Description

A. H MID'GLEY.
IGNITION SYSTEM FOR INTERNAL COMBUSHON Emsmis APPLKCATION FlLED APR. 1. [9!9. 1,324,430.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
INVENTUR flJL/Wid l BY 5 Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application filed April 1, 1919. Serial No. 286,655.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT HENRY MIDG- Lnr, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at lVarple Way, Acton Vale, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Ignition Systems for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specificution.
This invention relates to an improved ig-- nitioi. system for internal combustion engines and more particularly to the electrical connections between the ignition apparatus and dynamo on the one hand, and the switchboard and battery on the other hand, the invention being more especially intended or use in ignition arrangements of the character described in British s )ecifications Nos. 9282 and 9740 of 1918, although not limited thereto.
earthing and preferably, through a resistance in rate of change of current through the primary of the induction coil to such an extent as to prevent the induction in the secondary being suiliciently high to produce sparking.
nother feature of the invention in the use of a two-way switch for efl'ectin the short-circuit hereinbefore referred to, of either the one or the other of two contactbreakers associated with two ignition sets respectively in order to put either the one or the other out of action.
A further feature of the invention cony means of a two-way switch, in to be able to utilize either the one or the other battery.
, f cylinders,
' order to be able to utilize Referring to the accompanying drawing which illustrates the invention diagrammatically and by way of example, a, a? are two distributors associated with two banks he primary and second coil, and d, c the cam and earthed mak and break of the circuit breaker associated with one bank of cylinders, and I o the primary and secondary coil of the ignition coil, and d 6 the cam and earthed make and break of the circuit breaker associated with the other bank of cylinders.
l) l) two points of connections of the two circuit breakers, I'GSPQCHVQLY. which are connected to the stationary contacts of a switch S through which the one or the other circuit breaker is short-circuited by or the other set ofignition out of action, by reducing the rate of change of current through the primary of the respective induction coil to such an extent as to prevent the induction in the secondary being sufficiently high to produce sparking. An additional resistance r, r is preferably inserted between the )oints of connection D 1) of the circuit reakers and the primary 6 b of the respective induction coils.
f is the dynamo which supplies the necessary current for the ignition coils, and whie is provided with three brushes, the two brushes of I g are earth ed, while its other brush 9 is connected to the ignition system by i he ynamo,
matic cut-out I0 is of a two-way switch m, in
either the one or the other battery. is an ammetcr inserted 103 in the latter circuit.
ach of the ignitioncoils is preferably provided with a trembler n, M, respectively,
gained! together at the point 0 connection controlled by the clos ng of an 110 densers associated with the respective trembiers of the ignition coils.
The ignition set or sets and the dynamo form a compact unit of construction which is connected to the batteries, one of which is capable of being used as an emergemry battery, and to the various switches and instrulnent-s on the switch-board by means of a limited number of connections, the latter being such that even if they are completely destroyed, the ignition set or sets are still ca'- pable of being operated straight from the dynamo.
What I claim is 1. An ignition systel'n for internal conibustion engines, comprising a source of current, an ignition coil having a primary and a secondary winding, 0, contiict'breeker and means for sholt-circuitin'g the contactbreaker, said means comprising a switch and a resistance in series therewith, as set forth.
2. An ignition system for internal rombustion engines, comprising a source of current, two ignition coils having primary and secondary windings, two contact breakers connected with the respective primary windings of the ignition rolls and means capable of slmrt-circuiting the (mo or the other eont'act-brealu-r, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
