To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. Resin, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beet-Harvesters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved beet harvester and the principal object of the invention is to provide a beet harvester having improved topping means.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the topping means that they may be vertically adjusted to out the tops from the roots at the proper point and leave the tops upon the ground.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this machine that the topping means may be adjusted or rendered inoperative if so desired.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this improved machine that the controlling means for adjusting the topping means and the means for guiding the machine may be located adjacent the drivers seat where they may be conveniently reached.
Another object of the invention is to provide a beet harvester which will have a strong and durable construction.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the improved beet topping means in side elevation,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the improved machine,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the improved machine,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the topping mechanism.
The frame or carriage of this machine is provided with side bars 10 and end bars 11 and 12 and is braced by cross bars 13 and 14 and diagonal bars 15. The forward supporting wheels 16 are mounted upon the forward truck 17, the axle 18 for mounting the forward wheels being engaged by the rod 19 leading to the foot treadle 20 through the medium of which the rod may be moved to guide the machine. wheels 21 are rotatably mounted by stub axles 22 positioned in bearings 23.
The topping knife 54 is carried by side bars 55 pivotally connected with the side bars 10 as shown at 56. The rear end portions of these side bars are engaged by the Specification of Letters Patent.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A beet harvester comprising a frame, a topping knife including side arms pivotally connected with the frame, hanger arms extending from the side arms of the topping knife and having the upper end poring from the rocker shaft and terminating in forks, pins carried by the hanger arms for engaging the forks, springs connecting the end portions of the hanger arms With the arms of the rocker shaft, and means for rotating the rocker shaft to swing the arms thereof vertically and adjust the hanger arms to raise and lower the topping knife.
2. A beet harvesting machine comprising aframe, a topping knife including side arms pivotally connected With the frame, means for vertically adjusting the topping knife, levers pivotally connected with the side arms of the topping knife, a roller positioned in front of the topping knife, links connecting the roller with the levers, means for moving the levers to adjust the roller, a second set of links connected with the roller, and means connected with the second set of links for vertically adjusting the roller and suspending the roller in a vertically adjusted position through the medium of the second set of links.
3. A beet harvester comprising a frame, a toppingknife including side arms pivotally connected With the frame, hanger arms extending from the side arms of the topping knife, a rocker shaft, arms extending from the rocker shaft and terminating in forks, pins carried by the hanger arms for engaging the forks, and means for rotating the rocker shaft to swing the arms thereof vertically and adjust the hanger arms to raise and lower the topping knife.
