MEANS FOR CUTTING OFF WATER FROM LOWER STRATA OF DRILLED WELLS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLASS. SIBERT, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Savonburg, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Cutting Off Water from Lower Strata of Drilled Wells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for cutting off water, gas or oil from the lower strata of a drilled well, in the event that the drilling operation has been continued to such an extent as to penetrate strata below that from which it is desired to permit the water or oil to flow.
The invention consists in certain novel I means hereinafter described for placing an obstruction such as a plug of compressible material at the desired point to shutoff the flow in the manner described.
In the drawings, Figure '1 is a vertical section through the device in operative position.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.- Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line 44 of the same figure.
Fig. 5 shows another form, in vertical section.
In carrying out my inventionI employ a plug of compressible material designated 10,
this plug being bound with. wire 12 at the lower end and also being bound with wire at the upper end as shown at 13. The plug may be of rubber and it is provided with a central bore 14.
A pipe section 15 is provided with an upper flanged portion 16 internally threaded -.as shown at 17 for receiving an externally threaded head 18, this head being provided with a bore 19. Within the pipe 15 is a smaller pipe 22 threaded at its upper end and engaging threads in the bore 19 of the head 18. Y i
A device termed a spear and including a head 25 is provided with a shank 26 the lower end of which is provided with cutaway portions 27 of the form shown, the head 25 being also cutaway in the manner indicated, the cutaway portions last mentioned being designated 28. '-Within cutaway portions 27 and 28 are freely mounted engaging devices 30 whichmay be termed dogs and which are provided with toothshaped portions 31, these portions enga ing the walls of the inner tube 22 and the ogs Specification, of Letters Patent.

located Within the head of the spear engagmg weh bore designated 33.
he elements are forced downwardly, compressing the rubber and causing the latter to expand and to be retained in position within the bore, the dogs above described engaging the adjacent surfaces of the tube 22, and of the well bore at a point opposite head 2-5, and retaining the entire construc- 'tion positively in the desired position for shutting off the flow of Water, oil, or gas from the lower strata orstratum which has member, a head connected therewith, saidhead being positioned adjacent to the lower end of the plug, a spear including-a shank portion and a head engaging the upper end of the plug, and means for forming a posi-- tive connection between the shank of the spear and the tube connected with the head first named, the head engaging the upper end of the plug being provided with recesses, and freely movable clamping elements within said recesses, for preventing the upward movement of the structure speci- I fied.
2. In a device of the class described, a plug comprising a compressible member aving a longitudinal bore, a lower tubular member, a head connected therewith, said head being positioned adjacent to the lower end of the plug, a spear including a shank portion and a head enga 'ng the upper end of the plug, and means or forming a ositive connection between the shank o the spear and the tube connected with the head first named, the shank being provided with cutaway portions for receiving said means last mentioned, the head engaging the upper end of the plug being provided with recesses, and freely movable clampmg elements within said recesses, for preventing the upward movement of the structure specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
NICHOLAS S. SIBERT.
