, ROBERT LEWIS JEWETT, OF GULFPORT, MISSISSIPPI.
EMBROIDERY-NEEDLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT LEWIS Jnwnr'r, a citizen or the United States, residing at Gultport, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Embroidery- Needles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to embroidery needles, particularly to those adapted for use in making imitation French knots, and v has for its object the provision of a needle which is so constructed that it may be quickly and easily threaded without the necessity for the employment of a small wire or the like such as is employed at present in needles of this character for effecting the threading thereof.
:An important and more specific object is tw the provision of a needle of this character in whichthe needle-proper is provided with a longitudinally extending slot which gradually decreases in size toward the point of n the needle but which is yet of sufficient size as to permit the thread, such as embroidery silk and the like, to be passed therethrough,
upon longitudinal movement of the thread,
into the bore of the needle.
Another object is the provision of a needle of this character which includes a handle having provided thereon intermediate the ends thereof, a guide loop for the passage of the thread or silk and which is provided at its end with an offset portion from which the needle proper extends, this offset portion being provided with a central hole registering with the bore of the needle and having communicating therewith a laterally extending passage having a flaring entrance opening for initial engagement therein of the thread or silk.
An additional object is the provision of a needle of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly eiiicient and durable in use, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction tobe hereinafter 51} more fully described and claimed, and illus- Specificationof Letters Patent.

trated in the accompanying drawing, in which 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of my me dle in use, held in the hand of an operator and showing it threaded,
Fig; 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through the lower portion of the needle, 7
Fig. 3 is a front elevation, taken at right angles to Fig. 2,
Fig. 4: is a cross sectional view through the handle, looking down onto the offset por- .tion from which the needle proper extends,
and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view through a pieceot fabric showing the stitch made by the needle.
Referring more particularly to the drawmg, I have shown my device as comprising a handle 10 which is preferably cylindrical in form and which is provided intermediate its ends with a guide loop or'ring 11. At its lower end, the handle 10 has secured thereon or formed integrally thereon, as preferred, a laterally offset member 12, which alines with the guide ring 11 and which is provided with a central hole 13 and a pas sage 14 communicating with this hole, the passage being very small and provided with a flaring entrance opening 15.
Preferably formed upon the lower side of theotfset member 12 is a needle proper 16 which is provided with a bore 17 registering with and really formed as a continuation of the hole 13 in the offset member 12. At its lower end, the needle proper 16 is diagonally cut away, as shown, to provide a penetrating point 18. 4
' At one side, the needle proper 16 is provided with a substantially longitudinally extending slot 19 extending into the bore 17 and this slot registers at its upper end with the passage 14 in the offset member 12. At its lower end, the slot 19 decreases in width, for a purpose to be described.
In the use of the needle, in order to effect the threading thereof, it is necessary that the thread or embroidery silk A be inserted through the guideloop or ring 11, drawn inserted laterally through the flaring entrance opening 15 into the passage 141- and engaged within thehole 13 in the ofi'set member 12. The operator then grasps the end of the thread or silk and pulls it longitudinally toward the point of the needle 16, pressing it lightly toward the bore of the needle, whereupon the thread will enter and pass through the slot 19' and into the bore 17 of the needle. In .view of the fact that the lower end of the slot 19 is much constricted it will be apparent that return through the slot 19 of the thread will be prevented after the thread is once engaged within the bore 17.
After the needle is threaded, as above described, it is used by inserting the point 18 through a piece of fabric B the desired dis tance, withdrmving. the needle from the fabric, and consequently forming a loop C, then reinserting the needle through the {a ric, agai; withdrawing it, and so on, to provide mul iplicity of the loops C, as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 5 of the drawing. In this manner it will be seen that any desired design may be worked out on suitable fabric in such a way that the design will be raised above the back ground, the different loops creating the appearance of French knots, which will be highly artistic and effective in appearance.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing, it will be apparent that l have thus provided an embroidery needle which may be readily used for the formation of imitation French knots and which is so constructed that it may be quickly and easily threaded without any necessity for the employment ofa threading wire or other auxiliary implement.
While I have shown and described the referred embodiment of my invention, it 18 or" course to be understood that I reserve messes the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. An embroidery needle comprising a handle, a laterally offset member provided at the lower end of said handle, said member having formed therein a central hole and a laterally extending passage. .com-
municating therewith and provided with a flaring entrance opening, a needle proper formed on the lower end of said ofi'set member in parallel relation to said handle, said needle proper having a pointed end and a bore formed as a continuation of the hole in said offset member and also having a substantially longitudinally extendin slot registering with the passage in said 0 set memher, said slot decreasing in width from said.
offset member toward the point of the therewith, and aneedle extending from. said member and provided with longitudinal openings communicating with said hole and passage.
