To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that, I, J osnrrr WoJTAsInwIcz, a citizen of Poland, residing at Chadwicks, in the county of Oneida andState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snowplows, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of means for quickly removing snow and ice from a roadway such as a street car track, the structure being exceed: ingly strong for cutting its way through accumulations of snow andbeing readily con trolled by a single operator.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a snow plow in the nature of a car adapted for traveling upon a track and having power means for cutting through ice and snow during forward travel as wellas cleaning means for' the cutters whereby the invention is more eflicient in its operation.
With these general objects in view the invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

My invention contemplates the provision of a car 10 similar in form to the usual street car with wheels 11 adapted for travel upon a track 12, any desired form of motive power being provided, such as an electric locomotive, notshown, adapted for pushing the car 10 forwardly upon the track 12.
The forward end 13 of the car 10 is V-shaped in horizontal cross section having side members 14 terminating downwardly in a pointed plow portion 15 adjacent the track 12.
' A plurality of shafts 16 herein shown as two in number, are j ournaled upon each side of the car front 13 by means of brackets 17 and 18 secured to the side portions 14 and are provided with forwardly projecting noz-i zles 21 for blowing air upon the cutters 19 of each shaft'16.
A power gear 22 is carried by a shaft 23 j ournaled transversely of the car 10,, the said gear projecting through an opening 24 of the bottom 25 ofthe car in constant. mesh with a pinion 26 carried by the revolving axle 27 of one ofthe track wheels 11. The gear 22 meshes with a pinion 28 upona shaft 29 transversely within the car 10, while a clutch member 30 is also carried by the shaft 29. A clutch member 31 adapted to cooperate with the member 30 is slidably mounted upon the shaft 29 with a sprocket wheel 32 secured to the clutch member 31 for revolving therewith,-the said sprocket wheel being connected by means of a chain 33 with a similar'sprocket 34 carried by a shaft 35 journaled in brackets 36 adjacent the forward end of the car 10.
A hub 37 slidable upon the shaft 29 with l the wheel 32 and the clutch member 31 has an operating rocker arm 38 connected by a rod 39 with an actuating lever 40 adjacentthe rear end of the car. It will be apparent that upon shifting the lever 40 forwardly, the rod 39 and arm 38 will force the hub 37, wheel 32' and clutch member 31 toward the clutch member 30 thereby engaging the clutch members 30 and 31 for turning the shaft 35 by means of the tractor'wheel 11. The lever 40 has the usual retaining means 41 for engaging a toothed segment 42, the reverse or rearward movement of the lever 40 being adapted to bring the clutch member 31 out of engagement with the positively driven clutch member 30 to the inoperative position shown in' Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. 2 i
An operating shaft is journaled through the sides 14 for each of the shafts 16, beveled pinions 44 being provided upon the inner ends of the shafts 43 in constant mesh with similar pinions 45 secured upon the' shaft 35. Beveled pinions 46 upon the outer ends of the shafts 43 are in constant mesh with similar pinions 47 upon the upper ends of the shafts 16 and whereby the shafts 16 and cutters 19 are forcibly revolved by turning the shaft 35 in the manner heretofore noted. The pinions 45 are oppositely set at the opposite sides of the sprocket wheel 34 providing opposite engagement with the shafts 43 through the opposite sides 14, so'
wheel slidable therewith and connected by a chain 56 with a sprocket 57 upon the slidable hub 37.
A hub 58 attached to the sprocket 55 and clutch member 54 is slidable upon the shaft 52 while a rocker arm 59 is connected by a rod 60 with a lever 61 for readily shifting the arm 59, throwing the clutch member 54 into and out of engagement with the clutch member 53 at will. The outlet pipe 62 of the pump 48 is controlled by a valve 63 within the car 10 and has branch connections 64 with air pipes 65 extending forwardly of the car and each having branches 66 connected to theoutlet pipes 20 whereby air may be forced through the nozzles 21 at will. The manner of operatively connecting the cutter shaft-s 16 with the power shaft 29 through the clutch members 3031 by means of the lever 40 having been described, it will be seen that when the clutch 30-31 is closed, that the chain 56 will turn the sprocket 55 and clutch member 54 so that upon forwardly moving the lever 61 for engaging the clutch member 54 with the clutch member 53, the shaft 52 will be revolved for operating the hub 58. The cutting operation may be effected either with or without the employment of the blowing nozzles 21 but the pump 48 for the blowers is incapable of operation when the cutter shafts 16 are idle. The opposite pairs of shafts 16 are preferably revolved outwardly for cutting and throwing the snow in opposite directions while the blowing nozzles 21 free the cutters 19 from snow rendering the continuous operation of the cutters possible during the forward movement of the car 10. A suitable form of scrapers 67 are preferably positioned beneath the car 10 projecting from the opposite sides thereof and assisting to clean the track 12 of snow and ice operated upon by the cutters 19. An inclined bottom 68 is preferably provided for the plow portion 15 of the car front so that the entire car is substantially inclosed for operation during cold weather.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A snow plow pointed forward end, pairs of inclined shafts journaled upon the opposite sides of said forward end, snow cutters upon said shafts, a transverse power shaft within the forward portion of the car, operative connections between said power shaft and cutter shafts whereby the cutter shafts upon the opposite sides of the car are adapted for simultaneous operation in opposite directions, and air blasting nozzles alined with the snow cutters for removing snow therefrom during operation.
2. In combination with a car having track wheels, a forward end of the car arranged in V-shaped formation, ashaft transversely journaled within the forward portion of the car. a pair of cutting members journaled exteriorly of the car upon the opposite sides of the forward end thereof. connecting members geared between said cutting means and transverse sh aft whereby the cutting means at one side of the car is adapted for rotation simultaneously and in a direction opposite to the cutting members at the opposite sides of the car. and air blasting nozzles alined with the cutting members for cleaning the same of snow during operation.
3. In combination with a car having track wheels, a power shaft within the car operativelv geared to said wheels, cutting means positioned upright outwardly of the forward end of the car on opposite sides thereof, clutching means adapted for detachable engagement with said power shaft, operatively connected to said cutting means, an air pump within the car, a clutch member for the air pump adapted for rotation with said clutching member of the cutting means whereby the pump is adapted for actuation by the track wheels only during the operation of said cutting means and air blast means connected to said pump positioned upon the forward end of the car directed toward the said cutting means.
4. In combination with a car having a tapered forward end, inclined shafts journaled upon the opposite sides of said for-v ward end, cutters secured to said inclined shafts in intermediate planes, pinions upon the upper ends. of said shafts, a power shaft within the car, connecting means journaled through the forward end of the car having geared connections with said pinions, oppocomprising a car with a sitely arranged pinions, connections between said connectors and power shaft whereby the inclined shafts are adapted for rotation in different directions at opposite sides of the car, operating means for said power shaft, air pipes within the forward end of the car, air blast nozzles upon said pipes forwardly projecting in the direction of said cutters, air supplying means for said pipes adapted for operation only during the rota- 10 tion of said power shaft. a In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
