UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID TREMBLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD T0 GUS BROWN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AND ONE-THIRD TO J. L. BROOKS, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
AUTOMOBILE-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID TRnMBLEr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of th city of Chicago in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Locks, of which the following is a specification. a
My invention relates to looks for automobiles and more particularly to a lock that will secure the vehicle in such manner that the same may be rolled or pushed along manually, in order to comply with certain municipal ordinances and at the same time prevent the operation bf the vehlcle by means of the motor and its associated parts. Specifically stated, my invention relates to a lock that is adapted to secure the clutch pedal or lever in a position in which the clutch is disengaged.
I prefer to accomplish the above and other objects of my invention by the means and in the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly polnted out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a sectional schematic view showing the relation of a dashboard and footboard of an automobile, with my lock installed thereon,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail of the keyway and the associated parts.
Fig. 3 is a similar sectional detail of the lock bolt and its associated parts.
In the drawings similar reference characters are employed to designate the same parts throughout the divers views. In the drawings the dashboard is indicated at A and the foot-rest at B, and the usual clutch pedal C protrudes through a suitable slot D in the footboard, so that it is adapted to operate therethrough in the usual manner. The clutch pedal in this instance is provided with a lateral lug c that is adapted to be engaged by the bolt of my lock so that when the pedal is pushed into the position shown in Fig. 1, the same may be locked so that the clutch is disengaged.
Referring now to Fig. 3, it will be observed the bolt portion of the lock preferably comprises a suitable metal barrel 5 that is bored out centrally and threaded as at 6 and is provided with a back plate 7 having screw openings for securing it to the footboard. A suitable bolt 9 having a thread- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec 16 1919, Application filed September 3, 1918.
Serial No. 252,443.
cured to the inner end of the. bolt within the barrel 5 and which is inclosed within a suitable flexible casing 13 that has its adjacent end secured to an L-shaped plate 11 and mounted upon the back-plate 7 of the barrel. The flexible shaft 12 and its casing 13 extend to and are secured upon the dashboard in the manner hereinafter described, and in order to lubricate the threaded portion of the barrel, a suitable provided. It may be found desirable to lock the bolt 9 after it has been projected beyond the end of the barrel and for this purpose I provide a transverse bolt 16 operated in the same manner as bolt 9 that can bepro jected into the barrel 5 after the inner end of the bolt 9 is passed beyond the bolt 16. The flexible shaft 17 for this locking'bolt is surrounded by a casing 18 and the whole structure is of much smaller dimensions than the bolt and easing heretofore described.
The opposite end of the flexible shaft 12 extends upwardly and into a suitable housing made in the form of a hollow sleeve 19 (Fig. 2), that has a flat circular flange 20 upon its outer end that fits against the front of the dashboard A. The exterior of this sleeve is threaded at 21 so'that a lock washer or nut 22 may be screwed thereon against the rear face of the dashboard opposite the plate 20, thereby securely looking the sleeve 19 is position. The interior of the sleeve 19 is provided with a bore 23 that isslightly reduced, as at 24, adjacent its inner end and this reduced portion is threaded exteriorly in order that the flexible casing 13 may be removably' secured thereto by an exteriorly threaded nipple 25, 'to which the adjacent end of the casing 13 is secured. The adjacent end of the flexible shaft 12 passes through the reduced portion oil cup 15 is 7 of the sleeve and is oined in any suitable manner hereinafter described and also to be drawn slightly inwardly asthe bolt 9 upon the opposite end of the flexible shaft is moved out of the barrel. In order to accomplish the rotation of the head '26, I have provided a suitable key 27 provided with projections 28 upon its inner end that are adapted to fit into depressions in the adjacent end of the head 26.
In the event'the supplemental locking bolt 16 is not employed or even when it is used, I find it desirable to provide means to prevent the rotation of the bolt 19., thereby avoiding the possibility of unauthorized persons attempting to rotate the bolt 9 by means of pliers or by the hand, and thereby retracting it and unlocking the clutch pedal. To this end I provide the sleeve 19 with a longitudinally disposed slot 29 and dispose therein-a flat leaf spring 30, and in the head 26 I provide oppositely disposed longitudinal grooves or channels 30 into which the spring is adapted to seat when the key is removed and a slot is in position to receive the suing. This will prevent the rotation of the head 26 and in order that this spring may be disengaged from the slots 30 during the locking and unlocking operations with the key, the spring is provided with a bulged or bowed portion 31, that is -adapted to be engaged by the globular embossinent 32 on the key so that when the key is forced into position, this enlargement will push the spring out of the slot 30 and keep it there du ing the locking operation. The moment the key is withdrawn the spring is again free to engage theslots when the bolt 9 has been rotated sufficiently to turn said slots into position to receive the spring.
In order to prevent tampering with the locking spring 30 and to keep the device free from dust, I provide a suitable :hollow cap or housing 83 that is secured by welding or otherwise, to the jamb-nut 22, so that it incloses the portion of the sleeve 19 projecting from the back of the dashboard A. and has its outer end flared inwardly and provided with an aperture through which the nipple 24 extends.
lVhile I have illustrated a specific manner of carrying out my invention, it, of course, will be obvious to others that modifications may be made without departing from the principle disclosed. For example, a-separate lock may be employed in lieu of the lock spring 30 or a rod may be used in places where the fieXible shaft would be unnecessary. I therefore desire it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise structure disclosed and obvious modifications are contemplated as within the scope of my invention as expressed in the appended claims.
What I claim as new is 1. In 'a lock forautom-obiles the combination with a movable clutch lever and pedal therefor, of a threaded bolt adapted to be projected into the path of movement of said lever, and internally threaded barrel in which said bolt is movably positioned, a flexible shaft operably connected to one end of said bolt, a sleeve into which the opposite end of said flexible shaft extends and provided with a longitudinal slot, a longitudinally channeled head secured to the end or said flexible shaft within said sleeve, a spring positioned in said slot and normally pressed toward said head and adapted to be seated in the channel therein, and a key adapted to rotate said head and provided with an-enlargement that engages said spring and positions the same out of said channel during the operation of the device, and neans for securing said sleeve to the dash board of the vehicle.
An automobile lock comprising the combination with a clutch lever, a bolt and casing adapted to be mounted transversely ofthe path Of-IHOVGIHBIH] of said lever, a fleX- ible shaft secured to said bolt, and means for operating said flexible shaft to project said bolt into and withdraw it from the path of said lever consisting of a channeled head, a springadapted-to engage a channel in said head, and a removable key adapted to disengage said spring and to actuate said head.
3. In a lock for motor vehicles the combination wita :a movable clutch lever, of a threaded bolt adapted to be moved into and out of the ,path of said lever, an internally threaded casing in which said bolt is mounted, a movable head provided with longitudinal channels, a sleeve in which said ieadis mounted and provided with a longitudinal slot, an elastic element operating in said slot and adapted to bepositioned in the channel of said head whereby the rotation of the latter is prevented, and means :for rotating said head provided with an element adapted to move said'elastic element out of said channel during the rotation of said head.
Signed at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, this 31st day of August,
DAVID 'TREMBLEY. Witnesses H. SIACK, BENJ. T. Roonnonsn.
