HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-8,1919.

HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. a; rare.
Application filed August 8, 1919, Serial No. 316,155.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY 'MooRn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented a new and useful Hinge, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
proceeds,
This invention relates to hinges, one of its objects being to provide a plurality of friction surfaces whereby the movement of the hinge leaves will be retarded.
Another object is to provide a hinge which is simple and durable in construction and is not obj ectio'nably bulky.
With the foregoing and other objects-in view which will appear as .the description the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
Inthe accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the hinge.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3, Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 44, Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of one of the leaves of the hinge.
Fig. 6 is an elevation of the other leaf of the hinge.
Fig. 7 is a perspective View of one of the friction washers.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a hinge, leaf provided with a side extension 2 which is inclined relative thereto and is provided at opposed edges with ears 3 and 4. These .ears project beyond the extension and one of them has a thickned portion, as shown at 5. A threaded opening 6 is formed in the ear 4 and an additional opening 7 which is not threaded, is formed in the other ear 3. The other leaf 8 of the hinge has a side extension 9 inclined relative thereto and located at the opposite free edges of this extension and extending thereboyond are cars 10 and 11. Openings 12 are formed in these cars and said ears are adapted to project between and in contact with the ears 3 and 4 with the openings 12 in alinement with the openings 6 and 7.
Interposed between the ears l0 and 11 are friction washers 13 each having a central opening 14. Each washer has an edge concentric withthe circle and merging into the edges of an angular portion or extension 15 and a lug 16 projects from one edge of each extension as shown.
The washers are adapted to be assembled in twoseries, the washers of each series being arranged oppositely to the washers of the other series. Furthermore the washers of the two series alternate. When the washers are assembled between the ears 10 and 11 their openings 14 aline with the openings 6, 7 and 12 and receive a bolt or pintle 17 the head 18 of which engages a washer 19 while the other end of the bolt screws into the openin 6. When the washers are thus located t e lugs 16 of the two series engage the edges of the extensions 2 and 9 respectively between the ears on said extensions and one straight edge of each washer engages the flat face of one of the side extensions. Thus it will be seen that the washers occupy the space formed between the two inclined side extensions 2 and 9 and when the two leaves are moved relative to each other about the bolt or pintle 17 the washers will be moved one upon the other and the friction thus produced will tend to retard such movement and to hold the leaves against free movement. The lug and fiat face of each washer insures the washer moving in both directions with the leaf engaged thereby. By tightening the bolt the frictional engagement between the ears and washers can be increased as desired.
What is claimed is A hinge including opposed leaves, a side extension upon each leaf and inclined relative thereto, ears upon the extensions, a bolt connecting the ears and adjustably engaging one of them, friction Washers upon the In testimony that I claim the foregoing as bolt and having angular extensions, the my own I have hereto affixed my signature Washers being oppositely disposed succesin the presence of two Witnesses.
sively, the angular extension of each Washer HARRY MOORE. engaging one of the inclined extensions, and Witnesses: a lug on each Washer for engaging the edge LELAND M. CRAWFORD,
of the engaged extension. JOHN H. JOHNSON.
