigidly secured to one end of the rim by means such as the rivets 17. For extra security, it may have a (love tailed lateral projection 18 occupying a si1nilarl v'shaped complemcntal recess 19 formed in the rib M, but this additional anchorage is not regarded'as essential. A dovetailed projection 20 formed on the plate 16 occupies a similarly-shaped complemental recess 21 formed in the rib let on tho rim-end opposite the end to which the locking plate adjacent edge of the plate 16 so as relatively to displace the ends of the rim laterally, and when the projection 20 is free, the ends of the rim may be further pried apart both radially and laterally until they clear each other, after which the rim is easily removed from within the tire by progressively pulling it away from the latter, beginning at the end of the rim carrying the lockingplate 16. lhe a1nilicati0n ot the rim to a tire is performed in. a reverse manner, the rim being first partially collapsed by disalining and overlapping its ends. the end having the recess 21 being applied firsh' after which the rim is progressively pushed into the tire. and the ends finally, spread apart, brought into alinement and interlocked with the aid ot a screw-driver or othtazsuitable tool.

Fig. 6 shows an arrangement similar to Figs. 4c and 5, except that the Stud 22 is made rectangular or straight-faced, and the recess 24: correspondingly shaped, and the stud in this case is not hollow. This View also represents the rim flanges 12 as adapted for the clencher style of tire, whereas the other views represent rims for straightsided tires, my invention applying to either type.
Figs. 7 and 8 show a lockin stud 22 in general similar to the one siown in the foregoing modification but occupying a four-sided aperture 24: in the locking-plate 16 and having a beveled rear tape 25 up which the locking-plate rides whenlthe rim ends are being pried apart. Fig. 7 shows a mode of mounting the rim 10 on the fixed rim 26 of the folly 27 and securing it by means of bolts andclips such as 2'? 28.
Fig. 8 shows one of the rivets 17 for anchoring the locking-plate formed with a head adapted to enter a suitable recess in the fixed rim and act as a driving lug.
It will be understood that various other modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
1 claim:
1. A single-piece demountable tire-carrying rim transversely split in a plane substantially parallel with its axis of rotation, and having rigidly-mounted interlocking and alining devices, said devices arranged to prevent circumferential separation of the rim ends and adapted to preserve the radial alinement of said ends as to relative move ment in either direction when the ends are batted together.
2. A demountablo tire-carrying rim transversely split and provided on the bottom or inner side of the rim base with rigidly mounted members which interlock by relative lateral movement of the rim ends to prevent their circumferential separation, one of said members bridging the joint between the rim ends.
'3. A demountablo tire-carrying rim transversely split and having a locking shoulder near one rim end, and a locking plate rigidly mountcd on the other rim end and overlapping the joint, said plate having hooked engagement with said shoulder by relative lateral movement of the rim ends to prevent circumferential separation of the latter.

4. A demountable tire-carrying rim transversely split and formed on its inner side with a circumferential rim-supporting rib, said rib being provided with a recess near one end of the rim, and a locking plate adapted to enter said recess by lateral movement for interlocking the rim ends.
5. A demountable tire-carrying rim transverselysplit and 'formed on its inner side with a rim-supporting rib which is recessed near one end, together with a locking plate rigidly mounted on the other end of .the rim and provided with a lateral projection for entering said recess by relative lateral movement of the rim ends to lock the'latter against circumferential separation.
6. A demountable tire-carrying rim transversel provi ed with rigidly-mounted coupling members which interlock the rim ends as to both circumferential and radial separation and which engage and disengage by relative lateral'movement of the rim ends, one of said members being a plate which bridges the joint.
7. A demountable tire-carrying rim transversely split and formed on its inner side split and having its end portions with a circumferential rim-supporting rib provided near one end with an under-cut recess, and a locking plate rigidly attached to the other end of the rim and having a complemental lateral locking projection adapted to enter said recess.
8. A demountable tire-carrying rim transversely split substantially at right-angles to the sides and having its end portions provided respectively with an undercut locking member and a rigidly-mounted locking plate bridging the joint and adapted for hooked engagement with said member.
9. The combination with a transversely split tire-carrying rim, of a locking device for securing the rim-ends together, comprising members rigid on the rim-ends respectively, one of said members having an opening therein for receiving the other member,
said members having interfitting dove-tailed edges which secure the rim-ends against relative radial movement when the rim is subjected to contracting pressure and when it is subjected to expanding pressure.
