Be it known that we, EDMUND GRAHAM, of Dunottar, Kings Road, Knock, Belfast, Ireland, and GEORGE BOWMAN, of Ballygomartin Road, Belfast, Ireland, both sub ects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid J acking Apparatus for Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to jacking apparatus for motor vehicles of the class in which a liquid is used to operate the various jacks.
In such a liquid pressure jacking system there are four jacks, one for each wheel of the vehicle, the liquid being drawn, or taken, by means of a pump, from a liquid container on the vehicle and then forced, by the pump, to
a distributer by means of which the liquid can be distributed to the various jacks. The liquid used is, preferably, oil, and when the jacks are relieved, the oil is returned to the container by the re-action of the jacks themselves in conjunction with the weight of the vehicle. The present invention relates particularly to an improved pumping arrangement for the liquid in conjunction with which we use an improved liquid distributing apparatus.
11 carrying out the invention we provide a preferably double-acting pump with cylinders in alinement and with a central drive effected through the medium of a cam or its equivalent acting upon pump plungers in such manner as to reciprocate the same. Preferably, the pump plungers are made in one with a central chamber or box portion having two openings or slots, one at right angles to the other, the one opening receiving the operating cam and the other opening the cam spindle, the whole arrangement being such, that .as the cam is rotated, the central portion with its plungers is reciprocated. The pump is preferably, placed on, or adjacent to, the gear box of the vehicle and the cam spindle is provided with a wheel which is capable of being driven, when desired, by a suitable device from a wheel on the lay shaft of the change speed gear of the motor. The device is, preferably, operated by lever or edal gear. The double acting pump, as it reciprocates, draws the oil from an oil tank arranged on the vehicle and forces it to a distributing device, which, preferably, consists, of a block having a longitudinal passage therein into which the oil is forced and, at right angles to the passage and communicating therewith, are a number of ports corresponding to the number of jacks to be supplied and also an additional port for the return of the liquid from the jacks to the supply-tank. In order that the invention may be clearly understood we have hereunto appended explanatory drawings whereon;

