WHISTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY G. BALTHASAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of M1s souri, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in WVhistles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a whistle for motorvehicles, and belongs to what is known as the compression-type of whistle, being operated from the compression in one of the cylinders in the engine, instead of from the exhaust.
Its especial advantages are cheapness in manufacture, facility in cleaning, ease in operation, and reliability.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which like numbers of reference denote like parts wherever they occur,
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the same attached to a cylinder-head, in the place of an ordinary priming-cup such priming cup being removed for that purpose;

Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
By the threaded nipple 7 this device, as a whole, is attached to the cylinder-head 2. For the sake of convenience, this may be by removing one of the priming cups, but, if desired, may be through a separate hole.
The operating cord 3 leads to the drivers seat, and may, if desired, be attached to the steering post (not shown) or at any other suitable point. At its other end, the said cord is fastened in the hole 4 in the bellcrank 5, pivoted at 6 to lugs 7, projecting from the valve-casing 8.
The gas passes out of the cylinder through passage 9 into chamber 10, the wall of which on one side is provided with valve-seat 11 opposite hole 12 normally closed by the hexagon nut 13.
Valve 1 1 seats upon valve-seat 11 and controls the exit of gas from chamber 10.
Valve 14: is kept normally closed by spring 15 or any other suitable spring, and is opened by the pressure of nose 16 of hellcrank 5 when the said bell-crank 5 is rocked on pivot 6 by a pull upon the cord 3.
When valve lthas thus been opened, the gas rushes through opening 17 into chamber 18 and thence through the restricted port l9 and past the throat 20 of the whistle. Throat 20 is formed in a hollow casting 21, which, for the sake of easier casting, is formed with the opening 22. Opening 22 is closed by a cap 23 by upsetting the edge screw-threading of the said parts may be reversed or other means of union of the two parts provided. 1

hereby reserve the benefit of all changes in' form, arrangement, order, or use of parts, as it is evident that many minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of this invention or the scope of the following claim.
I claim:
A whistle comprising a casing having an interior partition to divide the easing into two chambers, means for connecting the casing to the cylinder of an explosive engine, so that one of said chambers is freely opened to the impulses from the cylinder, said chamber having a clean-out opening closed by a cap, a valve operating in a partition to control communication between said chambers, a valve stem projecting be yond the casing, means mounted on the casing to engage the stem for opening the valve, a spring arranged beyond the chambers of the casing for-closing the valve, and a whistle body removably connected to the casing.
