To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. RUssnLL, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps for Bottles or Jars, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in caps for bottles or jars and more particularly to caps made from sheet metal by cutting and bending in contradistinction to being drawn.
The purpose of the invention is to pro vide a metal cap which may be made from sheet metal which has been lacquered prior to the forming of the cap and to produce a cap wherein the exposed surfaces in the finished cap are entirely covered by the lacuer.

he invention consists generally in a sheet metal cap which is made from sheet metal having its surfaces coated with lacquer prior to the formation of the cap and wherein the cap is formed by cutting and bending the metal in contradistinction to drawing the metal. The body portion of the cap is cut from the sheet metal and formed into a cylinder and its edges are united in such a manner as to conceal and cover the raw ed es of the metal formed in the cutting of tfie blank. Referring more in detail to the drawing, my improved cap consists of a body portion 1 and a top 2. This body portion 1 is formed by cutting a blank from a sheet of metal after the same is coated with lac uer as above noted. The blank is then to led into cylindrical form and the meeting edges Joined by interlocking the edges, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, so that the edge 3 entirely covers and conceals the raw edge 4, while the folded edge 5 entirely covers and conceals the raw edge 6. It will be understood that by the raw edge of the metal, I have reference to the exposed steel formed in the cutting of the coated sheet of steel. These raw edges if ex osed will rust and corrode, but by the a ove construction of seam, I am able to entirely cover and conceal these raw edges of the metal.
The side seam 7 of the cylindrical body portion 1 terminates short of the top, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The top for the body portion is also cut from a sheet of metal coated with lacquer, and said sheet may also be ornamented in any desired way, as illustrated for example in Fig. 6. t will be understood that the sheet after being coated is ornamented, and then the disks to form the tops are cut, so that the ornamentation is properly centered in each disk. The disk forming the top 2 is bent so that the wardly as at 8, (see Fig. 3). This top 1s then inserted in the cylindrical body portion 1 of the cap, and is crowded into the same a suflicient distance so the edge 9 of the body portion extends above the extreme upper edge 10 of the top 2. The upper edge of the body portion 9 is then bent bv means of a die or part of the upper otherwise, about the edge 8 of the top. At the same time that this die 'is operating to fold or bend the upper edge of the bod por-V tion over the upwardly extendlng ge of the top, the center part of the top is. crowned upwardly, as at 11, so as to brin the upper outer face of the top substantia ly mto the plane of the extreme upper edges of the seam joining the top to the body of the cap. This crowning of the to brings the ornamented surface thereof ush with the top of the cap, and it also bends the metal so as to further conceal and cover the raw ledge of the metal at the upper edge of the Referring; to Fi 4, it will be noted that the edge 8 is fol ed within the bent over edge of the body of the cap, while the edge 9 of the body of the cap is folded in between the edge 8 and the upwardly crowned part of the top, so that both of these raw edges, as above noted, are entirely covered and concealed. The cap may be then formed with a screw thread 12, by which itis attached to a sultable screw thread at the mouth of the bottle or ar in the usual manner. It may also be formed with vertical ribs, as at 13, which assist .in turning the cap to screw the same on or off from the bottle or jar. These vertical ribs and the screw threads of the cap, are of the usual construction, and have no part in my present invention.
From the above construction, it will be apparent that I have provided a metal cap wherein the entire cap is made by cutting and bending the metal and the top is joined firmly to the body portion of the cap by a seam wherein the raw edges of the material are entirely concealed and covered.
In Fig. 7 of the drawings 1 have shown a slightly modified form of the invention, as the cap, as shown in this figure, has the lower edge thereof rolled or folded, as at 14, so as to prevent forming a sharp edge of metal at the lower edge of the cap, and, furthermore, to substantially conceal and cover the exposed or raw edge of metal formed in the cutting of the blank for the bod portion of the cap.
rom the above construction it will be apparent that in Fig. 7 I have shown a construction of cap wherein all the raw edges of metal formed in cutting the metal from the sheet are substantially covered and concealed.
It will be clearly apparent from the disclosure in Fig. 8 of the drawings how the edges of the parts 1 and 2 happened not to be coated with lacquer or the like. Even though the sheet of material H is coated upon one or both of its surfaces yet when the parts 1 and 2 are stamped out therefrom, as indicated, the edges of said arts where they are out from the sheet will ave n0 lacquer or other coating upon them and would soon rust and destroy the appearance and elliciency of a cap of the class herein described, unless efliciently concealed and protected. 7
While I have described my invention as particularly adapted for forming a bottle cap from lacquered sheet metal, it is to be understood that the metal may be coated with other substances than lacquer and if metal is used it must be of a character to provide a non-corrodin surface.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction ma be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1 A lacquered sheet metal cap for bottles or ars comprising a body portlon cut from sheet metal lacquered on both surfaces thereof throughout, said body portion bemg bent into cylindrical form and having the meeting edges thereof joined b an interfolded seam which conceals and covers the exposed raw edges of the metal formed in cutting the body portion, and a top for closin the end of said body portion, said top being cut from a sheet of metal lacquered on both sides thereof throughout, said top bein joined to the body portion by an interfo ded seam which conceals and covers the exposed raw upper edge of the metal of the body portion and the exposed raw edge of the metal of the top formed in cutting the top.
2 A lacquered sheet metal can for bottles or ars comprising a body portion cut from sheet metal lacquered on both surfaces thereof throughout, said body portion being bent into cylindrical form and having the meeting edges thereof joined by an interfolded seam which conceals and covers the exposed raw edges of the metal formed in cutting the bod portion, and a top for closin the end 0 said body portion, said top being cut from a sheet ofmetal lacquered on both sides thereof throughout, said top being joined to the body portion b an interfolded seam which conceals an covers the exposed raw upper edge of the metal of the body portion and the exposed raw edge of the metal of the to formed in cutting the top, said top bein cut so as to be substantially flush with t e extreme upper part of the seam joinin the top to the body portion, the lower'e ge of said body portion being bent upwardly to conceal the raw edge of the metal at the bottom of the body portion and to stiffen the body of the ca said body portion having a screw-thread ormed therein.
3. A sheet metal cap for bottles comprising a body portion cut from sheet metal coated on both surfaces thereof throughout, said body portion being bent into cylindrical form and having the meeting edges thereof joined by an inter-folded seam which conceals and covers the exposed raw edges of the metal formed in cutting the body portion, and a top for closing the end of said body portion, said top bemg cut from a sheet of metal coated on both sides thereof throughout, said top being joined to the body portion by an interfolded seam which conceals and covers the exposed raw upper edge of the metal of the body portion and the exposed raw edge of the metal of the top formed in cutting the top, the lower edge of said body portion being bent upwardly to conceal the raw edge of the metal at the bottom of the body portion and to stiffen the body of the cap, said body portion having a screw-thread formed therein. Y., for an improvement in "Caps for Bottles or Jars, were erroneously issued, by direct and mesne assignments, of one-third to Paragon Metal Cap Company, Inc., of Brooklyn, New York, a corporation of New York, one-third to Martin King, of New York, N. Y., and one-third to Leslie R. N. Cervalho, of Brooklyn, New York, whereas said Letters Patent should have been issued one-third to the inventor,
