To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CznsLAw KoRznNmw- SKI and STEPHEN CHoJNAoKI, subjects of Poland, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Oil Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fuel oil burners of that type embodying a retort which overlies the burner and is exposed to the heat of the flame for the purpose of generating gas from the fuel oil.
The object of the invention is to form a burner improved particularly with respect to the means for heating the retort tube, whereby a large and hot flame is produced and a very efficient operation is obtained, adapting the burner especially for use in furnaces'and the like. Another object of the invention is to provide a quick and ready means for removing the retort tube from the burner for the purpose of cleaning the tube or replacing it with another tube.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the burner. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The burner cap is indicated at 6, and comprises a slitted inverted cup shaped cap which rests within a flange 7 at the edge of the upper plate 8 of the burner body or head. Depending from the plate 8 is an upright mixing tube 9 into which the vapor or gas is discharged from a jet hole 10 near the end of the pipe 11 which receives its supply from an oil feed pipe 12 and extends over the top of the burner as indicated at 13 and bends down beside the burner to position under the same, dischargingthrough the jet hole 10 into the mixing tube 9. The burner head or body also has at one side thereof a depending chamber or passage 14 which extends beside and below the mixing tube 9 and communicates at its upper end with the space in the burner head under the cap 6. The outer side wall of this passage has vertical slit 15 directed toward the vertical part of the pipe 11, and some of the vapor escapes from and burns at these slits to assist in heating said pipe and the oil or vapor therein. The oil tube 11 forms a retort in which the oil is changed to gas by the heat of the burner at the top and also by the heat from the flame through the vertical slits 15 in the outer side wall of the passage 14. 16 is'the starting cup supported by a bracket 17 secured to the extension 14 and located under the feed pipe 11. By placing a small quantity of alcohol or the like in the cup and lighting the same, generation is started. 18 is a needle valve controlling the flow from the supply pipe to the retort. 19 is a nipple which provides a ready means for connecting or disconnecting the retort tube with the oil supply pipe.
In operation, oil fed from the pipe 12 to the retort tube is vaporized in the latter by the heat of the burner both on top and on the side, and the vapor is discharged through the jet 10 and mixes with air in the mixing tube 9.
We claim:
1. The combination of a burner having a. mixing tube leading into the burner head, and a lateral burner passage communicating with said head, and a retort tube overlying the burner and extending down beside the lateral burner passage and provided with a jet orifice directed toward the mixing tube.
2. The combination of a burner comprising a hollow head having a cap thereon with a chamber under the cap, a mixing tube leading to said chamber, a lateral burner located beside the mixing tube and communicating with said chamber, and a retort tube overlying the burner cap and extending downwardly beside the lateral burner and provided with an extension having a jet orifice directed toward said mixing tube.
