ANTIBATTLER FOR SASHES.
Specification of Letters I'atent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application filed June12, 1919. Serial No. 303,"?13.v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN D. CAMPBELL and WILLIAM H. Hoae, both residing at [Sea Bright, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, both citizens of the United States, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antirattlers for Sashes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains .to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvementsin an anti-rattler for sashes and more particularly to a device for use in preventing the rattling of window sashes.
It is very annoying every time the sash of a window is opened or partially opened, and in a great many instances when the sashes are closed, to have the sashes rattle and the object of our invention is to entirely eliminate all rattling or noise of the window sashes and particularly when they are open or partially open.
It further has for its object to provide eflicient means for the purpose described whichis capable of being attached to the sashes of a window without disfiguring or marring the same-and without interfering with the free movement of the sashes.
It further has for its object to provide means for attachment to the sashes designed to take the place of wedges and other devices usually used for the purpose.
It still further has for its object to provide a device for the purpose described, which is exceedingly simple, inexpensive, durable and compact in construction and easy and effective in use.
The invention consists in the several features and in the construction, combination, and arrangement of features as more fully hereinafter described and more specifically claimed.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical inside view of a window frame or casing and sashes with our.
invention applied to the sashes.
Fig. 2 is a detail top plan view of portions of upper and lower sashes and anti-rattler. Fig. 3 is a detail cross sectional view of the top portion of a sash with anti-rattler in place thereon.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the anti-rattling devices.
In the drawings in which similar reference characters denote similar parts throughout the several views, 1 represents a window casing'or frame, 2 and 3 upper and lower sashes, respectively, mounted in the casing or frame, all of well known construction and design.
Our invention comprises a pair of levers 1 made preferably of tempered spring steel, but which may be made of any other suitable material, and adapted to be secured or mounted on the top rail 5 of the lower sash 3 one at the right hand and the other at the left hand.
Each of the levers-st consists of a central portion 6 having downwardly and laterally curved spring edges or lugs 7 the flat portions .Sof which are mounted on the top rail 5 of the lower sash 3, a hole 10 being formed through the central portion 6 and a screw 11 passes through the hole 10 and serves to pivot the lever to the top ail 5 of the lower sash and the pressure of the head of the screw on the central portion 6 and the spring edges or lugs 7 causes a degree of spring pressure or tension between the head of the screw and the top rail 5 of the lower sash sufficientto hold or retain the lever in place when adjusted to the desired position, but at the same time allowing the lever to be moved or adjusted by hand.
The front portion '12 of the lever is twisted spirally and has its bottom edge curved upward as at 13, and then extends vertically and laterally as at 14 forming a curved or rounded spring clamping lug 15 designed to engage and be clamped against the side rail of the upper sash with sufficient pressure to hold both of the sashes tight and eliminate entirely the rattling of the sashes.
The rear portion 16 of the lever is twisted spirally upward as at 17, and forms a vertical finger piece 18 adapted to be grasped by the fingers in manipulating the lever.
The levers are each made of a single piece of spring metal and stamped or otherwise formed or bent into the desired shape. When the levers are not in the position assumed when clamping or looking the sashes the sashes will be able to move freely without interference.
In use when it is desired to apply our invention the levers are placed on the top rail of the sash, one at the right hand and the other at the left hand, and pivotally secured by means of a screw, the finger pieces grasped by the fingers, the levers turned un til the spring rounded portions engage and clamp against the side rails of the upper sashes which will cause both sashes to be held so tightly that all rattling will be eliminated.
We do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the specific details'of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement, in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use, without departing from the spirit and scope or our invention and improvements. We therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifi cations as properly fall within the scope of our invention and the terms of the following claims.
What we claim is 1. In a device of the character described, a lever provided with a spring lug adapted to engage a sash and resilient means for the attachment of said lever to a sash.
2. In a device of the character described, a lever, means for resiliently securing said lever to a sash and a spring lug for engaging a sash.
3. In a device of the character described, a lever provided with a spring lug, a finger piece and resilient means for engaging a sash.
4. In a device of the character described, a lever made of a single piece of spring material, having a lug for engaging a sash,
means for pivotally attaching said lever to a sash and means on the lever for engaging the sash on which it is pivoted.
5. In a device of the character described, a lever spirally twisted at one end and provided with a spring lug to engage a sash and spirally twisted at the other end and provided with a fin er piece to aii'ord means for grasping the fever to manipulate the same.
6. In a device of the character described,
a lever having a middle portion provided with depending spring edges designed to engage a sash, means for pivoting said lever to a sash, a spring lug on one end of said lever to engage a sash and a finger piece on the other end of said lever to afford means for grasping the same.
7. In a device of the character described, a lever, means for resiliently mounting said lever on a sash, a spring lug at one end of said lever adapted to engage a sash, a finger piece at the other end of said lever to afiord the means for grasping the lever to manipulate the same.
8. In a device of the character described, a lever provided with an arched spring middle portion the edges of which are adapted to engage a sash, a curved spring lug adapted to engage a sash and means for pivotally mounting said lever on a sash.
In testimony whereof we have aifixed our signatures.
