Description

0 wncox.
Improvement in Dies for Making Fifth-Wheels 0f Carriages.
Pa-tented Oct. 29,1912.
Zarzus mlcoz mZ'nesses I Inventor Nrrnn STATES PATENT GFFICE.
DARIUS WILCOX, OF BIRMINGHAM, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR MAKING FIFTH-WHEELS OF CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,705, dated October 29, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DARIUS WILcox, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Forging Blanks for Top Plates of Fifth-Wheels; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be ai'ull, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification and represents, in-
Figure 1, a perspective view of the upper die; Fig. 2, a perspective view. of the lower die; and in Fig. 3, a perspective view of the biank produced by this die.
This invention relates to an improvement in forging top plates of fifth-wheels for carriages, such as are known to the trade as the Derby fifth-wheel, and which are constructed with projections upon the upper side to receive the head-block. These ends have heretofore been forged and wrought by hand, a laborious and expensive operation.
The blank is shown in Fig. 3, a a being the two projections, forming a space, A, between, into which the head-block'sits. One end, B, is then drawn out into any desired form for the forward ends of the plate, usually of some ornamental form. The other end, C, is welded to the top plate of the fifth-wheel, one of these blanks being used for each end of the top plate. The object of this invention is to construct this blank at a single blow, greatly reducing the expense of manufacturing this part of the carriage. 1) is the lower die, which is formed with a straight groove, E, through the center, corresponding to the body of the blank. The upperdie F is formed with a groove through the center corresponding to the groove in the lower die to form the upper side of the blank, and in this groove two recesses, d, corresponding to the projections a, are made, so that when heated the bar is placed in the lower die and the upper die struck thereon, the metal will be thrownup into the recesses d in the upper die and form the projections a a on the blank, and also leave the two ends in proper form for drawing out and for attachment to the plate.
I claim as my invention- The die-blocks F D, with the cavities described, for the purpose of forging blanks for the top plates of fifth-wheels, as set forth.
DARIUS WILOOX.
