Be it known that l, Grimfoun C. Baucoox, a citizen of the .United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook` State ofv lllinois, have invented an lmprovement in Boxes and Methods of Making the Same, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representinglike parts.
This invention relates to wirebound and similar boxes, and is intended more particularly to provide a new type of box having various utilities which .will appear to those skilledin the art.
Among other objects, the invention provides a lbox having a top which is conveniently separable from the body of the box. The invention also comprises ya method of making boxes.
The character of the invention may be readily understood by reference to an illustrative embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

The blank of Figs. 1 and 2 comprises cleats 5, 6, 7 and 8 arranged in pairs, one pair for each side of the box, as shown in Fig. 2. The blank also comprises three side sheets 9, 10 and 11; and binding wires 12 secured preferably by staples straddling the binding wiresand passing through the three side sheets and into their corresponding cleats, and also preferably secured ltothe cleats 8, 8. The cleats and side-sheets are preferably arranged to provide overlap-margins as, for instance, the overlap-margins 15, 16 on the side sheet 10 which, when the blank ,is folded, becomes the bottom of the box as "shown in Fig. 4, these overlap-margins ei abling the bottom 10 of the box to overlap the edges of the front side 9 and the rearI side 11.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the binding wires 12 are secured directly to the cleats 8, 8 without the intervention of any side material. f
In accordance with a preferred method, the illustrative blank may be made by assembling the cleats 5, 6 and 7 with the pieces of 9 and 6,1() and 7, 11, and drives the staple astride the wires and directly into the cleats 8. 8.
In following this preferred method, 'it is convenientto provide for the fourth side or top 18 of the box, and for this purpose side material 18 may be assembled with the other parts so that its upper surface shall be in lsubstantially the plane of the upper surfaces ofthe side material 9, 10 and 11 and also the upper surfaces of the cleats 8, 8. Preferablyv simultaneous stapling operations are performed 4by which the wires 12, 12 are attached to the box, other wires 20', 20, in any `desired, number, are stapled or otherwise secured to the various pieces of side. material preferably throughout the length of the blank, including the side material 18.
Between the adjacent edges of the side material 11 and side material 18, a substantial space is left so as to provide separable lengths of the wires 20, 2O which may be severed at the points 21, 21 to provide ends to be twisted together in finally closing the box.
At the left hand end of the blank shown in Fig. 2 are provided wire ends 23, 28 and 24, 24 and beyond the cleats 8, 8 project wire ends 25, 25. Projecting from the side material 18 are wire ends 26, 26. lVhen the wires 20, 2O are severed at 21, 21, there remain projecting wire ends 27, 27 and 28, 28,
When a blank comprising the parts shown in Fig. 2 has been completed, the wires 20, 20 are severed at 21, 21, and the side material 18 and its attached wires 20, 2O are rein'oved and set aside. Thereupon the remaining parts of the blank may be folded into box form and provided with ends 30 preferably placed inside of the cleats at each end of the box and secured to the cleats by staples 31 (as shown in Fig. 3) or otherwise. When the blank has been thus folded and the ends inserted, the ends 23, of the `wires 12 are twisted together as shown in Fig. 4. Thereby is formed a box having front and rear sides and a bottom, four cleats at each end, and the end pieces 30, all of the parts being secured together and wire-bound by the Wires 12, 12, the continuity of which encircling the box has been completed by twisting together the wire ends 23, 25. The box so formed has, however, no top. .Preferably the top faces of the cleats 8, 8 (in Fig. 4) and the edges 33, 33 of the front 9 and rear 11, all lie in the same plane, while the tcp edge 34.- (see Fig. 3) of each end piece 30, is spaced from the top surface of the cleat 8 a distance substantially equal to the thicknessof the top side material 18. With this arrangement, the top or lid 18 may be counter-sunk into the space Vbetween the cleats 8, 8 and the margins of the front 9 and rear 11, and so top 18 may rest upon the end pieces 30.4 When the top has been placed in position, the wire ends 27, 28 may be twisted together at the rear of the lid, and the wire ends 24, 26 mayD be twisted together at the front of the lid to complete the continuity of the wires 20, 20 encircling the bex.
Preferably the staples for the wires 12, 12 and staples 31 forholding the end pieces to the cleats, are all blind clenched in the cleat material; and the staples for the wires 20, 20 are preferabl driven through the side sheets and clenclied,all as illustrated in Fig. 3. n K
There are many advantages in a box blank, and a box, and a box-making method embodying this invention, which will appear to those skilled in the art. For instance, an open top box may be provided, which has very substantial rigidity and strengthI (even before the lid or cover 18 is assembled with the other parts) because of the cleat material at the ends contributing substantial stiness and the preferablycontinuous Wire bindings extending around the cleats and the front, bottom and rear sides. Such an open top box lends itself very advantageously to use by manufacturers of tin cans, who may pack the empty cans in the open top box; then place on lid and merely temporarily hoolgf the lid, securing the wire ends together sufficiently to hold the lid in place. The empty cans in the box are so light that no substantial intertwisting of the wire ends is necessary. A box so loaded may then be shipped to the canner, who can ver readily open the box, remove the cans, ll them, label them and return them to the same `box, thereafter twisting the Wire ends 24, 26 and 27, 28 securely together for closing the box for shi ment of the then heavierl contents. The act that the lid of the box is separable entirely from the box permits the lids to be kept always in the shipping room or other convenient place while the body of the box alone, and without any attached lid, is being sent through the factory to receive its contents.
It is to be understood that this invention is not limited to the specific construction and organization of blank and box described above for illustration, nor to the particular method described. On the contrary, the invention may be variously embodied and practised, and the several details described above may be variously modified all within the scope of the subjoined claims. The word box, as used in the claims, is not to be construed as a term of limitation since it is intended to include various packing cases and other receptacles to which 'the invention is applicable called boxes. Claims: 1. raforesaid parts being secured together in Vholding the parts permanently in fixed relationship to form an open top box; and a separatelid, and means for securing the lid in position.
10. A box comprising, in combination, side material and cleats for three sides of the box; additional cleats for the fourth side of the box; wire binding encircling said parts and securing them in position to form an open top box; a separate lid and means for securing the lid in position.

