IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.
v Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,555, dated October 29, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY P. ADAMS, of
Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Method of Packing Butter for transportation and preserving it in a marketable condition, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists, first, in packing butter for market in packages of one pound, more or less, in suitable thin wooden envelopes; and, second, in packing said packages in suitable air-tight boxes, hermetically sealed, and containing brine, whereby the butter is kept sweet and merchantable, and is safe and conis cut or split at one end, and has a slot, a,.
cut crosswise'in the other end. (Seen in Fig. 5.) In order to pack the butter in these envelopes, as seen in Fig. 3, a small square box is required, of suitable dimensions to hold a given quantity, say a pound, into which two of the thin pieces of wood A A are placed, taking first the one having the slit a and splits, Fig. 5, and bending it up at the two middle creases, and placing it in the aforesaid small box, the central part of said piece A lying on the bottom, the ends projecting upward out of the box; then taking another piece of thin wood, Fig. 4, bending and placing it in the box, lying crosswise ofthe first; then placing the required amount of butter inside of said box containing said thin pieces; then pressing and packing the butter down with a suitable follower; the ends of the second thin piece A are bent down and folded over the top of the butter; and, then, the first piece A is also bent down and the central part of the split end inserted in the slit a, confining the ends, and thus completing the package, which is then removed from the box, and resembles that seen in Fig. 3. In order to pack and preserve these small packages I provide a box, B,made strong and air-tight, having in the top a hand-hole for placing the small packages inside. These boxes may be of any required dimensions to contain one dozen or a gross of the small packages. I also provide a suitable cover, 0, for said box, which covers the hand-hole perfectly tight, through the center of which is a hole, 0,
havinga valve on the under side. In the said hole 0 is inserted a pipe, through which brine. is
forced, which surrounds all the packages, the. force of which also keeps the valve closed,
the hole 0 is also corked up tight; thus the case is hermetically sealed, and the contents Will be preserved for any length of time and may be readily transported to market, and when opened presents the contents sweet and in perfect marketable condition.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A butter-package composed of separate thin strips of wood A A, laid crosswise, folded around the butter, and secured at the ends, substantially as herein described.
2. The combination of the butter-packages A A with the box B constructed so as to be hermetically sealed, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
