MOUNTING-commit.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1919.
Application led July 14, 1919. Serial No. 310,851.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it knownthat I,YLEsTER S. ItiLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenwood, county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mounting-Corners, of. which the following is a specification.
In the mounting of lphotogrziphapostcards and the like, whether in albums or on other surfaces, it has been proven highly desirable to have the print yet rmly without that finality which mounting by means of paste renders unavoidable. Corner mounting has proven to be a very satisfactory manner of effecting this result and various systems and devices v'have been provided for holding 'the print forming and self-attaching making them b' the corner.
The problem of providing an artistic and effective mount in a simple and commercial form is not simple as the requirements are varied and practical difficulties attend each requirement.
The object of my present ,invention is to provide corner mounts which will fulfil a maximum number of these requirements with a minimum of diiliculty and all at a low cost, making the articlepractically available for general use.
The advantages eected by` my 'invention ,are briefly as follows:
By it I provide individual corner pockets upon any partof a page or mount.` Their utility is therefore general as they may be attached to any surface without previous preparation of it as a mount. The devices in accordance with my invention' may be produced from ready gummed stock, being so devised that in folding they become selfl.complete units and permanent fixtures..
In accordance y with my invention it is l also possible to produce these units in group sets so that they may be conveniently han dled and so that sets in varied colors may be had without .confusion and without delay u incident to sorting.
These and various g prominently characteristic of my invention. As illustrative of it I have shown in the accompanying drawings have foundhighly successful for practical use and which I will describe in detail in held lightly and it is not intended "other features areV vis struck from glued a form which I II a plan view of a corner unit. Fig. III a group set of units.
Fig. IV an indicated section on the linev IV-IV, Fig. II. v
Fig. V- an enlarged section through corner on the line V-V, Fig. I, and
Fig. VI a general view of a corner folded. Referring now to the corner unit herein employed as illustrative of my invention, it will be seen by-reference to Fig. II that each corner unit consists of a flat paper stamping `comprising a'somewhat V-shaped exposed section 1. Theshape is generally that of a right triangle being notched or cut out at 2.
On the equilateral sides of the piece 1 I form two flaps, one a preferably square Hap indicated at '3 and the other a triangular flap indicated at 4. The triangular flap is preferably similar to the section 1 except that it is not notched or cut out. The ap 3 is referablyy twice the area of the flap 4:, the ap 4 being really the triangular half of the area 'divided on its diagonal.
The flap 3-is also scored lightly at d, e I
leaving an area 31 as indicated in Fig. VI to bring a small area of gummed surface next to the'back of the mount or photograph P where it is dewhich may be folded back sired to give some permanence of attache.y
ment between the corner and the print. This -is sometimes desirable where the corners are folded on'the print first orwhere to remove the print. vIt may be here noted that while the flaplaffords considerable permanencyof attach- 'ment so that the print or photograph is not easily dislodged from the corner, itis still possible without destroying the photograph to peel it loose from the corner 31 by drawing back the corner of the print which thus rolling strips ofi' the gummed corner 31 with the practical certainty that the print be destroyed or in iure las shown in Fig. II stock and may be" considered `as lying in Fig. II lgumined side up. The upper surface of the flaps 3 and 4l are therefore gumined surfaces. The sur face of the corner or exposed portion 1 was originally a gummed surface but .in striking The corner blank out these blanks I preferably print the surture of its gumming so that the surface is v necessary to ma VISIS no longer sticky and will not attach to an opposite page in case an album is used.
also preferably embossed making the exposed portion highly attractive and adding to it considerable rigidity and decreasing possibility of tearing when the corner of the print is inserted.
Eachv corner unit is preferably scored along the lines -b, b -e, and the section 31 is also scored along the line 2l-e. This permits the corners to be folded with rapidity and certainty.
In folding the flap 3 is 'preferably folded first and the ila 4 turned over it as indicated in Fig.'l Where it is desired to simply stick the corner on the mount and then insert the e one moistening of' the flaps thus folded inasmuch as the surface of the flap 4 only covers half of the surface of the flap 3. y
Where itis desired to attach the corner to the print the contacting surfaces of the flap 4 and the flap unlted giving the form w ich may be desired.
As heretofore sort are used in different colors, l itis important that these sets be kept together to avoid the necessity of sortmg and to give convenience in handling.
In accordance with my inventionI am able to produce my corner in set groups as indicated in Fig. III. It will be noted that this set group is a rectangular group from which only four small notches are struck out as waste. A' group may therefore be produced from a continuous strip of the proper width. ,In order that thf'corner units may be readily detachable and yet that the group as a whole may remain together I partially sever the set blank into its corner units alon the lines of demarcation of .the unit b anks which I have indicated in Fig. ted line, as distinguished from the dotted and dash line whlch indicates the line of fold at a-b, b-c, d-e. This line of semidetachment may readily be traced in Fig. III, being practically four right angular arms radiating from the center in the form of the well known swastika symbol.
, While I do not limit myself to the particular form of corner shown or' to theparticular s et group, it will be appreciated that corner the permanenrl utillzecl afterward as pointed out articles of this sets usually of four. Where The corner 1 in additionto the printing isl rint afterward it is onlyv 3 may be permanently designs and effects are used III, by dotp the other.
l/Vhile I have shown and particularly de scribed in this application this highly developed form with its various advantages above explained, I am not to be understood as limiting myself to any one of the speciic 'features or combinations of features thus described except as hereinafterward defined by my claims.
What I therefore claim and desire to se4 cure by Letters Patent is:
1. An article and a triangular flap foldably attached to of the class described comprismg a corner piece, a rectangular Hap the margins thereof, said flaps having gummed backs.
',2. An article of the class described comprismg a corner piece of substantially triangular shape, a rectangular flap and a triangular iap foldably attached to the margms thereof, said iiaps having gummed backs.
3. An article of the class described comprising a substantially V-shaped corner p1ece,a rectangular iiap and a triangular Hap foldably attached to the margins thereof, said flaps having gummed backs.
An article of the class described comprising a flat blank gummed on the back and-including an exposed part and foldable iiapl parts, the gummed surface of the exposed part being printed whereby the exposed surface isrendered non-adhesive.
5. An article of the class described comprising a -fiat vblank gummed on the back and including an exposed part and foldable flap parts', t e gummed surface of the exposed part being treated to^render it nonadhesive.
6. An article of the class described comprising a flat blank gummed on the rback and including a substantially triangular front part, and foldable flaps, the gummed surface of the front non-adhesive by printm article of manufacture consisting of a blank containing 'a set of detachable units, each part being rendered one-fourth the area-of the comprising a front area and a palr of flap areas, saidunits being partially blank, said units being partially severed.
from each other in the blank group.
9. An article of manufacture consisting of a substantially rectangular blank containing a set of units, each comprising a rectangular area and a pair of triangular areas each of one-half the area of the square, said units being partially severed from each other in the blank group.
10. A mount of the class described, comprising a c orner receiving pocket, and a fold- -able portion having a gummed surface adapted to `be disposed outwardly for attachment to the article to be mounted.
11. As a new article of manufacture and sale, a gummed sheet scored along predetermined lines of severance to produce alurality of similar corner receiving po ets for mounting a photograph or the like.
12. A series of detachable mounts for a photograph or the like, formed from a sheet of material gummed on one face, said mounts being partly severed each from the other in said sheet.