A box comprising, in combination, side material and cleats for three sides of the box; additional cleats for the fourth side of the box; wire binding encircling said parts and securing them in position to form an open top box;and additional wire binding to secure the lid in position 12. A box comprising, in combination, cleated side material for three sides lof the box; cleats for the fourth side of the box; wire binding encircling the box and secured to the side material of said three sides and also the cleats thereof, and secured also to said additional cleats, and holding the box firmly in position to form an open top box; additional wire binding secured to the side material for said three sides; and a separate lid having wire binding corresponding to said additional wire binding, and .whereby the wire binding of the lid and said additional wirel binding of the other sides may be secured together to hold the lid in place.
13. A foldable box blank comprising, in combination, a plurality of sidesections comprising side material and cleats; a side secn tion having cleats alone; Vand means foldably connecting the several side sections whereby the blank may be folded to form an open top box. l

A foldable box blank comprising, in combination, a plurality of sides each comprising side material and cleats; a side comprising sectional cleats alone; wire binding connecting said sectional cleats and the other parts of the blank, the blank as a whole being foldable to form an open top box having cleats extending across the open top.
15. A foldable box blank comprising, in combination, a plurality of sides comprising side material and cleats; a side comprising cleats alone; wirey binding extending along the cleatsl of all the sides and secured to said cleats, and flexibly connecting all the parts together, whereby the blank may be folded to form an open top box having cleats extending across the open top.
16. A foldable box blank comprising, in combination, a plurality of sides comprising side material and cleats, said side material being secured to said cleats; wire binding` foldably yconnecting the cleated sides; and an additional side comprising cleats and side material separate from said cleats.
17. A foldable box blank comprising, in, combination, aplurality of sides comprising cleats and side material; wire binding foldably connecting said sides; an additional side comprising cleats and side material separate from said cleats; and wire binding for said last named cleats and side material respectively, connecting the same respectively with the other sides of the box.
18. A method of making boxes which comprises assembling side material and cleats for a plurality of sides of the box; assembling cleats alone for an additional side of the box; securing all said parts foldably together; and folding them into open top box form.4 l

A method ofmaking boxes which comprises assembling side material and cleats for a plurality of sides of the box; assembling cleats alone for an'additional side of the box; securing said parts together by wire binding secured to the cleats for thet various sides f the box; folding the same into the form of an open top box; and completing the continuity of the Wire binding to hold the parts in theformof an open top p same plane; assembling cleatsi for an addin tional side of the box with the upper surfaces of said cleats in substantially the plane of the upper surface of the said side material; and securing wire binding to the upper surface of the first mentioned sides and to said additional cleats.

