To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANA Oscoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, in the county of Worcesterv and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Devices for Repairing Window- Screens, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to means for repairing screens.
\Vindow and other screens in use frequently become punctured or ruptured locally, and while the principal portion of the screen is uninjured, yet the effectiveness thereof is lost. As a consequence, it has been necessary in such contingency to replace the slightly injured screen by a new screen.
The purpose of the present invention, therefore, is to rovide simple and efficient means as an article of manufacture for repairing injured screens and restoring the same to efficient, useful condition, that the life of the screen may be prolonged and the expense of purchasing new screens may be eliminated.
The character of the invention will be best understood by reference to the following description of embodiments of the invention shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of a window screen repaired by means embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale is a plan of a screen patch having attaching devices embodying the invention;
Fig. 3 is a view of a portion of the screen cloth having a patch such as shown in Fig. 2 applied to the screen cloth to cover a break therein;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a patch having attaching devices differing in form from those shown in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the patch devices to be described may be applied to screens for varying purposes, but for the sake of illustrating the invention, a window screen is shown in Fig. 1 of usual construction comprising a frame 1 having a sheet of wire screen cloth 3 stretched on and secured to said frame. The screen cloth is represented as having a rupture 5 therein relatively small as compared to the total area of the screen cloth. Such -a rupture, however, is sufficiently large to allow insects to pass easily through the screen cloth, and thus the efficiency of the screen is lost.
Next will be described one good form of means embodying the invention for quickly and efiiciently repairing the ruptured screen. This means comprises a patch 7 of woven wire screen cloth, preferably, but not necessarily of the same gage wire and mesh as the screen cloth to be repaired. The patches may be of'difl'erent sizes according to the size of rupture to be repaired, but in practice it may be found convenient to manufacture the patches on a large scale in standard sizes, differing according to usual needs. The area of the patch selected should be sufficient to overlap substantially marginal portions of the screen cloth sur' rounding the puncture or rupture.
Suitable means may be provided for quickly and readily securing the patch to the screen cloth. It is essential that the patch shall be securely connected tothe screen cloth with the margins of the patch in intimate engagement with the marginal portions of the screen cloth surrounding the puncture or rupture, and there should be no ragged ends of wires or patching devices projecting outward from the face of the screen cloth to catch on articles which may come in contact therewith. With these conditions in mind, attaching means may be provided 'comprising wires 9 interwoven with the wires of the patch. To prevent the attaching wires from slipping longitudinally of th wires relatively to the patch, they may be formed to present one or more eyes 11 looped about one or more wires of the patch extending transversely to the attaching wires. These attaching wires may have ends 13 projecting beyond the margins of the patch a substantial distance, and of a length sucli that they may be interwoven with wires of the screen cloth adjacent the puncture or rupture. In some cases the weaving of these projecting portions with the screen cloth may be'suificient to secure the patch in position, but in other cases it may be desirable to loop the projecting portions about a wire or wires of the screen cloth. In the present instance, the projecting portions are shown with the terminals of their projecting ends bent to present hooks or loops 15 embracing wires of the screen cloth. Under certain conditions'it may suflice to employ two attaching wires, preferably in parallel relation at opposite margins of the patch to secure the sam to the screen cloth, while under other conditions, it may be desirable to employ attaching Wires at all four margins of the patch. These attaching wires not only constitute simple and effective means for quickly and easily securing the patch to the screen cloth to be repaired, but they also constitute in a sense selvage ribs at the margins of the patch furnishing desirable reinforcement thereto, and tend to prevent unraveling of the wires of the patch at the edges thereof.
In Fig. a is shown a. patch provided with attaching means differing somewhat from the attaching means already described, and comprising short attaching wires 17 which may he interwoven with the wires of the patch or may be bent to present eyes 19 looped about certain wires of the patch to properly connect the attaching wires with the patch. These wires may have end portions 21 which may be interwoven with or looped or hooked about Wires of the screen cloth adjacent the puncture or rupture. A plurality of these attaching devices may be appliedto a margin of the patch at inter-' vals, and the end portions thereof need not extend beyond the margins of the patch.
To secure the patch tothe screen cloth, it is merely necessary to insert the end portions of the attaching. wires through the meshes of the screen cloth overlapped by the patch, and then said end portions may be interwoven with or looped about the wires of the screen cloth. These attaching devices may be applied to as many points of the patch as may be necessary to secure the same in intimate engagement with the portions of the screen cloth covered by the patch. In some cases it may be desirable to apply these attaching devices to ragged points of the ruptured screen cloth, in order that these points may not bend outward away from the patch and present an unsightly appearance.
While the patches shown herein are rectangular and square in form, it will be apparent that the shape of the patches may be varied as desired.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiments shown, but that various deviations may be made therefrom, without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a woven wire screen, of a patch for a hole or rupture in said screen comprising woven wire screen material of sufiicient area to overlap margins of the screen surrounding the hole or rupture, and means to secure the patch to the screen comprising supplemental attaching wire interwoven with the patch to prevent longitudinal movement of the attaching wires with respect to the patch and adapted to be interwoven with the margins of the screen surrounding the hole or rupture intimately to secure said margins to the patch.
2. As an article of manufacture, a device for repairing screens comprising a patch of woven wire, supplemental attaching wires at edges of the patch and interwoven therewith to constitute reinforcing selvage ribs therefor, said attaching wires having ends projecting beyond the edges of the patch for connection with portions of a screen adjacent said patch.
3. As an article of manufacture, a device for repairing a hole or rupture in woven wire screen cloth, comprising a woven wire patch, and supplemental attaching wires connected to said patch and having portions projecting from the patch adapted for connection with portions of the woven wire screen cloth adjacent the hole or rupture therein intimately to secure the patch to the cloth.
