' iim iums'tsmnfln w CONSTRUCTION;
messes,
is a specification.
My invention relates to manure 'spreader body construction i The object of the invention isto obtainfa decrease in' weight. andin complexity of structure, and in the time required for assembling the parts, whilemaintaining the necessary strength an d' rigidity of the'body, and to generally improve the construction and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and The invention is illustrated in preferable form in the accompanying drawings, 111 which Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of a manurespreader; Fig. 2, an enlarged cross section through one of'the sides; Fig. 3, an enlarged side elevation of a means of attaching the sides to the cross sill; Fig.4, a section of such means; Fig. 5, adetail perspective of the attaching 'andgbolt relieving strap at the front end of'the body; Fig. 6, a vertical section showing two 'modified forms of standards adapted to obtain the bolt and nut relieving functions; Fig. 7, a detail side view of another form of standard that may be employed in connection with the continuous wooden side in lieu of the bolt protecting plate'shown in Figs. 3 and 4;
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the rear wheels of the manure spreader and 2, the front wheels thereof. The front wheels are adapted to support a frame 3 projected resisting sill elements possessing as an entirety the stiffening strength and resistance of the ordinary large additional sill and having such stress resisting capacity distributed vertically and uniformly from top to bottom of the structure and also constituting in themselves the necessary inclosmg v I .IQ' Specification of Letters. - side body for the carrier. The thickness of these elements is between that of the thickness of the ordinary inclosing side board and that of the sill ordinarily employed when the same is of wood. All of the elements are of the same thickness, thus providing a side of uniform cross section from top to bottom.
()n each side of the body are secured, as 1s customary, vertical wooden standards 5, which are bolted to the side elements. The lowermost side member of each sill is also secured to the end of a crosssill 6, and in cooperation with the relatively thin pine section constituting this membenas compared with the usual metal or heavy wooden sill, special means are provided for relieving the shearing action on the bolts and protecting the side section against splitting and the cutting through of the bolt nuts under the strain of the vertical, lateral andtwisting strains applied thereto through the cross sill. To this end, a small metallic plate 6 is inserted between the standard and side, the bolts 7 passing through the lower part of the standard and the side and other bolts 7 having nuts 8, passing through the plate and engaging angled metal bracket 8' on the end of the cross sill, so asto thereby rigidly secure the sides to the cross sill, without danger of cutting or splitting the side. Owing to the fact that the plates are also bolted to the standard the shearing strain on the bolts 7 and the sides is relieved.
At the front end of each side a vertical metallic strap 9 is provided which is bolted to the side and the lower end 10 of which is bent at a right angle to its vertical length and takes under and clamps against the lower side edge of the lowermost side member, while the upper end is similarly bent and takes over the bar 11 of the frame 3 which is supported from the axle of the front 7 wheels.
These parts thus cooperate with the continuous all wooden sides in holding them firmly to the cross sills, and preventing splitting thereof.-
In Fig. 6, modifications of or substitutes for the means for preventing the splitting and cutting actions of the bolts and nuts, associated with the standard, is shown. On
the side to the left hand of the figure is a flat straight metal standard 12 having parallel sides having the attaching bolts passing therethrough and through the side and cross sill bracket. This standard is provided with an angle head 13 taking over the upper edge face of the side, and with an angle foot bent under the lower edge of the side and thereby adapted to take the strain from the bolts. At the right hand side a similar metal standard 15 is shown, but provided with merely an angled sup porting member 16 at the lower end.
In Fig. 7 .another modified form of standard is illustrated in which 17 indicates a metal channeled standard and 18 a bolt and nut guard plate'through which the side and cross sill connecting bolts pass.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a manure spreader, in combination with a body having a wooden side and sill unit of uniform thickness from top to bottom, a wheel supported front frame, a metallic supporting front strap for said unit having an angled head taking over the frame and an angled foot taking under the lower edge of said unit.
2. In a manure spreader in combination with a body having a combination sill and side unit, a vertical standard secured thereto, a metallic plate disposed between said standard and said sill and side unit, a cross-sill, a metal bracket adapted to receivesaid cross-sill, and means for securing said sill and side unit, metal plate and bracket together, substantially as set forth.
- 3. In a manure spreader, in combination with a body having a side unit, a vertical standard bolted thereto, a plate carried by said standard and resting against said side unit, a cross-sill, an angular metallic bracket adapted to receive said cross-sill, means for securing the cross-sill to the bracket, and bolts securing said unit plate and bracket together, substantially as set forth.
4; Ina manure spreader, in combination with a body having'a combination sill and side unit of uniform thickness of a plurality of vertical standards bolted thereto, a cross sill, a bracket for supporting said cross sill, a plate intermediate the lower portions of said standards and the sill portion of said side unit, bolts extending through said standards, plates, and sill unit, bolts extending through said plates, sin and bracket, means for securing said cross sill to said bracket, a wheel supported front frame, and a metallic supporting front strap for said unit having an angled head taking over said frame and an angled foot taking under the lower edge of said unit.
5. In a manure spreader, in combination with a body having a combination sill and side unit, a metallic plate on the outside of said side unit, a cross sill, a metallic bracket adapted to receive said cross sill, and means for securing saidsill, side unit, metallic plate,- and bracket together, substantially as set forth. 7 y a In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis this 23rd day of July, A. D. nineteen hundred and eighteen.