A method of making boxes which comprises assembling in the fiat cleats and side material for a plurality of sides of the box; assembling cleats and side material for an additional side of the box; securing .Wire binding to both the side material, and cleats for said first named plurality of sides, and securing wire binding to the cleats alone for said additional side; securing additional Wire binding to the side material alone for said first named plurality of sides, and to the side material alone for said additional side; folding the box into open top box form; completing the continuity of the wire secured to the cleats` to hold the parts in open top box form; and separately securing in place the side material for said additional side of the box.

A method of making boxes which comprises assembling in the flat cleats and. side material for a plurality of sides of the box; assembling cleats and side material for an additional side of the box; securing wire binding to hold the side material rand cleats for said first named plurality of sides; securing Wire binding to the cleats alone for said additional side; securing additional wire binding to the side material alone for all said sides of the box; separating the side material forl`-` said additional side, from the said parts of the box,'to form a separate lid; and folding the remaining p arts of the box into the form of an open top box.
23. A box comprising, in combination, front, bottom and rear sections, each including cleats'and side material, connected by Wire bindings extending along said sections and secured by staples passing through the side material and into the cleats thereof,
cleats corresponding to the fourth side of the box connecting the front and rear cleats adjacent their tops to assist in holding the structure in form and a separate lid having binding wires for connection with binding Wire on the body of the box.
24. A box comprising, in combination, front, bottom and rear sections each including cleats and side material, cleats corresponding to the fourth sideof the box, end members secured to the cleats, a separate lid for the box closing the fourth side and Wire bindings encircling the box, certain at least thereof being secured by staples passing through the side material -andinto the cleats of said front bottom and rear sections and being tensioned over the box corners.
25. A Wirebound box-blank comprising side material for the box sides, foldably related cleats and binding Wires, the side material and cleats for three sides of the box being connected together, and the side material and cleats for the fourth side being unconnected together.
26. A wirebound box comprising cleats outlining the ends of the box; side material for three sides of the box; the cleats corresponding to the fourth side of the box being unattached to side material; and binding Wires extending around the cleats at the ends of the box.

A Wirebound box comprising cleats outlining the ends of the box; side material for three sides of the box; the cleats corresponding to the fourth side of the box being unattached to side material; and binding Wires securing together the three sides of' the box and the cleats corresponding to the fourth side.
28. A Wirebound box comprising, in combination, side. material and cleats for three sides of the box; additional cleats corresponding to the fourth side of the box; end pieces inside the cleats; the parts being secured together in box form independently of side material for the fourth side; and binding Wires connecting the material for the three sides of the box and corresponding cleats.
29. A Wirebound box 'comprising side material and cooperating cleats for three sides of the box connected by binding Wires unaer tension; additional cleats unattached to side material, said additional cleats interlocked With the cleats for opposite sides adjacent the fourth side of the box; and end closures secured to said cleats.

A Wirebound box comprising side material and coperating cleats for three sides ofthe box connected by binding wires under tension;` additional cleats unattached to side material, said additional cleats interlocked with the cleats for opposite sides adjacent the fourth side of the box; and end closures secured to said cleats; a lid; and binding Wires on the lid; there being provision for completing continuity of binding Wires on the body of the box with binding Wires on` the lid.
31.`A boX comprising, in combination, three side sections each comprising side material and cleats; additional cleats for the fourth side of the box unattached to side material; and wires connecting said sections and attached to said additional cleats to hold the structure securely in box forni independently of a lid.

A box comprising, in combination, three side sections each comprising side material and cleats; additional cleats for' the fourth side of the box unattached to side material; and Wires attached t0 cleats of said sections and connecting said sections and attached to said additional cleats to hold the structure securely in box form independently of a lid.
38. A box comprising, in combination, three side sections each comprising side material andcleats; additional cleats for the teria] and cleats of said sections and con' nectipg said sections and attached to said additional cleats to hold the structure securely in box form independently of a lid.
3l. A wirebound box comprising cleats outlining the ends of the box; side material for three sides of the box; cleats corresponding to the fourth side of the box being unattached to side material; and binding Wires attached to cleats and extending around the cleats at the ends of the box.

A method of making boxes which comprises. assembling side material and cleats for a plurality of sides of the box; assembling cleats alone for an additional side of the box; securing all said parts foldably together with wires attached to side material and cleats of said plurality of sides; and folding said parts into open top box form.
