Description

R. ALLEN.
CABPENTER'S PLANE.
APPLICATION nuan IULY w. 1919.
1,324,486; Patented Dec. 9,1919.
RALPH ALLEN, or snntron, oonnnorioor, essr'onoa rornn aoivrnroor. & MACHINE 00., or DERBY, connnorxoor, A. ooaronerlo v.
oanrnnrnns PLANE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelton, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carpenters Planes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical, central section, of a carpenters plane constructed inaccordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 a plan view thereof with a portion of the cutter-clamp broken away.
Fig. 3 a detached reverse plan view of the cutter-clamp.
Fig. 4: a detached view in side elevation of the cutter-clamp lever.
My invention relates to an improvement in carpenters planes, and more particularly to the means employed for clamping their cutters in place, the object being to provide a simple, reliable and convenient device for the purpose specified.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a carpenters plane having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I form a cam-like, transversely arranged pivot-bearing 2 of eccentric crosssection upon the upturned rear end?) of the web 4 of a one-piece cutter-clamp which also comprises a hood-like handle 5 located at its rear end, a gripping-plate 6 located at its forward end and parallel side flanges 7 which connect the said handle and plate. As shown, the cam-like pivot-bearing 2 is located between two corresponding shoulders 8 made integralwith it and with the rear edge of the web 4.
Upon the pivot-bearing 2 I mount a onepiece hook-shaped cutter-clamp lever comprising a forwardly extending finger-piece 9, a mounting-loop or bow 10, and a depending, forwardly bent pressure-foot 11, the said mounting-loop inclosing a cam-surface 12 which co-acts with the pivot-bearing 2 aforesaid. As shown the lever is strengthened by an integral rib 13.
Specification of hettersflatent.
ing the clamp. On account. of its hooklilze form and its protected location within the hood-like handle of the clamp, the lever will not in any ordinary use of the plane become dislodged.
Otherwise than as described, the plane is of standard construction. A screw 14 passing downward-through the key-slot 15 in the web 4: into the body 16 of the plane holds the clamp in place upon the body,
which is formed with supports 17 and 18 for the cutter 19, which is longitudinally adjusted in theusual manner by a screw 20. At its forward end, the plane is provided with an adjustable mouth-piece 21 locked in place by a nut 22.
Patented Bed-9, 1919. Application filed. Ju1y10,1919. serial No. 309,796.
When the finger-piece of the lever is" forced downward into the position in which foot 11 presses down upon the upper sur-,
face of the cutter 19 with enough force to spring the cutter-clamp sufficiently to cause its gripping-plate 6 to grip the cutter by its forward end and rigidly hold it in place, this springing of the clamp being effected by the cam-like pivot-bearing 2 in conjunction with theca-m-surface 12 of the lever. By lifting the finger-piece '9 of the clamplever into the position in which it is shown by broken lines in Fig. 1, the pressure uponv the cutter is released and the same may then be adjusted as required.
I claim 1. In a carpenters plane, the combination with the body and cutter thereof, of a onepiece cutter-clamp having a transversely arranged bearing of eccentric cross-section; and a hook-shaped cutter-clamp lever mounted upon the said bearing and adapted when rocked thereupon to press down upon the cutter and spring the clamp for holding the cutter in place.
2. In a carpenters plane, the combination with the body and cutter thereof, of a onepiece cutter-clamp comprising a handle located at its rear end, a web, a grippingplate at the forward end of the said web, anda transversely arranged bearing formed upon the rear edge of the said Web and cocentric in cross-section; and a hook-shaped cutter-clamp lever comprising a forwardly extending finger-piece, a mounting-bend or loop interiorly shaped to form acam, and
a pressureioot, the said lever being mounted upon the said bearing and operating When rocked thereupon to press down upon the cutter and so spring the clamp and cause the same to grip the cutter at the forward 10 end thereof.
In testimony whereof, I have'signed this specification in the presence of two sub-