The jacking system comprises a liquid container or tank 1, a liquid pump 2 mounted on the gear box cl, a distributer 3 for the jacks c and the various pipe connections 4 to 11, the pipes 4 and 6 leading from the tank 1, to the pump 2, the pipe 5 leading from the distributer-back to the tank, the pipe 7 leading from the pump to the distributer and the pipes 8, 9, 10, 11, leading from the distributer to the four jacks e of the vehicle.
The pump is shown, in detail, at Figs. 2, 3 and 4 and is of the double action type comprising two plungers 12, 13 extending laterally from a central box 14 made with a vertical recess 15 and a horizontal slot 16. Within the box is a sliding block 90 within which the cam 18 works. Passing through the horizontal slot 16 is a spindle 17 on which the cam 18 is fixed. At one end of the spindle 17 is a spur wheel '19 with which a spur pinion 20 can be made to engage, this pinion 20 being on a short shaft 21 upon which is a spur wheel 22 capable of engagement with a spur wheel 23 on the usual lay shaft 24 within the gear box d. The spindle 21 has a reduced part or neck 25 formlng a recess within which the rounded lower end of a lever 26 can work, this lever being fulcrumed on a in 27 fitted in the extension 91 of the top of the gear box. The short arm 28 of the lever 26 is connected, by means of a spring 29, with a lug 30 on the gear-box top wlule the arm 31, of the lever can be acted upon by a pin 32 having, at top, a pedal 33 capable of being pressed by the foot of the driver of the vehicle against the action of a spring 34, this spring being secured, at its upper end, to the screw plug 35 inserted in the floor below the drivers seat and, at its lower end, to a pin or washer 36 on the spindle 32. Each pump plunger, is preferably, provided with double leather washers 37, and works tightly within .its cylinder. Each cylinder 38 communicates with a valve chest 39 having an inlet valve 10 and an outlet valve 41 therein. Both valve chests, one of which only is shown in section at Fig. 2, are alike in construction with the exception that the left hand valve chest 39 has, in connection with it, a smaller chest ,12 in which there is an automatic relief valve 43 with spring 51, this chest communicating by the pipe 6 with the liquid tank 1. The chests 39 communicate with each other by the pipes 44, 45.
he construction is such that, by depressing the pedal 33 against the action of the spring 34 the arm 31 can be depressed and the lever 26 moved so as to slide the short shaft 21 toward the right hand side, Fig. 3, thereb causing the spur wheel 22 to engage with t e wheel 23 and the spur pinion 20 to engage with the wheel 19, the rotation of the wheel 23 of the change gear thereby communicating movement to the wheel 19 which causes the cam 18 to rotate and reciprocate the plungers 12, 13, in their cylinders 38. The reciprocation of the plungers in one direction draws liquid by the pipe 4 from the tank 1 through the valve 40 and also forces liquid, previously drawn, past the valve 41 and through the pipe 7 to the distributer from which the pressure liquid is distributed to the jacksin the manner hereinafter set forth. The pump being double acting the pressure of the liquid can be constantly kept up as, when the one plunger is sucking the other is forcing. Should the pressure of the liquid exceed a predetermined amount, which can be regulated by means of the screw 50 and spring load 51 on the valve 43, the valve 43 will open and allow the excess liquid to pass away by the pipe 6 back to the tank 1. The ressure liquid entering the distributer w ich, as shown in Fig. 6, is simply a hollow box or block 52, fills up the internal passage 91. The liquid enters by the branch 53 from the plpe 7 By operating one or other of the screw down valves 58, 59, can be distributed, by means of the branches, 54, 55, 56, 57 and the ipes, 8, 9, 10, 11, to the different jacks. Tie central port 62 of the distributer communicates, by means of the pipe 5, with the tank 1, this central port being under control of the screw down valve 63 (which is shown in section, at Fig. 6). By opening this valve the pressure can be relieved from the passage 91 and from the various jacks, and the liquid be returned to the tank, by the pipe 5, under the action of the springs within the jacks in cooperation with the weight of the obvious that, by manipulating the valves, the liquid pressure can be distributed to any one or more of the jacks as desired.
The drive from the gear box, as described and shown, is given only by way of example and we may take the drive direct from the engine or otherwise as desired.
The modified form of distributer shown at F 1g. 7 has a hollow block 52 with branches 54a to 57, as before, but instead .of having screw down valves for each port, it has ordinary conical valves, one for each port, each valve being normally pressed against its seat by means of a spring. One of the valves 64 with its spring 65 is shown at Fig. 7. Each valve can, when desired, be moved off its seat by means of its rod 66 which has, at its end, a slot or jaw in which one end of a lever, 67 pivoted at 68, can operate, the other end of the lever 67 being acted upon by a second or switch lever 69 pivoted at 70. There would be as before, five valves and consequently five switch levers 69 one of these switch levers being pushed up when it is desired to open a valve and pushed down when it is desired to close a valve. When a switch lever is pushed up, its cam part 71, acts on the corresponding lever 67 and pulls the rod 66 thereby opening the valve 64 against the action of the spring 65 whereas, when the valve is pushed down the spring re-acts to close the valve in a manner well understood by those acquainted with the art. 72 is a bracket for supporting the distributer.
If desired the shaft 21 can, of course, be arranged to be shifted by a hand lever instead of by the pedal 33.
It is obvious the apparatus can be modified or altered in its details of construction without departing from the invention.
The whole apparatus is very simple and effective in action and, owing to the fact that any one, or all, of the jacks can be 0perated, as desired, every facility is given for change speed gear raisingthe car bodily or for raising one or more of the wheels as may be desired.
Having now fully described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Liquid jacking apparatus for motor vehicles comprising, in combination, aliquid receptacle on the vehicle, a pump in communication with said receptacle, means whereby the pump can be driven from the of the vehicle by means of intermediate gear which can be thrown into action by means of a pedal operated lever, a distrib on the vehicle and in communication with said pump, and a plurality of liquid jacks in communication with said distributer, the distributer being constructed and arranged to permit liquid from the pump to be distributed to any one or all of the jacks as desired.
2. Liquid jacking apparatus for motor vehicles comprising, in combination a liquid receptacle on the vehicle, a pump in communication with said receptacle, means whereby the pump can be driven from the change speed gear of the vehicle by means of intermediate gear which can be thrown into action by means of a pedal operated lever, spring means for throwing the intermediate gear out of action, a distributer on the vehicle and in communication with said pump, and a plurality of liquid acks in communication with said distributer, the distributer being constructed and arranged to permit liquid from tributed to any one or all of the jacks as desired.
3. Liquid jacking apparatus for motor vehicles comprising, in combination, a liquid receptacle on the vehicle, a double acting pump on the vehicle, cam meansfor operating the pump, gear for operating the cam from the motor mechanism of the vehicle, said gear comprising a shifting wheel, a lever for shifting the wheel and pedal means for operating said lever, a plurality ofliquid jacks permanently secured to the vehicle, and means for distributing liquid under pressure to the jacks.

5. Liquid jacking apparatus for motor vehicles comprising, in combination, a liquid receptacle on the vehicle, a double acting pump on the vehicle, cam means for operating the pump, gear for operating the cam from the change speed gear. of the vehicle, a plurality of liquid jacks permanently secured to the vehicle, means for distributing liquid under pressure to the jacks and means for relieving the pressure, the distributing means consisting of a box with a series of valves, one for each jack, means for opening and closing said valves, a relief valve other than the first recited pressure relieving means, and means for operating the said relief valve at will.
6. Liquid jacking apparatus for motor vehicles embodyin a liquid receptacle on the vehicle, a pump in communication with said receptacle, means whereby the ump may be driven from the change spee gear of the vehicle by means of intermediate ear, means operable at will for throwing the said intermediate gear into and out of active position with respect to the said change speed gear, a distributer on the vehicle in communication with said pump, and a plurality jacks in communication with said distributer, the distributer operating to permit liquid from the pump to be distributed to any one or all of the jacks as desired.

Liquid jacking apparatus vfor motor vehicles embodying a liquid receptacle on the vehicle, a piunp in communication with said receptacle, means whereby the pump may be driven from the change speed gear of the vehicle by means of intermediate gear, means operable at will for throwing the said intermediate gear into and out of active position with speed gear, a plurality of liquid jacks, a distributor on the vehicle in communication with said pump and said jacks, said distributer having distributing valves individual to the-jacks and acombined pressure relief and liquid return valve for relieving the pressure at the jacks and allowing the liquid to be returned to said receptacle.
