UNITED "f SHERARDIZING APPARATUS.
Specification o. Letters Patent.
Patented Jan., 6, 1,920.
Application filed March 1, 1919. Serial No. 280,130.
To all whom z' may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES-J. KIRK, a citizen of the United States, a resident of New Castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sherardizing Apparatus, and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to sherardizing apparatus,
As is well known the process of sherardizing consists essentially in applying to metallic surfaces pulverulent zinc partially 0X1- dized and subjecting the same to heat in a closed chamber. The present invention relates to the retort or closed chamber within which the process takes place and has special 1'e"e1'ence to increasing the heating etlieiency whereby the time required for effecting the. sherardizing may be greatly reduced.
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Tn the accompanying drawing Figure l is a longitudinal section ot a rotary sherardizing retort with my invention applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 22 Fig. l.
In the drawing the numeral 2 designates the inelosure for the retort made of firebriek or other refractory material, and of the usual construction with the hinged-top 3. W'ithiu `said inclosure is the retort 4C provided with the hollow trunnions 5 which rest upon the idle-rollers 6 mounted in the brackets 7.
The retort -1 is made up of the end plates 8 with the trunnions 5 extending out therefrom, and the electric heating units 9 fprm- 40 ing with the lid 10 al hexagonal shaped re tort. The heating units 9 may be of .any suitable construction. l
A central heater l1 is provided consisting of the hollow-core l2 with the resistance- 45 coil 13 extending therethrough.
The pulverulent zinc and the articles te he sherardized are to be introduced into` the retort -i, the lid 10 having been removed.y
Power is then applied through the sprocket wheel 1l to rotate the retort. By having the separate heater 11 extending centrally of the retort the heat permeates the mass contained within the retort from `the center outwardly while the heating units' 9 work 56 from the outside in. In this manner the time For the carrying out of the process is greatly reduced due to the greater heatinu eiiicieney and the fact that the heat-Wil radiate from the center without .loss due to external radiation as in the case of the heating units 9.
What ll claim is:
l. n slierardizing appa1atus,'the cornloi-l nation of a rotary retort, external electric' 65 heating units, and an internally arranged electric heating unit.
2. In sherardizing apparatus, the combi-- nation of a rotary retort, external electrie heating units and internal electrical heating units arranged axially of said retort. l
In, testimony whereof l', the said CHARLES J. Kinn, have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES J. KIRK.
