TOOL.
Application filed iune 19, 1919. Serial N0.- 305,306.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. ROBIhISQN, a citizen of the United States, and reslding at'Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Tools, of
This invention relates to tools and particularly to what, are known as squares, miter squares, rulers and the like,'and the object of this invention is to provide an article of the class specified which is simple in construction and efiicient-in operation, and which may be used in connection'with an ordinary extension ruler and detached therefrom whenever desired; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan View of the free end portions of an extension ruler showing my improvement mounted thereon;
Fig. 2 a view similar toFig. 1 but showing the attachment in sections;
Fig. 3 a section on the line 33 of Fig.
1; and,
Fig. 4: a partial section on the line H of Fig. 2.
In the drawing I have shown at 5 an ordinary two-foot extension ruler, the free end portions 6 of which are joined to the pivoted portions 7 at 8 by a suitable hinge construction, and the faces of said ruler are provided with suitable scales 9, one of'which is shown in the drawing.
The above described ruler may be of the usual or any preferred construction and forms no part of this invention, and while an extension ruler is shown, it will be understood that a straight or single bladed ruler of the general form of that shown in the drawing may be employed.
In practice, I provide a triangular block 10 composed of a V-shaped back member 11 and to the free ends 12 of which is connected a transverse cross head 13. The V-shaped Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented back member 11..is provided approximately centrally thereof with an elongated aperture 14C, and the cross head 13 is provided with a similar elongated aperture 15 through which the ruler 5 orthe separate parts thereof are adapted to pass. I I
Dec. 9, 1919.
In making the separate parts of the block- 1 10 of wood, they are preferably secured to-- gether at. 16 by gluing, but if the separate parts of the device are madeiofmetal, they .may be 'securedtogether -by welding, rivetmg or by screws orbolts as. will be readily understood.- It will be noted that the side I 17 of the block 10 projects from one edge of the ruler 5 ata greater-distancethan the I opposite side thereof, and said side '17 is provided withanaperture 18 which opens.
outwardly through the V-shaped member 11 and the cross head 13, and the adjacent faces of said V-shaped member and cross head are provided inwardly of the aperture 18 with corresponding rectangular recesses 19' and 20 respectively, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, which communicate with the aperture 18 through an aperture 21.
In practice, in securing the separate parts 11 and 13 together, a square or angular nut 22is placed in the recesses 19 and 20 with a screw 23 secured therein, said screw being provided with a milled head 24 which operates in the aperture 18, and by means of which aperture the screw may be manipu- The block 10 is adjustably mounted on the ruler 5 and secured in any desired position of adjustment by means .of the screw 23. It will be apparent that the cross head 13 of the block 10 will serve as a square in con junction with the ruler 5 and in the use of the device the cross head 13 may be held in either of two vertical positions as well as either of two horizontal positions when using it as a square. The V-shaped back member 11 or the side portions thereof form a miter square, the use of which will be the same as that of the square formed by the cross head 13. T The block 10 or the cross head 13 thereof may also cooperate with the ruler 5 for the purpose of using the device as a depth gage, the depth measurement being determined between one end portion of the ruler and the face of the cross head 13.
While I have shown 'a specific means of forming the separate parts of the block 10 and for mounting a set screw'or other device therein, my invention is not necessarily limited to these details, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.-
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with an extension ruler, of a triangular block, said block being composed of a V-shaped portion and a cross head secured thereto, said V-shaped portion and cross head being provided with elongated apertures adapted to receive said ruler, one side portion of the separate parts of the block being apertured and provided inwardly thereof with recessed portions, a nut mounted in the recessed portions of said parts, and a headed set screw adjustably mounted in said nut with the head thereof in said apertured portion and the inner end of said set screw being adapted to operate in connection with'one side edge portion of said ruler to lock said block in connection therewith.
2. The combination with a ruler, of a triangular block, said block being composed of a V-shaped portion and a cross head secured thereto, said V-shaped portion and cross head being provided with elongated apertures through which the ruler is adapted to pass, one side portionof the separate parts of the block being apertured, a member mounted in the apertured portion of the block, and a headed set screw adjustably mounted in said member with the head thereof in the apertured portion and the inner end of said set screw being adapted to operate in connection with one side edge portion of said ruler to lock said block in connection therewith.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 14 day of June, 1919.
