To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YNOCENTE J. MOLINA, a citizen of Mexico, residing at Douglas, in the county of Cochise and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Indicators and Alarms, of which the following is a speclfication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a signaling and recording apparatus, and has for its object the production of a relatively simple and efficient apparatus for sounding a signal or an alarm and at the same time producing a record showing the pressure in the cylinder or boiler of the engine.
With this and other objects in view my invention comprises certain novel constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and
more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the valve casing and stem of the whistleor signaling device of my apparatus.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, l designates the steam inlet pipe and 2 the air inlet pipe. The flow of steam to cylinder 8 is controlled through the medium of valve 4, and the flow of air through pipe 2, to cylinder 3, is controlled through the medium of valves 5 and 6, Fig. 2 By opening the valves 5 and 6, as well as 4, air can pass from pipe 2 directly into the cylinder 3, be low the piston head 7, and by closing valves 5 and 6, air can be prevented from entering into the lower end of cylinder 3. Upon opening valve 4, steam may be permitted to enter the cylinder 3, and upon steam or air entering the cylinder the piston rod 8 will be moved vertically, against the coiled spring 9 by the action of the steam or air upon the piston head 7, and as a consequence the piston rod will be raised, thereby raising the cam device 10 carried thereon.
The cam device 10 comprises a bracket 11 (Figs. 2? and 4) provided at its central portion with a clamp 12 and at its inner end with a pointer 13, and at its outer end with a dove-tail socketed portion l l,'upon which is mounted a thumbscrew or bolt 15. A slidable plate 16 is provided with a dovetail tenon 17, that is normally positioned in the dove-tailed socket of the end'14: of the bracket 11, and throughthe medium of the thumb screw or bolt 15, It will readily be understood that the vertically slidable plate 16 can be secured in an-adjusted position upon the bracket 11. Theplate 16 is provided at its upper and lower ends with similarly constructed cam projections 18, 18, and between these projections 18 is a detachable cam plate 19. This cam plate 19 is provided with a screw 20 (Fig. 3) which is adapted to be threaded into any one of three threaded sockets 21, formed in the plate 16. The advantage of having the intermediate cam plate or projection 19 adjustable is that the operator can determine the excess amount of pressure that. the engine can stand, and after the signal whistle 22 has been sounded by the roller 2303f the valve stem 24, coming in contact with the upper cam projection 18, then the second or intermediate projection 19 will operate the valve incasing 25 to sound a second alarm, if the engineer or operator does not respond upon the sounding of the first alarm, by the vertically movable cam device 10 operating the signal. Of course it will be understood that valve 6 is normally open, when steam is used to operate the apparatus, because asufficient amount of steam must be allowed ,to pass into the whistle or signal-carrying pipe 26 to sound the-alarm 22, when the valve in casing 25 is opened.
Through the medium of the screws 27 and their integral nut 28, the tension of the coil spring 9 is adjusted; secured tovthe screws 27, at their lower ends, is a plunger or plate 29 that bears directly against the upper end of coil spring. 9, and by screwinginwardly upon screws 27,. the spring will be compressed, and if the screws 27 are screwed upwardly then the tension of the spring will be lessened.
An oil cup 29 is carried by cap 30 on the upper end of the cylinder 3.
The bracket device comprises the primary sectional band 31 (Fig. 1) that surrounds the cylinder 3, and the auxiliary sectional band 32 (Fig. 2") that surrounds the pipe 26. These bands are supported upon the main plate 33, and sets of bolts 35 are provided for furnishing means whereby the apparatus can be attached near its lower end to a suitable support. Two of these clampmg devices are used, one near the bottom of the apparatus, as just stated, and the other near the top of the cylinder 3, as shown in Fig. 2
Secured contiguous to the pointer 13 is a vertical scale 36 that is provided for furnishing a suitable and readily-discernible reading of the pressure; any suitable numerals can be exposed upon this scale 36, as best suits the constructor or operator of the apparatus.
