WASHBOILER-RACK.
Specification of Letters Patent. P t t d 9, 1919',
Application filed. December 3, 1917, Serial No. 205,093; Renewed August 19, 1919. Serial No. 318,593.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. SOHLEKAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVhitedeer, in the county of Corson and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and Improved lVa'shboiler-Rack, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scri tion.
y invention relates to a means to be placed in a wash boiler on top of the clothes therein to hold the latter securely pressed down during the boiling operation.
. .More particularly the invention relates to a-rack for the indicated purpose adjustable to suit boilers of different sizes.
The prime object of the invention is to provide a rack formed of separate frame sections so connected as to provide for facility .of adjustment for varying-the effective length of the rack and whereby also the one frame section will have a hinge connection with the other to permit of varying their angular relation for positioning the rack in the boiler or removing it.
More specific objects of the invention are to provide handle means on the one rack section for varying its relation to the other section in positioning and removing the rack; to provide efficient clamp means to hold the sections in a given adjustment; and to simplify the means for connecting the sections whereby the sliding and relative swinging movements are embodied in unitary fixtures of simple construction.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a rack embodying my invention, the outline of the wash boiler being indicated in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1, a portion of the boiler being indicated in dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2, a portion of the boiler being indicated in full lines, the rack being shown with the sections angularly disposed for positioning or re moving the rack;
Fig. 1 is a transverse vertical section on the line 14, Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention in practice in accordance with the illustrated example,
a frame section 10 is provided to present side bars, acurved end bar 11 to conform to one end of the boiler, and a transverse bar 12 at the opposite end of the frame section, as well as longitudinal rack bars 13. A
companion section 14 similarly presents side I bars, a curved end 15 to conform to that end of the boiler opposite the end 11, and a cross bar 16 at the opposite end of the frame section from the curved end 15,. as well as longitudinal rack bars, certain of which are designated by the numeral 17.
. The central longitudinal bar 18 of the frame" 1 1 is preferably made stronger than the bar 17, as are also the side bars of the frame andthe ends 15, 16. The central bar 18 is continued in the form of an extension 18 beyond the cross bar 16 toward the curved end 11 of the frame section10-, and said extension 18 of the bar 18 is return bent or otherwise suitably formed to pro vide a handleterminal l9. Adjacent to the handle 19 the extension 18 and the corresponding longitudinal bar 13 are adapted to for latched engagement, for which purpose one of the same is provided with a catch. In the illustrated example a spring catch is provided on the extension 18 and adapted to be sprung into engagement with the bar 13 directly beneath, whereby to hold the frame sections in parallel relation as in Fig. 2.
Fittings 21 are provided to establish connection between the frame sections 10 and 14- in a manner to permit of a longitudinal adjustment of the sections or a relative swinging of the sections. Each fitting 21 is in the form of a web on one end of which is a sleeve 22 embracing the adjacent side bar of the frame 14 sulficiently loose to permit the bar to slide in the sleeve. The other end of each fitting 21 is formed with a sleeve 24: at right angles to the sleeve 22 or approximately so and embracing the cross bar 12 of frame 10 in a manner to permit the sleeve 24 to swing on the bar 12 or vice versa, there being one of said fittings 21 adjacent to each end of the bar 12. To hold the sleeve 22 and the frame 14 in given adjustment each sleeve 22 is provided with a set screw 23 or th like.
With the described arrangement, to vary slidable movement relatively to the other section through the medium of the sleeve connection 22 whereas the sleeves 2d permit the length of the rack, one section is given a relative swinging movement of the rack sections. In positioning the rack after adj ustment to suit a particular boiler, the same is placed upon the top of the clothes with the frame sections in angular position as indicated in Fig. 3 and the upper section swung downwardly to bring the sections to the position of Fig. 2 which will jam the ends 11, against the ends of the boiler and at the same time engage the catch in the fastened position. As the catch holds by friction a pull on the handle 19 will serve to unfasten the sections.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A rack of the class described including two frame sections, and means establishing a slidable and hinged connection between the sections.
2. A rack of the class described including separate frame sections, and. means slidably connected with one of said sections between the ends thereof and hingedly connected with the other section adjacent to an end of the latter.
3. A rack of the class described including two frame sections each including side bars and end bars, said sections overlapping, fittings adjacent to the end bar of one section, at the ends thereof, each of said fittings com prising sleeves at right angles to each other,
one sleeve of each fitting embracing the said end bar and the other sleeve of the fitting embracing the adjacent side bar of the other section; together with means to lock the last mentioned sleeves to the side bars embraced thereby.
4. A rack of the class described including overlapped frame sections slidably and hingedly connected with each other, an extension member on one of said sections and extending beyond the latter over the other section, a handle on said extension, and means to latch said extension to the other frame section.
