NUT-LOCK.
Application filed December 30. 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Iie it known that we, I'IENRY L. MARBUR- our. and LOUIS H. BERG, citizens of the United States. residing in Baltimore city and Baltimore. county, respectively, and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to nut locks.
One object of our invention is to provide a nut lock which can be applied to the nut without the use of tools.
Another object of our invention is to provide a nut lock which can be removed from the nut without the use of tools.
Another object of our invention is to provide a nut lock which can be sold as an article of commerce and be applied to existing nuts with very little change in the nuts or in the bolts to which said nuts are applied.
Another object of our invention is to provide a nut lock which is ornamental in ap pearance.
Another object of our invention is to provide a simple, cheap and effective nut look.
In carrying out our invention we make use of the instrumentalities illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a bolt and nut with our improved nut lock applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side view of a standard nut altered for use with our improved nut lock.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the nut shown in Fig. 3.
Figs. 5 and 6 are plan and side views of our improved nut look.
In the drawings 10 represents an ordinary bolt which is arranged for use with our improved nut look by having a flat surface formed as at 11 on one side of the threaded portion thereof above the part of said threaded portion upon which the nut is to rest when said nut is screwed home.
12 is the nut which may be either square or hexagonal in shape, or have any number of sides desired, for the application of a wrench thereto.

A. semicircular groove such as 13 is filed, milled or is otherwise formed in the sides of the nut 12.
()ur improved nut lock consists of a body portion 14L provided with a neck 15, the latter being perforated with a circular shaped hole 16 having a Hat side as at 17, the former of which fits loosely on the threaded portion of the bolt 10 and the latter of which fits loosely against the flat surface 11 provided on the threaded portion of said bolt.
The function of the portion '17 fitting against the fiat surface 11 is to prevent revolution of our improved nut lock. The'body 1 1 and neck 15 are preferably formed integrally. Formed integrally with the portion 1 1 are two spring portions 18-48 which terminate at their ends in the holding fingers 1919, the latter being shaped to fit the groove 13.
The manner of use and the operation of our improved nut lock are as follows The nut 12 being screwed home, our improved nut lock is then applied to the threaded portion of the bolt 10 with the circular portion 16 embracing the threaded portion of said bolt and the flat side 17 overlying the fiat surface 11. The nut lock is then pushed downwardly, (see Fig. 1), and during its downward motion the lower side of the holding fingers 1919 strikes the chamfer 20 of the nut 12 and the lower ends of said fingers are forced outwardly against the resistance of the springs 1818. Further downward motion of our improved nut lock brings the fingers 1919 in alinement with the groove such as 13 and then the springs 1818 force the fingers 1919 into the grooves such as 13 in the position shown in Fig. 1. In this position, the bottom side of the body portion 14 may rest against the nut 12 or be at some distance above the top of said nut, it being immaterial whether or not the body portion 14 is in contact with the nut 12.
When our improved nut lock is to be removed, the fingers are to be applied to the springs 1818 and said nut lock is to be moved upwardly. During the upward motion of said nut lock, the upper sides of the grooves such as 13 will force the fingers 1919 outwardly against the resistance of the spring 18 and then said fingers slide upwardly on the sides of the nut 12.
While we have shown our improved nut look as provided with a neck 15, this neck may be omitted if desired and a flat sided hole such as shown in Fig. 5 may be formed in the body portion 14. We may also make the spring portions 1818 of a large vaviety of shapes. The body portion let may also be curved, as shown, or may be flat and the opposed inner surface of the fingers 1919 may be circular in shape, as shown in Fig. 6, or said surfaces may be replaced by surfaces forming acute angles.
The groove 18 may be either semicircular in shape-as shown in Fig. 3, it may have a fiat bottom, or it may be formed by two surfaces forming an acute angle.
The top of the bolt may have one flat surface as at 11 or it may be made in a variety of shapes, the flat sided hole shown in Fig. 5 being correspondingly altered to fit, the requirement being that the end of th'e threaded portion of the bolt 10 and the hole in the body portion 1a; are so shaped that the bolt will prevent revolution of our improved nut lock.
While we have shown one embodiment of our invention, it is evident that many changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit thereof.
l/Ve claim The combination with a threaded bolt, of a nut screwed on said bolt, a flat portion on the threaded end of said bolt, a nut lock having a body portion provided with a fiat sided hole to fit the threaded end of said bolt and the fiat portion of said bolt whereby said nut lock is prevented from turning, spring portions and holding fingers on said nut lock, grooves in said nut for the reception of said fingers, said spring portions being out of contact with said nut from said body portion to said holding fingers, and a flat-sided hollow cylindrical neck formed integrally with said body portion and em bracing said end of said bolt.
