Description

H.- n. CHURCH.
HYDROCARBON MOTOR.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 11. 1916.
1, Patented Jan. 6, 1920. V
' UNITED STATES PATE HAROLD n. cHURoH, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO PACKARD.MOTOR CAR COMPANY, or nn'rzaomivnoniean, A CORPORATION or MICHIGAN.
HYDROGARBON-MOTOR.
To all whom it may concer -7'2.. 1
Beit known that I, HAROLD D. CHURCH,
a'citizen of the United States, and resident. of'Detroit, Wayne county, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Motors,v of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hydrocarbom motors} thereof.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a piston in the use of which oil will not be drawn into the cylinder from aroundthe skirt portion of the piston. Another object of the-invention is to provide a piston with a scraper part that will scrape oil from the cylinder walls and return it to the crank case.
Another object of the invention is to form a one piece piston so that there will be'luppr and particularly to the pistons and lower partsseparated at the'perip and connected by a suitable web.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description taken with the drawings which form a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation embodying this invention;
Fig. 2 1s a longitudinal section through of a piston the piston shown in Fig. 1'; and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2. .f
In the drawings one embodiment of. the invention is shown, but it will be under stood that various modifications thereof may be made without departing from the invention, this particular form being merely illustrative,
by the claims; N
As shown, a piston formed of asingle piece or casting comprises three principal parts, a head portion 10, a skirt portion 11, and a connecting or-web' portion 12.. ,The head portion has a top 13 and a downwardly extending peripheral flange 1 1 in which are arranged the usual piston rings 1.5, any suitable number being used. "The upper edge 16 of the skirt portion 11 is slightly separated fromthe lower edge 17. or the flange Specification of Letters Patent.
the crankcase throu h the scope of the invention and i the novel features thereof being indicated and: extending r rammed Jane, 1920.
I Application filed May 11, 1916, Serial No. 96,880. i f
14 thus forming a space 18 between said edges and causing the edge 16 to act as a scraper for the oil' on the the piston moves upwardly.
The web stantially conical form and connecting the NT oFF oE. i
portion 12 is shown as of sub cylinder Walls as I middle part of the top of the head portion with joins the latter adjacent the upper end. The web portion has several large openings 19 to permit'air to pass freely andto also permit the return to the crankcase of the oil scraped off the cylinder walls. Ribs 20 may,
piston pin supports-or trunnions'21" the upper part of the skirt portion. It
walls during the intake to draw oil from the pispiston embodying this invention as shown there will be -no suction below. the space 18 aswhatever leakage there maybe past the rings 15 will simply draw froin'the skirt walls will be obviated.
Also, due to the scraper action of the edge 16 the surplus oil will be carried back into the openings 19. 7
Having thus described my invention, what ll claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A one piece piston comprising u per and lower parts separated at theperipery airthrough the openings 19 and the tendency. to draw oil to form a gap, said piston having a conical web portion connecting its two parts and 3 inclined outwardly toward its, lower end directly from adjacent the middle of the upper part to the upper edge of the lower part of the piston.
comprising a head portion, a
'2. A piston slightly separated from the skirt portioh head portion piston pin supports tilt/r611 and a web porat the periphery and having 1 v tion connecting the head and skirt portions and extending directly from the upper part of the head portion to adjacent the upper edge of the skirt portion and above said piston pin supports. j v
' 3. A piston comprising a head portion, a skirt portion slightly separated from the head portion at the periphery and said skirt portion having piston pin'supports therein,
and an'integral conical web portion connecting the middle part .of said head portion W1 h said skirt portion above said piston pin supports, said web being inclined outwardly toward its lower end.
In testimony whereof I afiix m HAROLD D. C URCH.
