This invention relates to improvements in railway crossing -gates and has particular application to a train controlled crossing ate. v g In carrying'out'the present invention, it is our purpose to provide a crossing gate which will operate automatically to closed position when a train approaches within a predetermined distance of the crossing and vwhich will automatically open after the train has passed the crossing therebyopening the road, intersecting the crossing, to trafiic.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an automatic crossing gate which may be automatically illuminated when in lowered position, so that the same will be visible at night, and which may be restored to normal position when the crossing -is occupied by a train for a relatively long period 'of time, thereby preventing Waste of current.
` With the above recited objects in view and sists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims. In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the casing of one of the gates.

Thelines of rails of the tracks have the portions within the zone of the crossing insulated from the remaining portions of said rails, as shown at 15 in'F ig. 3 andthe cnr-- responding terminals of the magnets are connected withthe opposite poles pf a battery 16, while the remaining terminals are connected across the lines otrails ofthe respective tracks at the entrances to the insulated sections of the tracks by conductors 17. Thus when a train approaches thecross ing upon either track, the wheels and axles will bridge the insulated track section, thereby energizing both magnets to lower the barriers and hold the lsame lowered as long as the train is passing through the insulated section, the magnets being denergized when the train has lett the'insulated section, thereany by permitting the counter weights to restore the gates to normal position.

Thus the current flows through the magnets l() controlling theoperation of the two gates and the gates are lowered. The two rails of this track are insulatedfby the insulators 15, so that as soon as a train passes beyond the second pair of insulators 15, the circuit is interrupted and thereupon the magnets 10 will be denergized and the gates will be automatically raised.
Similarly, should a train be approaching the gates from an opposite direction from that'described concerning the iirst train as indicated by the arrows to the right, the two rcoils will again be operated to lower the gates. Current will flow from one side of the battery 16 through one coil 10 and by way of wire 25 to one rail of the second track and the two rails oi" this track being connected by the wheels and axle oi' the passing train current will flow from the second rail ci this track by way of wire '22, and thence through the second coil 10 back to the opposite side of the battery 16 by Way'of wire 26. Thus it matters not in which direction the train may be moving, the two gates will be operated so as to be lowered or raised.
In Fig. l a battery 28 is shown and one of the terminals 5. connected to the lamp 12 is connected to the battery; the other terminal beingsecured to the lamp 12 and to the switch le' on the'arinature 9; the contact late 1a is carried by the magnet 10 (see Fig. 1) and Athe wire 15 connects this plate with the opposite side of battery 28. Hence when the switch 14 contacts the plate 14 the local circuit 13-is closed and the lamp 12 will Hash. Should a train run from an opvposite direction from that described concern- Laatse? lease the barriers, as when a train is to occupy the crossing for a long period of time.

In a device as described in combination, a pair of parallel tracks each having an insulated section, a wire leading from the end of the section of one track and connecting to the opposite end of the section on the other track, a second wire leadim;- from the same end of the section of the first-named track to the other end of the section in the other track, two gate operating electromagnetic coils one Wired to connect the .first wire to one side of the generator and the other coil wired to connect the second wire to the other side of the generator.
