THOMAS'LUCIEN TALIAFERRO, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
METAL CONTAINER FOR SHOE-POLISH AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, i919.
Applicationfi-led September 6, 1919. Serial No. 322,042.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. TALIA- FERRO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Metal Containers for Shoe-Polish and the like, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
- The invention relates to new and useful improvements in metal containers, and more particularly to a container having a body portion with a slip cover frictionally engaging the same in which shoe polish or the like is stored.
An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above character with a cover having the lower edge portion thereof bent outwardly and thence inwardly to strengthen the lower edge-and to form a shoulder which causes the cover 'to be quickly released from the bodyportionof the container when rapped lightly at any point alon said strengthened lower edge.
In the rawings, which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the inven- Figure 1 is a side 'view of a box. or container embodying my improvements;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, but showing on an exaggerated scale the shaping of the cover, when struck a light blow at the F ig. 3 is a vertical sectional view throu h one side of the box with the parts as in a- Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but with the parts as positioned in Fig. 2.
In carryinglout the'invention, I have prepared a container having a body portion of the usual construction, said body portion having a vertical side wall, the upper edge of which is turned inwardly to facilitate the placing of the cover on the box and the removal of the same, and said body portion is also provided with a rib extending parallel with the top edge of the body portion for limiting the downward movement of the cover onto said body portion." Said cover embodies the new features of my invention, and these features consist in bending outwardly the loweredge of the cover to form ashoulder,
and thence bending said edge inwardly to strengthen the same.
This strengthenededge extends outwardly beyond the rib on the body portion so that it may 'be readily struck a light blow at an point, and the str king of this edge with llght blows at any polnt quickly releases the cover from the container.
Referring'more in detail to the drawings,-
1 have shown my improved container or box for storing shoe polish or the like as conslstlng of a body portion 1 having a vertical side wall 2 turned slightly in at the upper edge, as indicated at 3. Intermediate the upper and lower ends of the side wall there is an annular rib 4 which projects outwardly. Said rib is parallel with the top edge of the body portion of the container and serves as a limiting stop for the cover which is a slipon cover friotionally engaging the outerwall of said body portion.
The cover is indicated at 5. Said cover has a downwardly projecting flange or vertical wall 6 which is bent outwardly, as at 7,
to form a shoulder 8. Said outwardly bent portion is also bent inwardly agaimas at. 9, thus forming a strengthened edge with the shoulder 8 Just at the inner part of said strengthened edge; -The external diameter of the extreme lower edge of-the cover is sl ghtly greater. than the external diameter of the body portion at the rib 4. Said strengthened edge may be'rapped by any suitable instrument at any point along the I same. A light blow on the cover at such point causes the upper part o'f the vertical wall of the body portion to spring inwardlyv slightly, as indicated in Fig. 40f the drawings. The shoulder 8, through this spring: ing of the body portion, creeps up on said vertical wall and as the light blows are continued, s'a-id shoulder will continue to creep up the wall until the shoulder is finally released. s
Another effect which is accomplished by striking this lower strengthened edge of.
the cover is the slight distorting of the cover, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, along the line of the lower edge. The
point a, wherethe blow is struck, approaches the point I) diametrically opposite the point a and as these points approach see other, thepoints c at opposite sides of,the cover and at ninety degrees or there bout from the points a and b will be raise upwardly,
the lower edgeof the cover taking a curved line shape. This upwar movement at the points jc tends torelease thec'over at the sides The turni ig in of the edgeand strengthening of the same increases this buckling effect which releases the cover at the points 0-0. This buckling of the cover, together with the creeping of the shoulder 8 upwardly on the vertical wall of the body portion, quickly releases the cover although it may be very firmly seated on said body portion.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the shaping of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention which consists primarily in the outwardly bent lower edge infolded to strengthen the same, which edge extends diametrically outwardly beyond the extreme outer parts of the body portion so that said strengthening edge may be struck light blows for the purposeof causing the cover to creep up on the body portion and be released therefrom.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A metal container comprising a body portion having a vertical wall and a slip I cover frictionally engaging the outer face of said vertical wall, said cover having its lower portion bent outwardly away from said wall and strengthened whereby the edge may be struck light blows for releasing the cover from the body portion of the container.
'2. A metal container comprising a body portion having a vertical wall and a slip cover frictionally engaging the outer face of said vertical wall, said cover having its lower portion bent outwardly away from said wall and strengthened by folding said vertical wall of the body portion having a rib formed therein parallel with the upper edge of said body portion for limiting the clownward movement of the cover, said outwardly bent portion of the cover extending beyond the extreme outer edge of said rib whereby said strengthened edge of the cover may be struck light blows for releasing the cover from the body portion.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
THOMAS LUCIEN TAIJAFERRO.
