To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrrr MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salisbury, in the county of W'icomico and State of Maryland, have invented a new and,

useful Ironing-Board, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ironing boards and more particularly to portable self supporting devices of this character.

An object of this invention is to provide an ironing board that may be readily attached at a convenient point on the side wall of a room or other support, and having its components so arranged that they co operate to lock and secure the board in its supported position.

Another object of this invention is to pro vide an ironing board of generally improved construction, whereby the device will be simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction, as well as convenient, practical and serviceable in its use.

lVith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiments in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1. is a side elevation of the ironing board in its supported position, part appearing in section.

Referring to the drawings the side wall of a room, or other convenient support, is diagrammatically indicated at S, and the floor at F. The invention includes a board or table member 10, which conforms to the configuration of the usual ironing board and has an elongated slot 11 formed in one end thereof, and the end wall 12 of the slot is obliouely disposed with respect to the board member 10. An L-shaped or angular cleat 13 is secured to the side wall S by screws or other securing devices 14. In order to support the board 10 there is provided a supporting leg 15 which has a laterally enlarged portion 16 formed intermediate its ends, and a crotch orrecess l7formed'in this enlarged portion'ldthereby defining an upstanding ear or fulcrum member 18 having a shoulder 19 formed at that edge which is adjacent therecess 17. The upper terminal of the supporting leg 15 has an L-shaped notch 20 formed in that edge of the supporting leg 15 which is remote from the enlarged portion 16, and the lower terminal of thesupporting leg 15 has an angular floor engaging face or portion 21. A locking cleat 22 is secured to the lower face of the board member 10 and is received in the crotch or recess 17 with one edge engaging the shoulder 19, this cleat extends transversely across the board and serves as a reinforcing means for the board as well as a locking dev1ce.

In use, the upper end of the supporting leg 15 is positioned in the slot 11 and then the upper face of the board member 10 is moved to engagement with the lower face of the horizontal portion of the supporting cleat 13. Now that end of the ironing board that is remote from the cleat 13 is lowered, thereby positioning the locking cleat 22 withr in the crotch 17 and causing the upper face of the supporting ear or fulcrum member 18 to engage the lower face of the board 10.

In this position the notch 20 engages the upper and endfaces of the horizontal portion of the supporting cleat 13 thereby locking the entire device to this cleat, and since the fulcrum member 18 engages the board member 10 adjacent one end thereof, theweight of the remaining portion of this board exerts a downward pressure against the fulcrum member 19 thereby increasing the gripping action between the board 10 and the supporting leg 15 commensurate with the weight applied to the end of the board which is remote from the cleat 13. The board may be readily removed from its supported position by slightly raising the end of the board which is remote from the cleat 13, thereby releasing the cleat 13, after which the supporting leg 15 is removed from the slot 11 and the components of this 7 device may be compactly stored away.

Having thus described my invention what is claimed is:

An ironing board including a supporting cleat adapted to be secured to a suitable support, a board member having a longitudinally disposed slot formed in one end thereof, a locking cleat secured to the lower face of the board member, a supporting leg adapted to extend through the said slot and having a notch formed at one end thereof, and adapted to engage the supporting cleat, an enlarged portion formed intermediate the terminals of the supporting leg, said enlarged portion having a crotch formed therein for the reception of the locking cleat, a fulcrum member extending from the enlarged portion and having its upper terminal dis posed in parallel relation to the board member and adapted to engage the board member at a point intermediate the locking cleat and the free end of the board member, a shoulder forn ed on that edge of the fulcrum member Which is adjacent the crotch, said shoulder being perpendicularly disposed With respect to the upper terminal of the fulcrum memmy own, I have hereto aiiiXed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
