To all whom it may concern:

a citizen of the United States, residing at- Chicago, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in End-Hold ers for the Roll-Covers of Lithographing.

Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will. en'- able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s, forming part of this specification.

y invention relates generally to the rolls of lithographing presses, and more particularly to devices which are arranged onthe l roll near the end thereof for securing and holding the ends of the fabric covers for said roll, and while my improved devices can be effectively used for securing and holding all forms of lithographing roll covers, they are particularly designed for securely holding the ends of the covers disclosed in United States Letters Patent No. 7

The present practice of bindingthe end of each roll cover with a heavy thread or cord and then running a drawstring or cord through the loops of the binding cord, 1nvolves considerable time and labor, and it is the primary object of my invention to provide a relatively simple and eii'icient device which can be easily and quickly applied to the end portion of a lithographing roll, said device being constructed and arranged so that the ends of the roll covers can be easily and quickly applied thereto and said holding device being efiective in very firmly securing the covers in proper position upon the roll and at the same time permitting the ready release of the end portions of the covers and the adjustment thereof in the event that such adjustment is necessary.

Further objects of my invention are, to provide a lithographing roll cover holder which can be easily and cheaply manufactured and which, when properly applied for use, in no wise interferes with the ordinary operations and functions of the roll to which it is applied.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangements of parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in'the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an clevational view of a lithographing press roll'having theusual fabric covers applied thereto and showing myimproved holding and securing means in position upon said roll.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a practical embodiment of myinvention, 10 designates the body of an ordinary roll used "in lithographing and embossing presses, said roll beingpreferably constructed of metal and provided at its ends with axially disposed outwardly projecting trunnions 11.

Arranged on the body of the roll is a series of layers of woven or knitted fabric 12, and it is the general practice to-construct these layers of covering material in tubular and thread and the end of each member drawn together against the trunnion 11 by passing a draw-string or the like through the binding cord or thread. 7

As heretoforev stated, this manner of securing the ends of the covers'involves con siderable time and labor, and by my improved fastening means, the ends of the covers can be very easily and quickly secured and held at the end of the roll body 10.

Myimproved holder comprises a body 13 of leather, rubber, fiber or metal and having a centrally arranged aperture lat of sufficient size to receive the trunnion 11. This body is preferably in the form of a ring or washer, as-shown in Fig. 2, although it may be of any desired shape, for instanceits outline, or periphery may be square, noncircular, or provided with a series of out wardly projecting points. Seated in the body of this ring or washer are the inner portions 15 of cover engaging members, preferably composed of short sections of re silient orductile wire. The outer portions of these members project laterally or outwardly from the outer edge of the member 13 and said projecting portions are bent to form outwardly presented hooks 16. These cover engaging members are preferably ar ranged at equal distances apart, and, therefore, they are radially disposed with respect to the axis of the body 13. In some instances it may be found desirable to alternate these hooks with curved pins 17 which project laterally or outwardly from the edge of body 13.

The holder thus constructed is positioned 011 the trunnion 11 of the roll with the hooks and pins outwardly presented, and after the tubular covers have been applied to the roll, the end portions thereof are successively engaged upon the hooks and pressed downwardly or inwardly thereupon until they are disposed immediately against the outer face of the body, as shown at the lefthand of Fig. 1.

It will be understood that in fitting the tubular covers onto the roll, they are drawn lengthwise upon said roll until they are taut and while in such condition, the end portions of said covers are pulled tightly over the hooks 16 and pins 17. A relatively strong binding cord or wire 18 is now passed around all of the projecting hooks and drawn tight, which action draws the outer ends of all of the hooks inwardly toward the adjacent trunnion and likewise inwardly toward the body 13 in which they are seated, therebv pressing and impinging the end portions of the covers against the outer face of the body 13 of the holder, with the result that the ends of all of the covers are firmly secured to the end of the roll body.

After the cord 18 has been wrapped several times around the exposed ends of the hooks 16 to secure the ends of the covers, the ends of said cord are tied together to retain the hooks and pins in their coverholding-positions.

A llOlCllRg device of my improved construction is very simple, and can be easily and cheaply manufactured, is very effective in firmly securing the ends of lithographing roll covers, and likewise is effective in saving much of the time and labor ordinarily required in securing the ends of covers to the rolls of lithographing presses.

It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved holding device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. Alithographing roll cover holder comprising a body portion adapted to be applied to the end portion of the roll, and cover engaging members seated in and projecting from said body portion.

2. A lithographing roll cover holder comprising a body portion adapted to be applied to the end portion of the roll, and cover engaging members seated in and projecting from said body portion, the outer portions of which cover engaging members are formed into hooks.

8. In a device of the class described, a base member adapted to be applied to the end portion of a roll, and cover engaging members projecting laterally from the outer edge of said base member.

4:. In a device of the class described, a base member adapted to be applied to the end portion of a dampin roll body, and a series of flexible cover engaging members seated in and projecting outwardly from said base member. 7

5. In a device of the class described, a base member adapted to be applied to the end portion of a damping roll body, and series of flexible hooks seated in and projecting outwardly from said base member.

6. A lithographing roll cover holder comprising a body portion adapted to be applied to the end portion of the roll, yielding members carried by and projecting from said body portion with which yielding portions the end portions of the roll covers are adapted to engage, and means for drawing the outer portions of said yielding members toward each other to grip the end portions of the engaging covers.

7. In a device of the class described, a base member adapted to be applied to the end portion of a roll, yielding hooks carried by said base member and adapted to be engaged by the end portions of the covers of the roll, and means for drawing said hooks inwardly toward each other to clamp the engaged portions of the covers against the base member.
