To all whom 25 may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES EDGAR ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Danbury, county of Faireld, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antiskid Devices; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in an antiskid attachment for wheels and its principal object is to provide a simple attachment which may be expeditiously locked about a spoke and which will seat on the felly and be held thereonby the attached antiskid means.
The invention consists of an attaching plate or body having chain attaching means at each end for securing a pair of circumferentially spaced antiskid chains about the tire, said body plate having a spoke-receiving recess and novel means for securing a spoke of the wheel therein in a quickly-detachable manner.
Further, the invention resides and consists in the features of construction hereinafter more clearly described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved antiskid device as applied to a wheel, the latter being dotted in fragment.

The body plate consists of a central portion -1 having attenuated ends 2 that are individually equipped with a pair of laterally disposed hooks 3 inturnedy in opposing but spaced relation to permit the threading of the terminal links of an antiskid chain 4 thereover. Adjacent each end of the body plate is fixed the inner end of a leaf spring keeper 5 which has its outer end extending outwardly beneath and in contact with the adjacent inturned and opposing hooks 3 to bridge the intervening space and thereby act as a guard for retaining both links on their own hooks. ln this connection, it will be noted that the links are snapped into engagement merely by pressing the same down onto the spring keeper'to depress the latter and then sliding the links laterally and in opposite dire-ctions beneath the hooks. y
The central portion of the body plate is formed with a lateral cut-outv or recess 6 for and close the same as well as to embrace they spoke. The gate 8 has a beveled outer end 9 to seat on a beveled face 10 on the opposite side of the recess where it is firmly secured by means of a catch 11 that is pivoted at,12 on the body plate and has a hook terminal 13 for engaging a pin 14 carried by the gate. The opposite terminal 15 of the catch lever constitutes a handle and is normally held operative by a stop pin 16. This stop pin or latch operates in an opening through the body and is supported on an underlying leaf spring 17 that is fixed at one end to the underside of the body and has its opposite end extending beyond the latter to constitute a handle. The leaf spring is guided within a groove 18 formed in the underside of the body.
In applying the antiskid device to a wheel, the body plate is passed about the selected spoke and the gate 8 swung to closed position where its pin 14 is engaged by swinging the catch lever 11. The stop piu 16 has a side bevel to effect depression thereof as the leverl rides over said bevel, and as soon as the lever is in its fully operative position it will have moved beyond the stop pin to permit the spring 17 returning the latter to operative position. To facilitate properly positioning the body plate and also to steady it from turning about thel spoke, said body is provided with a pair of stops 19 which depend from the opposite ends thereof to engage a side of the wheel felly. The chains may now be hooked to the ends of the plate.
To disconnect the device the chains are removed from about the tire and then by pressing down on leaf spring 17 the stop or latch pin will be depressed from the path Obviously, more than one device may be applied to a single Wheel and when a plurality are employed the spacing Will be left to the judgment of the user. The stop pin prevents accidental uncatching of the lever ll When encountered by an obstruction on, the road, and the spring keepers efficiently operate to hold the chains engaged With their hooks. The device also is quickly ap*- plied or removed Without disturbing the position of the Wheel.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
l. An antislid attachment for Wheels comprising a body plate adapted to seat on the Wheel telly and formed with a central lateral recess to receive a Spoke, a gate pivoted to the body on one side of the recess to swing across the latter, a pin on the free end of the gate, acatch lever pivoted between its ends on the body and having a hooked terminal to engage over the pin, a latch pin slidable through the body and into the path of the opposite end of the catch lever 'for holding it operative, a leaf spring secured tc the `bottom side of the plate in aguiding groove tormed therein and serving to hold the latch pin operative, and antiskid means carried by the body.
2. An antiskid attachment for Wheels,v
comprising a body plate adapted to` seat on the Wheel felly and formed With a central lateral recess to receive a spoke, a gate pivoted to the body on one side or' the recess to swing across the latter, a pin on the free end of the gate, a. catch lever pivoted bei tween its ends on the body and having a hooked termina-l to engage over the pin, a latch pin slidable through the body and into the pathv oi' the opposite end or" the catch lever for holding it operative, a leaf spring secured to the bottom side of the plate in a guiding groove formed therein and serving to hold the latch pin operative, and chain-securing means arranged at each end, of the body.
3. An antiskid attachment for Wheels, comprising a body plate having a lateral, centrally located recess to receive a Wheel: spoke, means closing the recess to secure the spoke therein, depending stops at opposite ends oi the body to engage a side of the wheel elly, and means on the opposite ends of the body for connecting` antiskid chains thereto.
