APPARATUS FOR TREATMENT OF PAPER-PULP AND OTHER FIBBOUS MATERIALS.
Application filed February 16, 1918.
ratus for beating or bruising paper pulp and 7 other fibrous materials and has for its objects, inter alia, to economize power, to increase the efficiency of operation and to improve the resultant product.
The improved apparatus comprises, in lieu of the usual beating cylinder or drum and cooperating plate, a pair of closely adjacent peripherally fluted or grooved rollers which are rotated at difierent speeds in opposite directions and between which the material is passed and thereby beaten.
The rollers are preferably adjustable toward andaway from each other to meet requirements.
The flutings or grooves are preferably slightly skew to the axes, which latter are horizontal and lie in the same horizontal plane in parallel relationship.
Any suitable means may be provided for imparting oppositely directed rotary movements to the rollers.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 a plan and 3 a vertical section of apparatus embodying the invention in conjunction with separating apparatus or brush such as disclosed in the specification of the co-pending application No. 217,693, filed February 16, 1918. Fig.

tion of the rollers. Fig. 5 shows diagrammatically the improved apparatus as constituting an adjunct to an existing beating englne.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Serial No. 217,694.
The same reference letters indicate similar parts in the several views.
As shown, the improved apparatus comprises a pair of fluted rollers 1, 2 revoluble at difierent speeds in opposite directions within a closed vessel 3 having an inlet 4 on top and an outlet 5 at the bottom.
The flutings are slightly skew to the axes of the rollers which lie in the same horizontal plane in parallel relationship.
The rollers 1, 2 are mounted so as to be adjustable toward and from each other to meet requirements, and receive oppositely directed rotary movements at different speeds through the intermediary of gearing.
WVhat we claim is 1. Apparatus for beating paper pulp and other fibrous material in the wet state, comprising a pair of closely adjacentperipherally fluted beating rollers the axes of which are in the same horizontal plane, and between which rollers the material is permitted to flow downwardly, the flutings of said rollers being oppositely skewed, and means for rotating vsaid rollers; at different speeds in opposite directions.
2. Apparatus for beating paper pulp and other fibrous material in the wet state, com
prising a pair of closely adjacent periph-- erally fluted rollers the axes of which are in the same horizontal plane, and between which rollers the material 1S permitted to flow downwardly, said rollers adjustable lat-.
erally toward and away from one another, the flutings of said rollers being oppositely skewed, and means for rotating said rollers at different speeds in opposite directions.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
