WILLIAM J. KULOW, OF PINE BLUFF, ARKANSAS.
CONCRETE-CHIMNEY FORM.
Application filed August 12, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. KULOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Blufl, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Concrete-Chimney Forms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to concrete chimney forms and aims to provide a form of this character, which is simple and durable of construction, for the purpose of erecting tapered chimneys or other annular structures.
Another object is to provide a form in which there is employed spaced inner and outer forms whose diameters may be regulated, the said forms being of a flexible character to allow for change of radii.
Another object is to provide a chimney form embodying separate segmental sections, having novel means of detachably connecting the sections together, so that any of the sections may be easily and quickly removed.
A further object is to provide the spaced inner and outer forms with novel means for holding the same in contacting relation to maintain the said forms in proper relative position for use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a concrete chimney form embodying the present invention, a portion of the outer form being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail edge View of a portion of the inside form.
Fig. 4 is a similar View of the outside form and the supporting means therefor.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation of the outside form illustrating the manner of connecting the sections.
Fig. 6 is a similar view of the inside form.
Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views showing the clamp for connecting the sections of the inside form.
Fig. 9 is a sectional View on the line 9-9 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 10 is a detail perspective view of the clutch strap casting.
Fig. 11 is an enlarged horizontal section Specification of Letters Patent.

through one of the inside form sections, the sections belng taken on the line 1111 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 12 is a similar view of the outside.
form on the line 1212 of Fig. 5. Fig. 13 is a detail elevation of a bracket for supporting the outside form, showing its connection to a supporting ring, whichoutside form comprises a number of seg:
mental sections, each embodying a sheet metal plate 16 of a flexible character. The upper edge of this plate has secured thereto a preferably wooden strip 17, which. is kerfed, as shown at 18, so as to give flexibility to the strip. Secured along the outer face of the strip is a flexible metal bar 19, the openings through which the fastening devices of the bar pass beingelongated. The opposite side edges of each of the plates 16 are provided with spaced openings 20. Bolts 21, which pass through these openings, serve to connect the adjacent edges of each of the plates to a T bar 22. This provides means for arranging the form in annular formation and permits of the removal or substitution of one or more plates or sections for the purpose of regulating the diameter of the form. I
The inner form, which is designated inits entirety by the reference character 23, is composed of a plurality of sections, each of which include a sheet metal plate 24. Secured longitudinally along one face of the plate 24:, are spaced channel bars 25, which bars have in turn secured thereto spaced transversely arranged-bars 26, the securing device for these bars passing through elongated openings or slots 27. Positionedbetween the upper edge of the plate 24: and the upper bar 26, are filler blocks 28, which are kerfed, as shown at 29, to allow for flexing the plates.
In the use of the invention, the sections 24: are arranged in annular formation and are held together in a manner to be later described, so as to provide an annular or ringlike form, it being preferred to employ two of such forms arranged one uponthe other Patented. Jan. 6, 1920.
and for this purpose the upper bar 26 has one edge disposed slightly above the upper edge of the plate 24. As illustrated in the drawings, each of the sections of the upper or lower annulus or ring of the inner form are flexibly secured together through the medium of a chain 30, which carries at each end a hook 31. One of these hooks engages an opening 32 provided in the upper bar 26 and the other hook engages over the edge of the lower bar 26 of the upper section.
Each of the inner sections are removably secured "together by means of clamps and for this purpose the outer longitudinally disposed bars 25 of each plate has secured thereto an angle iron 33, which is formed with a substantially T-shaped slot 34. Removably positioned within the slots of the adjacent angle iron of each of the sections, is a bolt 35, which carries an adjusting nut 36 threadedly mounted on one end. The opposite end of the bolt 35 has pivotally secured thereto an eccentric 37, which is provided with an operating handle 38. This eccentric is adapted to be moved to tightly clamp the angle iron of each section together, after the nut 36 has been properly adjusted, as will be seen: from Fig. 7 of the drawings. By this means a proper number of sections may be employed to obtain the desired diameter.
The outer form 16 is supported by means of a suitable bearing, which includes cross arms 39, mounted upon suitable supporting legs 40. The cross arms 39 are connected by cables 41 to a supporting ring 42 of cross sectional shape. Secured beneath this ring are a number of brackets 43, which are bolted to the ring, as shown at 43. These brackets are formed in sections, suitably bolted together and are substantially triangular in shape. Their bases 44 are provided with openings 44 for the reception of a hook located at one end of a rod 45. The opposite end of this rod is also provided with a hook for engagement with an eye 46 formed in each alternate bar 22 of the outer form 16.
Removably secured upon the lower end of each of the bars 22, is a hook shaped clamp 47. These clamps are arranged in pairs and are connected together through the medium of acurved clamping rod 48.
In order to properly space the inner and outer forms, there is provided spreaders or gages 49, which are carried by the inside form and consist of wooden strips secured to the top of the inside form, the thickness of the strips being equal to the wall of the chimney. For example, should the bottom I ofthe wall be ten inches and its thickness decreased at the rate of three-eighths of an inch for every eight feet in width and the spreaders or gages formed of one by two strips, the over-hang of the first spreader -would be nine and five-eighths inches and this would be reduced three-eighths of an inch every time the sections were raised in order to allow for the reduction of the thickness of the wall as its width is increased.
The outer form is adjusted to contact with these spreaders or gages, and for this purpose there is provided a casting 50, one end of which is recessed and notched, as shown at 51, these notches being designed to receive the bar 19. The casting 50 is also provided with a socket 52, which receives one end of an adjusting screw 53, the latten being held within the socket by means of a pin 54. The screw 53 operates through an opening 54 in the ring 42 and is held in positionthrough the medium of clamping nuts 55. The screws 53 are arranged in spaced relation upon the ring 42 and are connected to the sections of the outside form, as described; and are designed to adjust the form in con tact with the' spreaders or gages 49. The bars 19 have their adjacent ends connected together through the medium of a fish plate 56, which is provided at each end with slots 57, for the passage of suitable fastening devices. I
In arranging the forms for use, the plates or sections of the outside form are bolted together by means of the bars 22, until the desired number of sections have been connected, the adjacent edges of the last two sections, however, not being connected, but arranged in over-lapping relation. If the form is raised during the erection of the chimney, the scarfed strip 17 of the underlapping sheet is cut away to allow for the increased lap as the diameter of the chimney decreases. When necessary this section is removed and the next section in a similar manner. The same method of procedure is followed in regard to the sections of the inside form, and, where it is necessary, two sheets of the inside form are allowed to over-lap each other by removing the channel bars and scarfed strip at the top of one of the sections.
It is thus apparent that the invention can be used in the construction of chimneys of varying diameters; that the curvature of the sections can be regulated; and that an accu rate and quick adjustment can be made to a true circle as the diameter of the chimney decreases. As the width of the chimney increases, the inside forms are raised to cooperate wit-h the outside form, the upper annular section of the inside form being first raised and the lower annular section raised and clamped to the chimney structure, so as to support the upper section, the connecting chain between the two annular sections permitting of this operation.
Removably supported by the ring 42, are hangers 60, these hangers in turn supporting a channeled ring 61. A substantially U-shaped hanger 62 is engaged over the ring 61 and this last mentioned hanger supports a plank or platform 63, so as to provide a scaffold. The hanger 62 is provided with spaced eyes 64, through which pass safety hooks 65. The hanger 60 is preferably provided with oppositely arranged arms 66 for the purpose of forming a ladder.
Itis believed that when the foregoing description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, use and advantages of the invention will be apparent. The right is reserved to make such changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
