FRANK B. EILERS. OF FORT WAYNE. INDIANA, ASSII IGNOR TO WAYNE OIL TANK & YUM? COMPANY. OF FORT WAYNE. INDIANA. A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
DISCHARGE AND DRIP-DAN GUARD FOR PUMPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application filed March 22. 1919. Serial No. 284.457.
To all whom it may emu-earn Be it known that I, FRANK B. EILERS, a citizen of the Tnited States, residing at Fort lvayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Imrovements in Discharge and Drip-Pan iuards for Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
I My inrention relates to pumps mounted on tanks and the like; and particularly to means for so guarding the same. that unauthorized persons can not draw liquid from the tank through the drip pan opening, nor through the discharge nozzle of the pump while locked as when temporarily not in service.
Such tank and pump outfits are used by grocers, garage keepers, (lruggists and others in places where meddlesome persons often are near such outfits, and many who would not steal the contents, by drawing out the'liquids waste them and increase the fire hazard of the premises, or drop things into the tank. It is therefore important to be able to guard the pump and tank from all unauthorized persons. 7
My invention is a discharge and drip pan guard for such pumps, is inexpensive to make and simpleand easy to operate.
It will be apparent that the object of my invention is not to lock the pump but to seal the opening of the discharge nozzle of the pum by means of a drip tube made. part of t e drip pan cover and locked over the on of the discharge nozzle. lVhfen in such locked position any liquid pumped flows directly back into the tank throng the drip tube and drip pan.
My, invention'is illustrated in the accompanying drawinys in which Fig. 1, 'a iron elevation shows the top of a tank with a pump mounted thereon, and a drip pan with the guard in unlocked position.
Fig. 2, is the same with the guard in locked position.
Fig. 3, is a top plan view of the drip pan with cover and guard in locked position at without the discharge nozzle shown.
Fig. 4, is an elevation of the same in locked position with part of the drip pan cover section, and
Fi;,. 5, a detail, shows the guard in unlocked position like Fig. 1, but taken from a. quarter turn to the left. I
Referring now to the drawings; the tank (i has the usual openings (not shown) for the pump A and drip pan B secured thereto by screws. The. discharge nozzle (1 of the pump A is over the center of the drip pan B in fixed position The drip pan B is provided with a cover B pivoted thereto at b. A hooked lug b on the drip pan B is adapted to engage a lug b on the drip pan cover B when the cover is swung into its central position \Vhith is the locking position, and holds the cover down snugly against the drip-pan.
The cover B is bored axially to receive a drip pipe C made of lesser diameter at 0 below the shoulder r. The cover 13 has a lug b with a hole I) therein and next this lug an inverted L shaped slot If is formed in the cover B Into the part 0 of the drip tube C, is fixed a stud 0" provided with aneye 0 adapted to register with the hole I) when the device is in locked position; that is when the cover is centered on the drip pan anddrip pipe C is raised so that the nozzle (1, projects into the top of the drip pipe G. Then the stud rests on the shoulder formed by the horizontal part of the slot 6. When the cover is to be swun back to pumping the drip pipe C is rotate slightly lmd the stud c dro s into the vertical portion of the slot b a lowing the drip pipe C to fall to the shoulder c and clear of the nozzle a. As long as the stud is locked to the lug 15 by the-padlock D or in any other convenient manner the drip pi can not be rotated, and both nozzle an drip pan are protected for the contact of the fixed nozzle and the drip pipe revent the cover B being swung back ofi' t e drip pan B.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States j 1. In pump and tank outfits unitary means capable of being swung on a pivot 'to cover the drip pan, and vertically adjusted to cover the end of the pump discharge nozzle, so that liquid pumped through the nozzle when said means are so adjusted will flow:I back through the drip pan into the tan 2. In mechanism of the character indirated, a. tank having a drip pan, a pump having its nozzle fixed above said drip pan, a cover which in one, position centers over and covers the drip pan and in the other uncovers it, a drip ipe sliciably mounted upon the cover and capable of vertical movement with relation thereto, said drip pipe of such length and size as to extend over the end of the nozzle in raised position.
3. In mechanism of the character indiouted, atank having a drip pun, a pump having its nozzle fixed above said drip pen, a cover which in one position centers over and covers the drip pan and in the other uncovers it, a drip pipe slidably mounted upon the cover and capable of vertical movement with relation thereto, said drip pipe of such length and size as to extend over the end of the nozzle in raised position, and means for 15 securing the cover and drip pipe in fixed relation to the drip pan and faucet when in raised position. i
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing 20 witnesses.
FRANK B. EILERS. W itnesses LAWRENCE BARROB, N. WEMPOFE.
