DENTAL INSTRUMENT. f
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 16, 1919.
Application filed October 22, 1919. a Serial No. 332,398.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM WA soN, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and residlng at Glasgow, Scotland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dental Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is an instrument adapted for use in the performance of the operation of removing teeth and replanting the same in the patients mouth when crowned or otherwise treated, the object beobviate any occasion for handling the tooth root and thereby injuring the cells thereon.
An instrument according to the invention comprises an aseptic casing fitted with a root-clamping device operable from the exterior of the casing and provided with a rubber dam for closing the proximal end so as to shield the tooth.
According to a modification the casing is fitted with a graduated post on which is adjustably mounted an arm carrying a radially adjustable crown-engaging device by means of which the dimensions and position of the crown to be attached may be determined. According to a further modification the casing is provided at the distal end with a glazed aperture which may be fitted with a lens through which rays of light may be projected whereby the canal or canals may be viewed through the translucent tooth.
To protect the rubber dam during the sawing operation there may be removably fitted to the upper end of the casing a disk having a central aperture for passage of the tooth; interchangeable washers being also used, if desired. V
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is an elevation, Fig. 2 a section and Fig. 3 a plan.
As shown, the instrument comprises an aseptic casing 1 which is provided at the lower end with a removable closure 2 having an aperture in which is fitted a lens 3.
The casing 1 is fitted with a root-clamping device operable from the exterior of the casing, the device being constituted by a number of radially disposed screw-threaded pins 1 adapted to be adjusted radially so as firmly to clamp the tooth root 5.
To shield the tooth root when so engaged,
there is provided a rubber dam 6 for closing the proximal end of the casing 1, the dam being provided with perforations adapted to be threaded over the pins 4.
Fitted to the casing is a graduated post 7 which is preferably constituted by the adjustable element of a micrometer and on which is adjustably mounted an arm 8 also constituted by the adjustable element of a micrometer and carrying a radially adjustable crown-engaging device 8 by means of which the dimensions and position of the crown to be attached may be determined. ing to provide a construction such as to It is understood that, when a tooth has been removed, the root 5 is introduced into the aseptic casing and clamped in position.
The natural crown may then be removed as by sawing, for example, and the canal bored out and roughened, the canal being capable of inspection on application of a source of light to the lens 3. The artificial crown is then cemented in position, the clamp released, and the tooth with the artificial crown attached replanted in the patients moutha To protect the rubber dam 6 during the sawing operation or grinding operation there is removably fitted to the upper end of the casing 1 a disk 9 having a central aperture for passage of the tooth; interchangeable washers 10, fitting said central aperture and having central openings of different sizes or shapes, being also used, if desired. 11 denotes a holder for the casing 1.
The casing 1 is removably secured in the holder 11 by any suitable means, as by set screws, as shown.
In the use of the device herein described a newly extracted tooth to be treated is clamped in place by means of the pointed screws-4, as shown in Fig. 1, the root 5, extending into the aseptic casing 1, being protected by the rubber dam 6. The sawing, grinding or other operation 'is now performed as quickly as possible and the repaired tooth is then re-planted in the patients mouth.
I claim V 1. An instrument for use in the performance of the operation of removing, treating,
crowning and replanting teeth comprising, in combination, an aseptic casing adapted wholly to inolose a tooth-root and presenting a protective element for the cells thereon,
and clamping means operable from the exterior of said casing for holding said toothroot Without damage to the cells.
2. An instrument for use in the performance of the operation of removing, treating, crowning and replanting teeth comprising in combination, an aseptic casing, a rootclamping device operable from the exterior of said casing and a rubber dam for closing the proximal end of said casing so as to shield said tooth-root against damage to .the cells thereon. I
8. An instrument for use in the performance of the operation of removing, treating,
crowning and replanting teeth comprising, in combination, an aseptic casing adapted Wholly to inclose a tooth-root and exposing the crown of said root, clamping means operable from the exterior of said casing for holding the tooth without damage to the cells, a post on said casing, an arm adjustably mounted on said post and a radially adjustable crown-engaging device for determining the dimensions and position of said crown.
4. An instrument for use in the performance of the operation of removing, treating, crowning and replanting teeth comprising, in combination, an aseptic casing provided with a glazed aperture and adapted Wholly to inclose a tooth-root, and clamping means operable from the exterior of said casing for holding the said tooth-root without damage to the cells thereon.
5. An instrument for use in the performance of the operation of removing, treating, crowning and replanting teeth comprising, in combination an aseptic casing provided with an aperture and adapted Wholly to inclose a tooth-root, a lens in said aperture, and clamping means operable from the exterior of said casing for holding the tooth without damage to the cells.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
