To all whom it may concern 'Be it knownthat I, HENDRIK DE CLERCQ, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, residing zit-Amsterdam, Netherlands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing lvlachines, of which the following is a specification.
In addressographs, the printing is effected by relief forms which by suitable means are pressed on the sheet to be printed, during veniences, the form and the sheet to be printed are simultaneously fed between two members rolling the one on the other, during which operation said members exert a certain amount of pressure on one another.

In Figs. 1 and 2, the reference numerals 1 and 2 designate two cylinders located the one vertically above the other. The top cylinder is rotatable about a spring loaded shaft, and by adjusting the tension of said spring the pressure between both cylinders may be regulated to suit the demand of the work in a manner well-known in the art.
The lower cylinder 2 is mounted on a shaft 3, and keyed on this shaft is a miter wheel 4 meshing with a miter wheel 5 on a manually or motor driven shaft 6. In practice, the shaft 6 is coupled with a mechaiism for feeding the forms in a continuous series to the impression cylinders 1 and 2.
The printing forms are fed in a continuous series along guide bars 7 and 8 extending along the sides of the cylinders and arranged adjacent the meeting point of the impression cylinders 1 and 2. By means of suitable Specification of Letters Patent.

ing its movement to the left, that is to say during the time wherein the shaft 18 assumes its highest position, so that the printr ing operation may be effected between the stationary block 11 and the moving cylinder 29. For this purposera reliefprint-ing form, together with the sheet to be printed, is manually or mechanically fed below the impression block 11 the moment wherein, or before, the cylinder29 begins to move to the left. hen the printing operation is finished, the cylinder 29 descends by gravity so that it moves at some considerable vertical distance from the block 11 during its movement to the right, when the form and the sheet, or only'the sheet as the case may be, may be removed and replaced.
In order to avoid damage to the sheet and to the form, the members rolling the one on the other, that is to say the block 11 and the cylinder 29, may be covered with suitable resilient material such as rubber or a sheet of rubber may be fed between said members together with the sheet to be printed and the form.
As a matter of course my invention may be applied both with low and with high relief forms.
hat I claim as my invention is:
1. In mechanism of the character described, a flat impression block and a reciprocable impression cylinderwhose shaft during its movement in the one direction is at a greater distance from the block than during its movement in the reverse direction, in combination with wheels loosely mounted on the shaft of the impression cylinder, springs tending. to force the said wheels apart, rails for guiding the wheels,
slanting surfaces adapted at the end of the movement of the impression cylinder in the one direction to push the wheels toward one another so as to cause their running surfaces to disengage the rails and concentric cylindrical wheel portions of smaller diameter resting on the rails and inclined surfaces adapted at the end of the reverse motion of the impression cylinder to bring the wheels back to their original level.

A mechanism of the class described comprising a plurality of parallel rails adapted to support a printing form, a pressure block adapted to exert pressure upon said form, a plurality of rails located below the v first rails and spaced apart, a bracket, a shaft supported by said bracket, a cylinder carried by said shaft, a roller mounted on said shaft on each side of the cylinder and having an outwardly extending boss, resilient means pressing the rollers away from said cylinder, guide members carried by the rails and adapted to engage .thebosses of the rollers when the shaft is moved in one direction for causing the rollers to move toward the cylinder and disengage the lower rails, inclined tracks adapted to be engaged by the rollers when the shaft is moved in the opposite direction for raising the rollers to a point sufliciently high so that said rollers will engage the lower rails, and means for reciprocating said bracket.
