WITNESSES JOSEPH M.`WHITE, OF ST. JOHNSBURY, VIhlRltlQll'T.`
EGG-CASE.
Application filed May 22, 1917.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Egg-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved case for use in shipping frangible articles such as eggs or the like by parcel post, express or otherwise, one object of the invention being to provide an improved case of this kind which is made of a single piece of material; another object being to provide an improved case embodying ventilating ducts in the bottom and which serve to resiliently support the liller and t-o absorb shocks; another` object being to effect improvements in the construction of the finer. A
Vith the above and other objects in View the invention consists 'in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
l In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of an egg case constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention, showing the same partly open.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. .3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Fig. 4 is a plan of the case, unfolded.
My improved egg case 1 is made from a single rectangular piece of material, such as cardboard or the like and comprises a bottom 1, sides 2, 3, ends 4 and a cover 5 having sides 6, 7 and ends 8. The sides 2, 3 are folded from the bottom on the lines 9 and are separated at their ends from the ends 4 by cuts 10. Tabs 11 are folded from the sides on the lines 12 and are formed with tongues 13, which when the.V casin is arranged for use are inserted downwar ly in slits 14 with which the ends are provided, the tabs beingy .arranged on the outer sides of the ends as shown.
The flange 6 of the cover is integral with the side 3 and is folded therefrom on the line 15 and doubled by a strip 16 which is pasted on the outer side thereof and is formed with end tabs 17 which are pasted on ,the outer sides of the end flanges 8, the saidI flange 6 being also folded from the cover on the line 18. The flange 7 is folded from the cover on the line 19 and is provided with end tabs 20 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
seran No. 170,265.
which are pasted on the outer sides of the flanges S, said flange 7 being also formed with headed tongues 21 which are inserted in slits 22 in the sid-'es 2 to fasten the cover in place. y
The top and bottom of the ca'se are each stamped with a 'longitudinal ridge 23 and with cross ridges 24 which are suitably spaced apart. These ridges are resilient and those of the bottom serve to yieldably sup port the contents of the case above the bottom and to absorb shocks, and the ridges of the cover also serve to absorb shocks, as will be understood.
A filler 27 which has cells 28 for the recepi tion of the eggs is placed in the case together with top and bottom boards 29, 30 which are preferably also made of paper or cardboard but which may be made of any suitable material, and are provided with side and end flanges as shown. Said side and end flanges of the top and bottom boards respectively bear against the cover and bottom of the case so that said boards also serve as'shock absorbing elements to protect the contents of the filler.
The ller comprises an intermediate longitudinal bar 30, sides 31, intermediate cross bars 32 and ends 33. The members ofthe filler are also preferably made of cardboard. The intermediate bar 30 and intermediate cross bars 32 are doubled longitudinally so that each of said bars is provided with spaced walls. Said bars 30, 32 are arranged in reversed relation and are provided each with a pair of spacedslots to receive the walls of the other and are also provided near their ends with slots to receive correspondingly slotted portions of the outer members 31, 33. Said outer members 31, 33 havefcorrespondingly slotted interengagin portions, near their ends, as shown so that t e various members of the filler are detachably connected together. By the provision of the longitudinally doubled intermediate longitudinal shocks and to protect the eggs or other artiy cles in the cells. l
My improved egg case may be readily manufactured at slight cost, when unfolded occupies very little space so that the case when unfolded and emptied may be cheaply transported and the case may be also readily durable', and serves to eiectually protect the eggs or other articles shipped therein.
l/Vhile I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, l would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts Without departin from the spirit of my invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, 'I claim An egg case formed from a single piece of material and comprising a bottom, sides and ends, a cover having side and endtlanges, the cover forming an integral part of one ofthe side walls of the case, and being longitudinally doubled, the doubled portion being formed with end tabs secured to the outer side of the end flanges of the cover, the ends of the case having slit-s, said side members of the case being terminally formed with tabs adapted to enter seid slits, the bottom and cover each having a .longitudinal A-rib and transversely extending ribs, a filler including a bottom and a top Wall, the top Wall having upwardly extended side and end flanges, the bottom Wall having depending corresponding flanges, and said flanges bearing against th cover and bottom of the ease beyond said r1 s.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature.
JSEPH M. WHITE.
