REVERSIBLE naronn'r-sroox FOR. PIPE-THREADING.
I Specification of Letters l atent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application mea-mn 'is, 1917. Serial No.'18 1,17. 1
To all whom may concern: r.
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. BECK, a
" citizen of the -United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Ratchet- Stocks for Pipe-Threading, of which the following, taken in connectionwith the drawings,
is a description.
Iy invention' relates to improvements in reversible pipe threading stocks andhasffor its object the provisionin a device of this character of means wherebythe reversible mechanism ofthe stock can be utilized as the operator desires. V f
A further object'ofthe invention is to produce stock of this class whereby the die holding member may be locked'in fixed position and may be quickly and easily released, as necessary. p: In the accompanying drawings I-have illustrated what I now consider the pre ferred form of my invention, although I wish to be understood as contemplating such variations thereof as come Within the scope of theclaims, and in these drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a reversible pipe threading stock embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal line 22 of Fig. l;
.Fig. 3 is a transverse section, taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. 1 I
The preferred formof my construction comprises an ordinary reversible pipethreading stock, consisting of -a body, 4, and a collar, 5, rotatably mounted thereon.
section, taken on On the body, 4, are the circumferential.
shoulders, 6, 7, 8, upon which are mounted the collars, 5, 9. The collar, 9, is positively secured to the body, 4, by means of the set the-body. of thestock, and firmly locked'in position by the member, 4*.
After the desired number-of threads have been'cut upon the pipe, in order toremove the stock, it is necessary to reverse the pawl so that'thestock can be turnedin the opposite direction. Thisis'necessary to overcome the frictional engagement between'the die and the pipe. 7
The principal object of my invention is theprovision of meanswhereby thecollar 5' may be positively and releasably locked ,to the-body of thestock while the device is in operation." This I accomplish by pro viding in theretaining' member one ormore openings,;1 l, in each of which is slidably arranged a bolt, 15. Thebody, 4, is provided with a pluralityof sockets, 16, so posi tioned that atjsome point 'd-uring therotation of'the-collar, 5, each of said openings, 14, will be in'registration with a socket, 16:
While the collar, 5, and retaining member,
4, are in this position, the bolts'orlocking members, 15, canbe forced'downwardly into the sockets, 16, as clearly, shown in Fig. 2.
Each of said locking members is provided a with a head,17, which terminates the downward .movement of said member by posi= tively engaging the collar, 5, as shown.
The periphery of each of said heads, 17, is
knurled'to permit of expeditious handling by the operator. a a
Extending at right angles to the locking members, 15, through the wall of the collar} 5, are openings, 19, shown" more clearly in.
members, 15, is a circumferential shoulder,
v2O, which cooperates with means contained in each ofthe passages, 19, to terminate the upward movement of said locking members,
Fig. 3. 1 Within each of the openings, 14, is arranged mechanism for regulating the when the locking members, l5,*are in the locking position, or at the downward 'terminal of their movement. The pins, 21 ,are disposed in the openings, 19, and are held in. frictional engagement with said members by thecompression springs, 28, which are main tained in positive, engagement with said pins by the set screws 24.] vWhen it is desired to release the collar, 5, from positive engagement with the body,4, the locking members, i
V 95 Y On the periphery of each of the locking 2 15, are raised until further movement is precluded by positive engagement of the pins, 21, and the shoulders, 20, as shown in Fig. 3. The locking members are held in this raised position by frictional engagement with the pins, 21.
I claim:
1. The combination with a reversible pipe threading stock consisting of a body having exterior and interior circumferential shoulders formed thereon, a collar seating on said shoulders and radially mounted on said body, and means for positively and releasably locking said collar while the device is in operation.
2. The combination with a reversible pipe threading stock having shoulders formed thereon, a revoluble collar seating on said shoulders, locking members movable in passageways provided in said collar and extending into sockets in the stock registering with the aforesaid passages, means for ter-. minating the movement of I said looking members in one direction, and means for releasing said locking mechanism substantially as described.
3. In a reversible pipe threading stock, the combination of a body having radially disposed teeth formed therein, a collar movable circumferentially of said body, corresponding abutting shoulders on said body andcollar, a pawl arranged in operative relation with the aforesaid teeth, locking members extending through passageways 1n said collar and into sockets in the stock, and spring controlled mechanism for releasing said locking members.
' 4. The combination with a reversible pipe-threading stock, a collar mounted on said stock," of a plurality of locking members slidably mounted in passages in said collar, each of said locking members having a head and a circumferent al shoulder on the periphery, the aforesaid collar having passages Corresponding with said first mentioned passages, and means, in said last men tioned passages for terminating the movement of said locking members in one direction, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a reversible pipe-threading stock, a collar mounted thereon, of a plurality of locking members slidably mounted in passages in said collar, each of said locking members having a head at its upper extremity and a circumferential shoulder on its periphery, pins arranged in operative relation with said locking members, springs bearing against said pins, and means for maintaining the springs in engagement with said pins, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
EDWARD E. BECK.