Secured to the extreme upper end of the piston rod 8 is preferably an integral right angle extension 37, and secured to the outer end of this extension 37 is an upright or vertical support 38; this extension 37 and support 38 constitute a continuation of the piston rod or piston head carrying means, and therefore in the appended claims I wish it to be understood that I use in a broad sense the term piston rod to designate the supporting means for the recording or pen carrying device.
Hinged at 39, to the upper end of the extension 38, is a guiding plate 40, that constitutes a track over which the roller 41 travels, (see Fig. 2). Pivotally connected to the guiding plate 40, at 42, is a screw 43, which screw is threaded through the enlarged threaded portion 44, formed upon the lower part of the extension 38, Fig. 2. By adjusting the screw the track plate 41 can be screwed outwardly or inwardly upon its pivot 39 with respect to the extension 38.
The clock and sheet-supporting casing or frame 45 (Fig. 2 may be secured to any suitable support, contiguous to the upper end of the apparatus, and within this frame or casing 45 is secured an ordinary clock, and to the mechanism of the clock, through the medium of a stem at 48, a sheet of paper 49 is mounted upon the face of the clock and held thereon by placing the sheet of paper 49 upon stem 48 and then screwing the nut 50 upon the stem 48. The paper or sheet to contain the record is revolved by the clock mechanism and the record is made upon the outer face of the sheet or disk 49.
A headed bolt 56 is suitably supported upon the casing 45 and the pen-carrying device is thereby secured in an operative position. An extension 57 is supported upon bolt 56 and the roller 41 is journaled thereon and said roller travels over the outer face of the track plate 40. An angle bolt 60 is secured to one side of the extension 57, and on this bolt is mounted a threaded weight Or large nut 61. This threaded weight or nut 61 causes the roller 41 to have a tendency to move downward upon the track plate 40.
Secured at the bolt 56 is a split vertical extension 62, in which is positioned the lower end of the spring bar 63, carrying a pen at 64, and the reservoir or ink well 65.
A slot 66 is formed in the extension 62 and a screw 67 is mounted in this slot 66 and engages the lower portion of the spring bar 63 for holding the plate in position upon the extension 62.
A thumb bolt 68 is mounted upon the upper bifurcated end of the extension62, and a cam 69 is secured to the bolt 68 and is employed for pressing inwardly upon the spring bar 63 for controlling the position of the pen point 64 with respect to the sheet 49; it will be obvious that by rotating the bolt 68 the bar 63 can be placed near to or farther away from the sheet 49, for causing a light or a heavy marking upon the sheet as desired.
As the signal 22 is actuated through the medium of the cam devices, carried by the piston rod, so also is the recording device actuated for recording the amount of pressure in the cylinder 3 that is directly connected to the boiler or main cylinder of the engine, and upon the operatoror inspector examining the sheet 49, he will find recorded the exact amount of pressure during a period of twenty-four hours, as I ordinarily use a twenty-four hour clock 47.
What I claim is:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a cylinder provided with a piston rod, a signal provided with a valve having a stem positioned contiguous to said piston rod, a bracket secured to sald piston rod, said bracket provided with a socket, a vertically slidable plate supported in said socket of the bracket, means for fastening said plate in an adjusted positlon upon said bracket, and said plate provlded with a cam projection adapted to operate said stem of the valve for actuating the signal. v
2. In an apparatus of the class descrlbed, the combination with a cylinder, a piston rod extending into said cylinder, a valved signal contiguous to said piston rod and a cam device secured to said piston rod and adapted to actuate said v(lved signal, said cam device comprising a socketed bracket, a plate provided with a tenon positioned in the socket of said bracket, means engaging the tenon for holding the plate in an adjusted position upon the bracket, said plate provided at opposite ends With cam projections, said plate provided in one side With a plurality of threaded sockets, a detachable cam plate positioned upon the socketed side of said first-mentioned plate, and a threaded bolt extending through the detachable cam plate and into one of the threaded sockets of said plate.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a cylinder, a piston rod in said cylinder, of a spring around said rod, a plate on said rod and engaging one end of said spring, bolts secured at their inner ends to said plate and being adapted to adjust the same Within the cylinder for controlling the tension of the spring, and signaling means cooperating With the piston rod.
