IMPRGVEMENT IN FIRE-=KINDLERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 13Q,'70, dated November 5, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WARREN H. THOMAS, of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Kindlers, to be known as TnoMAss Patent Fire-Kindler, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in a composition for fire-kindler, and in the construction of the handle with the mode of attaching the kindler to the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a side view of my fire-kindler.

A represents the ball orfire-kindler proper, composed of four parts of blue clay, one part of wheat shorts, and one part of wood ashes, which are thoroughly mixed together and moistened with a solution of borax-one ounce of borax to one quart of water. I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to the exact proportions of the ingredients mentioned, as they may be changed, perhaps, without detriment to the efliciency of the kindler. B represents the handle, one end of which is formed with a spiral, 0, and the above composition is pressed or molded over this spiral, after which it is dried and thoroughly burned;

The spiral O is for the purpose of holding the handle more firmly in the composition, and, also, to hold the composition more firmly together. Burning the kindler hardens the composition and burns out the wheat shorts, thereby making the composition porous, so as to absorb oils or other burning-fluids. This kindler is used in the same manner as other kindlers, by dipping it or saturating it with coal or other oils, or any of the known burning fluids or liquids.

I am aware that a porous ball, connected to a wire-handle, is not new, hence I disclaim such to be my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A fire-kindler composed of clay, wheat I shorts, and wood ashes, mixed and moistened with a solution of borax, substantially as herein set forth.

2. A fire-kindler composed of the ingredients herein described, and burned, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The handle B, provided with the spiral G, around which the composition for a firekindler is pressed or molded, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
